Hosting My Videos

I’ve decided to host my own videos now in my Gallery: Videos

The reasoning for this… well, let me just show you my usage for last month:

Bandwidth Usage:
Total Provided: 1314 GB ($1/GB over)
Total Used So Far: 5.432 GB

Disk Usage:
Total Provided: 26640.000 MB ($0.10 / MB over)
3 Day Avg: 1851.572 MB

So last month, I used less than 1% of the provided bandwidth and I’m currently using ~7% of my alloted disk space. So I thought, instead of getting my account locked on YouTube again or having videos on PutFile get deleted after 6 months of inactivity, I thought I’d just host my own videos given I have so much unused space and bandwidth.

Gallery does support videos (movies) which is nice, so I began transferring my movies onto Gallery. However, I hit 2 problems:

  1. Thumbnails weren’t being created for my .wmv files
  2. Gallery wouldn’t recognize .mov as movie files (GalleryMovieItem)

I was actually okay with the thumbnails not being generated as I know most of my videos were encoded with WMV9 and it is a ‘proprietary’ codec, but what was funny was that .mov files were recognized as application/quicktime and as a movie before I uploaded, but after I uploaded, it was placed into the GalleryUnknownItem category. This was really mind boggling as I started to trace through the Gallery code and went through my database trying to find the problem. The ability to downlaod the movie was still there (there was a “Download unknown” link), but I wanted the video to play on screen.

I ended up giving up and posted on the Gallery forums asking for help, as it seems there’s also been other people that hit this same problem. So at this point, I started looking up info on FFMPEG as that’s what Gallery uses to generate thumbnails. Apparently there’s already support for WMV9, but required to get the latest nightly builds. What I found interesting about FFMPEG was there was no download for it. There download/files page on SourceForge had 0 files. The only way to get it was to download the source code from MPlayer and compile it on my own, which I ended up doing.

I replaced FFMPEG and regenerated all my thumbnails and my videos now have icons. Yay!

Then I thought, maybe Gallery was marking .mov files as Unknown because it FFMPEG said it wasn’t a movie file. So I tried reuploading a .mov file and BAM, it worked! So both my problems were solved just by updating FFMPEG.

A gallery of unusual Chinese robots (from /.) – Chinese engineers have unveiled a series of robots these days — without releasing lots of technical details about them. In the past two months, I’ve gathered pictures of robots which can act as waiters in restaurants in Hong Kong or pull rickshaws near Beijing. I’ve also found a four-finger robotic hand able to play organ, a female robot greeting tourists visiting the Sichuan Science Museum with ‘ni hao’ (‘How are you?’ in Mandarin — if my sources are correct), and even a robotic chimpanzee. They’ve rebranded Kaspersky Lab’s AV software and is giving it away for free. Kaspersky Lab is rated as one of the best AV software. If you think Norton or Symantec is good, you haven’t tried Kasperksy Lab or Computer Associates.

FaxZero

Found this pretty neat service: faxZero (from B$). From their main page:

Maximum 2 faxes per day

It’s nice to be able to find a free online fax “sending” service. There’s a bunch of free fax receiving services like:

eFax

K7 is located in seattle and you can get a 206 number. eFax gives out random #s and if you pay, you can choose a local number. I don’t believe K7 has a limit, but eFax limits you to receiving 20 pages of fax a month. If you go over, your account gets cancelled.

As a big fan of Pablo Francisco, I found this video Pablo Francisco: little tortilla boy amv to be hilarious. It’s a remaking of his Little Tortilla Boy skit with scenes from GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) and NGE (Neon Genesis Evangelion). If you haven’t seen him before, you should watch his Comedy Central Stand Up Fix.

My Boss My Hero

So I started watching this new J-Drama (Japanese soap opera) called My Boss My Hero (recommended to me by HKenshin). Simply said, this is about the 1st son of the boss of a Japanese mafia. He’s a good fighter, but has no brains. By no brains, I mean he can’t even count to 27. So his father says, if he wants to one day take over the mafia, he’ll have to graduate from high school, or else he’ll pass the position onto his second sond.

Not wanting to lose the boss position, he decides to try high school (even though he’s already 27 years old). He slowly adapts and funny things just happen.

I did make a few clips of my own:

My Boss My Hero – Fractions
This is when Maki tries to teach one of his subordinates fractions. I thought the animation was hilarious.

My Boss My Hero – Heart Pain
This animation was cut and merged together. Maki has never been in love before and this is him experiencing his first love. It’s so sweet yet so painful. The more in love he gets, the bigger the little guy grows.

Some clips I found off YouTube:

My Boss ☆ My Hero
This is a clip I believe from episode 1 where Maki just started school and has no clue what’s going on. When the biology teacher looks around to choose a student to answer a question, Maki doesn’t want him to pick him, so he makes this scary face which scares the heck out of the teacher. The same thing happens with his math teacher, but his math teacher misinterprets the face as he really wants to answer it and picks on him. I guess that face is only something alpha-males would understand.

My Boss My Hero4-5
A clip from episode 4, during the Festival of Fright (or something like that), where classmates are paired off with each other (one male and one female) and go through this scary forest where the teacher dresses up as ghosts. It’s more like a test of bravery and Maki who isn’t afraid of anything, is afraid of the little guy pounding on his heart, as this is his first love. As the teacher warned him, love is scarier than the devil itself. And when the girl grabs his hand, his heart pounding goes through the roof and the only way he can think of combating it is by destroying everything along the path.

布丁爭奪戰1 (Pudding Battle 1)
This is a clip I believe from episode 1 where Maki begins to go to school and his favorite food is pudding. He finds out that his school cafeteria sells this awesome pudding, but only has 12 each day and when you have 500 students all wanting that pudding, you get a pudding battle.

So the raws I’ve been getting are rather huge. Each episode is between 600megs to 1GB. The resolution is pretty nice though at 704×396. Apparently, there’s a even higher resolution you can find on D-Addicts: 1280×720, but those file sizes are about 1.5GB to 2GB. As HKenshin says: you don’t need 1280 for jdrama when there are no hotties. There are a few cuties though. 🙂

I’ve also been downloading the Chinese subtitles from G.P.S. by downloading the torrent and just disabling all the other files besides the SSA file. They currently have up to episode 6. English subtitles are also available, but have been a bit slow. They’re currently up to episode 3 and can be found here: My Boss My Hero [Eng Subs].

Bookshelves

Wow, how long has it been since my last post…

I’ve just been swamped with work recently and have been too tired to make any post. It was this or spending what little time I had left watching movies and anime. I’ve started watching a new J-Drama that HKenshin introduced me to called My Boss My Hero which I’ll speak of in a later post. It’s super hilarious.

Anyway, last weekend I received my bookshelves from OfficeMax and built them. I actually spent a week looking for the right size. Even drove all the way down to IKEA and came back empty handed. I have this space in the middle of my stairs that is 60″ wide and 11.5″ deep. The previous owner had 2 bookcases there which fitted pretty nicely, so I decided to get 2 bookshelves that were ~30″ wide. IKEA had tons of selection, but was either barely over or left too much space. According to my notebook:

At this point, I only saw the KILBY and BILLY, so I was trying to come up with a combination of bookshelves which would add up to around 60″ but really ended up with nowhere. I did see the MAGIKER too and was thinking of 4x MAGIKER, but unfortunately, the depth of that bookshelf was 15 3/7″. I went and ask the sales guy for help and he suggested using 3 PAX instead of trying to come up with mismatch sets which I agree might look ugly.

I went over to the PAX and it was pretty awesome at first, until I saw the depth: 13 3/4″
The same went with the remaining bookshelves of having 13-15″ depths.

I was pretty disappointed, though I did see a few breakfast tables that I was interested in, but who knew that breakfast tables were so expensive.

NYGARD

SALMI

So back to my bookshelves, so after I came home, I started browsing the 3 big office supplies stores: Office Depot, Staples, and OfficeMax. I’ve always been a big supporter of Office Depot and Staples, but neither of them really had what I wanted. When I was about to give up, I find this on OfficeMax: Atwood Bookcase (71-3/8″H x 11-5/8″D x 29-5/8″W) and I was like sweet! It was also on sale for $45 each, so I ordered 2 and used $20 off $100 coupon (after adding some fillers).

So time for the display:

The Departed

First of all, did you know they were making a sequel to the American version of The Grudge: The Grudge 2. It’s not like the 1st movie didn’t suck enough (compared to the original the Ju-on). Interesting enough is the fact that both the Japanese version and the American version are by the same director (Takashi Shimizu). I guess he thought if someone was going to leech off his movie and make big bucks off his idea, it should be him.

Any way, this posts was meant for another movie that’s copying an Asian film: The Departed. After rewatching the trailer, it’s a complete rip off of Infernal Affairs (無間道). I highly recommended this movie if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s actually a trilogy, but part 2 and 3 aren’t really worth watching. When this movie came out in Hong Kong, this was like the Matrix of HK film industry. Every movie that came after it was compared to this. They tried to bring this movie to the states, but the marketing was done pretty poorly and it didn’t really get popular. In fact, the DVD cover features a woman I don’t even remember being part of the movie. I guess it’s sole reason to have that chick there is to attract eyes.

Watching the trailer, there were some obvious things they reused:

  • The cast on the arm to listen onto the conversation
  • The police academy which both main characters attended
  • The conversation between the boss villain and the police leak in the movie theater
  • Several roof top scenes – including conversations between the mole and his supervisor (and also I’m guessing the final scene)

You can watch the trailer of Infernal Affairs trailer here.

The Lost City

I took a quick skim over this movie and found it somewhat interesting and decided to give it a shot. The overally storyline covers the time of the final days of Fulgencio Batista and the rise of Fidel Castro. This movie was actually more education (to me) than entertaining, though it is not unentertaining if I’ve led you to believe that.

Because of this movie, it peaked my interest in Cuba and I started reading up the Wikipedia entries of these individuals. Like all communist leaders that came into power, their ideal was just, but then power leads to corruption and this is what ended up happening. Did you know that Fidel Castro graduated from law school with a Doctor of Laws degree and began practicing law in a small partnership in Havana, mostly representing the poor and underprivileged. And the fact that Batista had actually captured Fidel Castro multiple times, but then releasing him.

Though I’m not sure how much truth is in the movie, but it seems that Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries were fighting for a free Cuba and a democratic government. How it ended up becoming a Communist Country was rather weird and unexplained. Batista fled the country on 1/1/1959 and Castro and his men took over. What was interesting was that they banned the saxophone as it was related to something bad which I cannot remember, but she made it sound like it was a tool from the devil.

Pauly Shore Is Dead

So I was rewatching An Evening with Kevin Smith and the following conversation happens:

Jen: Hi, my name is Jen Dudanowizz, and…
Kevin: Hello
Jen: Hi, and I was wondering…
Kevin: What was the first name?
Jen: Jen.
Kevin: Jen. What was the last name?
Jen: Dudanowizz.
Kevin: Spell.
Jen: D-U-D, I told my mother that I would marry a guy with a single syllable last name just to make the rest of my life simple.
Kevin: Just answer my question. Spell. Spell the name.
Jen: D-U-D.
Kevin: Yes.
Jen: A-N-O-W-I-Z-Z.
Kevin: That is $35,000 worth of education.
Jen: Yes, that is. 36.
Kevin: Is it really?
Jen: But my question is, will we be seeing Jay and Silent Bob in the movies again?
Kevin: Jay and Silent Bob will never fucking come back. Never. See. Don’t boo that. Jay and Bob will be in the cartoon movie. But like live action, no way. I mean, look at me. I’m getting older. And Mewes, like thank god the make-up, because Mewes looks like he’s 49, in real life. No, there just comes a time where you stop right? Cause you don’t want to overstay your welcome, you don’t want to be Pauly Shore.
Jen: It was quality while it lasted.
Kevin: And I only say that because Pauly S- like remember everyone at one point was like the weasel. Like hey buddy. And then one day people were like fuck Pauly Shore. I just don’t want to live through that part of history. Like the hey the buddy, the weasel, that was alright. But when they’re like Fuck You, Silent Bob… Silent Dick, cause what do you say to that? Alright… Silent Dick. So just get get out while the getting’s good. Leave the party before the party ends. Push back from the table before, you know, eat 19 desserts. Um, stop at like 17½. Cause there are some people who would argue we overstayed by about 4 movies. Um, and it just feels like time to go, plus after the last one, what do you do? Like Jay and Bob in Space. They were getting high in a rocket, one of them, you know. Someone said lunch, you thought he said launch.

So I’m like who the heck is Pauly Shore? What the heck is this weasel thingy? I look him up on Wikipedia and he turns out to be the MTV host from 1989-1994. Wikipedia basically shows what happened to this poor fellow. Reading more, I find out that he had done a mockumentary about himself: By that time, though, Shore had fully retreated to smaller movie roles, and a “weasel”-free stand-up routine. He attempted a comeback with the star-studded, autobiographical independent film Pauly Shore Is Dead: You’ll Never Wiez In This Town Again, which went to video on January 25, 2005, after a small theatrical run. The film garnered critical praise and was positively received by fans, quickly developing a cult following.

I decided to give it a shot to find out who Pauly Shore really is.

Scoop

This movie really deserves more credit than what the critics are giving it. It was not meant to be a serious film, but a light and funny and meant to make you laugh out loud. It’s been awhile since I’ve actually laughed out loud for a movie. CDMCC, Elizabeth, and I went out for dinner and movie. It was decided that we’d watch this when we saw the preview while we were watching Who Killed the Electric Car? Scoop is another movie directed by Woody Allen. His previous film Match Point was excellent. This movie did not have such a serious undertone and in fact was quite opposite of that.

Sword Material

So Tera and I were discussing about Japanese swords and we got into the topic of sword material. The only thing he knew was folded steel was the best and the crappy stuff they sell everywhere nowadays is made of stainless steel (which looks prettier, but is pretty impractical). Not knowing what my wakazashi (or wakizashi) is made of, I went over to Cold Steel and turns out it is made with 1050 High Carbon Steel. I have no idea what that is and neither does Tera.

According to Wikipedia, Carbon Steel is a metal alloy, a combination of two elements, iron and carbon, where other elements are present in quantities too small to affect the properties. Steel with a low carbon content has the same properties as iron, soft but easily formed. As carbon content rises the metal becomes harder and stronger but less ductile.

According to What’s the difference in Sword Materials?:

High Carbon Steel / High Carbon Spring Steel – Basically a plain carbon steel, it’s also known as “Spring Steel” or “Live Steel”. Commonly made of recycled 5160, 1065, 1050, CK55 or any low alloy or plain carbon steel. If the steel is not properly heat-treated when re-smelted it will retain memory of its previous shape and be more likely to break. Most issues of quality can be found originating in India, the Philippines or in Malaysia. These materials will require oiling to prevent rusting and it’s a good idea to keep swords out of scabbards to avoid damage from moisture and corrosion from the chemicals in the leather.

From Japanese Samurai Swords Buying Guide:

The next thing to consider when choosing a sword is the type of steel that the blade is made of. There are basically 3 types of steel, 420 J2 (Stainless steel), High Carbon, and Folded steel. If you are looking for a battle ready sword you’ll want to stay away from the 420 J2 Stainless. High carbon steel is very high quality steel however folded steel is the strongest. Actually it’s not that the folded steel is a different type of steel, but how the blade is forged.

A folded steel blade is typically made from high carbon steel. The difference is that a folded steel blade is just like it says the steel is folded over and over again until the smith believes that it is adequate.

Some people say that a good high carbon steel blade can be just as strong as a folded steel blade. The smiths for the Thaitsuki Nihonto Swords claim to have mastered a form of forging high carbon steel blades that is just as strong if not stronger than many of the folded steel blades.

From Cold Steel’s FAQ:

Q: Why is Carbon V® steel better than others?

Some Cold Steel knives are made from Carbon V®, a high carbon, low alloy cutlery grade steel. This steel is superior in performance to most other steels due to its chemistry and also because of the close controls that we maintain at every stage of the manufacturing process. These controls begin at the steel mill where Cold Steel specifies the desired microstructure of the steel. Once smelted, each steel shipment is microscopically checked for structural quality, cleanliness and chemical content by an independent metallurgist not in the mill’s employ. The blades are then blanked parallel to the rolling direction of the steel plate to optimize grain flow along the length of the blade. The final step is a precise heat treatment sequence that was developed by Cold Steel specifically for this custom steel. This heat treatment process is one of our most highly guarded trade secrets. It was arrived at over several years by using an exhaustive series of practical and metallurgical tests and observations. Overall, we believe that attention to detail in every phase of the manufacturing process is the primary reason for the superiority of our blades.

THIS JUST GOT A LOT MORE INTERESTING…

According to Wikipedia’s entry on steel:

Steel is a metal alloy whose major component is iron, with carbon being the primary alloying material. Carbon acts as a hardening agent, preventing iron atoms, which are naturally arranged in a crystal lattice, from sliding past one another (dislocation). Varying the amount of carbon and its distribution in the alloy controls qualities such as the hardness, elasticity, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Steel with increased carbon content can be made harder and stronger than iron, but is also more brittle. One classical definition is that steels are iron–carbon alloys with up to 2.1 percent carbon by weight; alloys with higher carbon content than this are known as cast iron. Steel is also to be distinguished from wrought iron with little or no carbon. It is common talk today to talk about ‘the iron and steel industry’ as if it were a single thing; it is today, but historically they were separate products.

In other words, what makes steel different from iron is the carbon. I never knew that! I thought steel was just refined iron.
