Unlocked Cell Phone

So when I got home a few days ago, I took out my cell phone to recharge it and it turns out I had forgotten to enable key lock. Actually, key lock was enabled, but did it somehow miracously. However, there was much already done underneath the key lock. The first page after I unlocked the keypad was: “Delete All? Yes/No” I was wo… How did I get to this page, and the Back button took me to my contacts list and etc. It turns out somehow I had pressed the correct sequence of keys where it was going to delete my entire contact list and the amazing thing is after that, it pressed the key sequence to lock the keypad instead of hitting yes. I’m just quite amazed at the probability of this happening.

So ungsunghero and I were chatting about the abacus yesterday and we came upon the question if multiplication was possible on it. I have heard it was, and so was division, but ungsunghero wasn’t quite sure. After a little bit of searching, I found this site: The Abacus Handbook. It turns out that both multiplication and division is possible! Multiplication is nothing more than a series of additions. However, it is not very convenient to do 23 separate adds on the number 47 just to give us the answer to 23×47 ! Therefore, there are specific techniques for performing multiplication on the abacus frame. I’ve learned two different methods and know there are probably others as well – but I will teach only the method that was approved by the Japan Abacus Committee. I have found that this method is least prone to errors and is very simple once you learn the basic technique. You will need to know your multiplication table up to 9×9=81 and you should be all set. For me at least, division was a little intimidating. As it turns out Dave was right when he said, “Trust me. It’s not that hard!” As with multiplication you will need to know your multiplication tables up to 9 x 9 = 81. It might be helpful to think of division as being nothing more than a series of subtractions The techniques I use below are pretty much as they are described in “The Japanese Abacus – It’s Use and Theory” by Takashi Kojima.

But the punishment prompted letters and calls to talk radio from people either praising the woman or blasting her for publicly humiliating her daughter. I personally praise both the mother and the child for doing this, but I can see why some are against the idea of public humiliation. I guess being from an Asian family, this would be consider little stuff.

(Yes, even more so than my Neo Geo arcade machine) And now after a couple years of tinkering it is complete! After building my very first portable,-the Atari 2600 VCSp, back in 2000 (ever notice how awkward of a year that is to say?) I had a couple of “dream projects” to follow it up with. One was a Nintendo portable, which strangely took 4 years to manifest itself. The other was something I consider impossible at the time – an Atari 800 computer laptop. My ultimate dream portable! Spoliers:

In the latest 2 episodes, a lot more has happened, well mostly in episode 11.

In episode 10, Van was hired to protect a bunch of dock workers from pirates (the pirate captain was quite feminine and nothing like a real pirate if I may add) while they try to lift up a rather large load that has been sitting in the ocean. Van agreed to help because they were going to provide him with train tickets to his destination along with money compensative. The pirates had weird techniques such as freezing the water and shooting out punches with homing devices. But in the end, Van beat the pulp outta their submarine and the dock workers were able to secure their item.

However, little did Van know, that item was being delivered to the man with claw group. At the train station of their destination, Wendy sees her brother Michael and was shocked to hear that Michael no longer wants to come home and is helping the guy with the claw hands. Wendy couldn’t believe her ears when Michael told her to return to Evergreen and never come looking for him. It was quite a sad little incident, but it lacked the emotional punch. Later on, when Wendy tells Van about this, Van gets extremely upset for not probing deeper for more info. Wendy was really sad and shocked and Joshua came to her aid. When Wendy asks Van what she should do, Van replies with, “Isn’t it obvious? You should go home.” And the episode ends with Wendy crying and walking away with her luggage. I actually felt really sad for her.

In the middle of the 2nd episode, they introduce the group of 7, which included Van for some reason. Seems like we’ll have to wait for the next episode to see what connection they have.

Gas Prices

Did you notice how much gas prices have gone down recently!?!?! Just a month ago, I was paying $2.86/gallon. Yesterday I went to Safeway, and the price was only $2.26/gallon! Are the gas companies artificially inflating the prices because of the natural disasters? Probably. But even at $5/gallon, people are still going to buy it because guess what, people depend on cars so much nowadays, it’s a luxury one cannot afford to give up. Would that make it a necessity then?

There was a thread going on at work where people were asking which brand of gas gave the best mileage, and if there really was any difference between brand name gas and “cheap” gas like Arco, Safeway, and Costco. If I had to guess, both Safeway and Costco buy excess gasoline off of big distributors, so they get it at a discounted press. So one day Costco maybe using Chevron gas while the following day, they may be using Shell gas. The only difference I have heard is that brand name gasolines put more detergent in their gasoline so it’s better for cleaning. Of course, this is all hypothetical and studies show that there isn’t much difference between branded gasoline and generic (if you can call it that) gasoline.

I’ve added a new column to my Gasoline Spreadsheet. I’ve been recording mileage, prices, and volume of gasoline ever since I moved up here to see how my car is performing mileage-wise. Recently it’s been dropping, especially the latest fill-up, I got less than 23MPG. However, that may be because that I haven’t been traveling much and going to work (3 miles) everyday isn’t really good for mileage especially when I have that hill to climb everyday. The new column I’ve added is: Brand. Hopefully, I can make a nice chart and graphs after I’ve accumulated enough data.

I’ve only heard this so I can not confirm if it’s true or not, but rumor says that when car manufacturers calculate their mileage, they use only Chevron gas and this is the same across the board. This is one of the many possible reasons why people prefer brand name gasoline, but once again, there’s no source I can confirm this with.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRABYAPLE

Just wanted to wish my buddy a Happy Birthday! I haven’t chat with him in a really really long time!

Speaking of chatting, did you noticed that AIM added 2 new buddies to your buddy list:
AIM Bots (2/2)
    MovieFone
    ShoppingBuddy

I played around with them for some time and it’s quite interesting. I didnt find ShoppingBuddy to be much use, but MoviePhone was pretty useful. You type in the movie you want to see followed by your Zip Code and it’ll tell you which movie theaters it’s playing at near you and the associated times. It also includes a link to the movie itself. They should’ve also provided a link to the theater so you can get directions and find out more info. Hopefully that’ll come later. You can also type in a date, and it’ll give you a list of movies that are playing near you. Not comprehensive but makes it easier if you don’t have any idea what you want to watch.

Too bad the interface has to go through an AIM chat window. What I do like about it is that the responses are amazingly fast. No need for all the pretty graphics to load.

/. had an article on it: AOL launches program for AIM bots.

Google Ads

As some of you may have noticed (for those that don’t already have AdBlock and is blocking Google Ads), I managed somehow to get Google to let me display ads again. Guess I won’t be trying to “test” the system this time. Besides the ads on the top, I’ve also added their search engine which isn’t as good as the one provided by WordPress, but sure is way faster. Google’s search has to wait till it’s done crawling and it doesn’t crawl too often nor too deep.

Then there’s the new referral system where people who download Firefox along with the Google Toolbar will automatically donate $1 to account. Guess Google’s trying to help spread Firefox and pressure Internet Explorer.

I’ve also moved around the links on the side bar, starting now with the Meta links (basically the adminsitrative stuff) followed by the Archives and Categories and then my own Personal Sites and then Friend’s links/blogs.

I’ve also added the ads/search bar to my Gallery. I’ve noticed I’ve had some kinks with the internal search engine that Gallery came with. Not too sure what’s causing it, but I haven’t had time to investigate.

Spoilers:

Both of these episodes were dedicated to showing people trying to steal the clones / information regarding how to clone females. Episode 4 was a bit sad. Faust’s saberdolls decided to return to Ganterland because they have been summoned back. But they fear they will not reach Faust’s expectations which is why they’re training in Japoness. They have become especially close with Otaru and his saberdolls, even though they were mortal enemies before. Lime was really sad to see them leave.

In the next episode, it was mostly flashback to SMJ. It was about a tour around Japoness and they were talking about the history of the shogun and how Otaru found the 3 saberdolls and the battles that went on. It even included the saddest part of the first season, the part where I actually cried. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD: It was the scene when Otaru and the 3 Marionettes were in space. They had tricked Otaru into an escape pod and shot him back to earth while they went on to deal with the spaceship themselves which was to trade their Maiden Circuits for the real female. It was a sad scene. Otaru was begging them not to do it and how he saw them as real people. Lime’s only response was, “Never forget about us, Otaru.” *sniff*

The episode then changes to where the tourists were actually imposters of people trying to steal information. However, they seem to have miscalculated the old man the left behind. The ending showed him stealing some information. The next epsiode will probably talk more about him.

Blood+ Episode 6

Blood+ Episode 6 – Father’s Hand

Spoilers:

It seems Saya hasn’t fully awaken yet, leaving them trapped. The research lab apparently has a bunch of these chiropterans running around. All of the researchers seemed to be killed already. Saya’s father shows up at the last minute and starts fighting. Apparently he’s been injected with a chemical called D67 – short for Delta 67. David explains that this was the chemical to change humans into chiropterans. He begs Saya to finish him off because he would like to die as her father and not as a chiropteran.

On the other end, the Americans have ordered the bombing of that lab, even though it’ll strain their relationship with the Japanese. However, the chance of releasing another Chiropteran into the public was a risk they could not take. The bombing was ordered to be deployed in 3hrs. However, the HQ wasn’t able to reach David and his group. Some jamming devices were running in that area. However, there was too much traffic to reach there in time to warn them. Kai then states he can get there on his motorcycle and rushes off.

How Kai managed to find the elevator and actually get it to go downstairs is quite questionable. I guess since the people below hit the elevator button, the elevator went down and by chance Kai happened to get in on time. He then witnesses his father slowly turning into a chiropteran and can’t bare to watch as Saya’s blood kills him. They some how manage to escape in time before the bombing.

For some reason, I have a feeling that the father isn’t dead yet, and will come back later, this time immune to Saya’s blood…

Spoilers:

This episode delves into the past of Sui Fong and Yoruichi. It turns out Yoruichi was some princess of some really high clan and Sui Fong was from a clan that has sworn to protect Yoruichi. Sui Fong was an excellent student and Yoruichi even chooses her as her own bodyguard. Things were going really well, until one day when Yoruichi suddenly left without saying goodbye. So she’s been holding that grudge for over 100 years swearing to excel herself and be better than Yoruichi one day for betraying her. Don’t want to tell you how the fight ended, you can watch that for yourself.

One of the questions I always had was people in Soul Society seem to stop growing after a certain point. I’ve had this discussion with Liam before but we couldn’t really come up with an answer. The perfect example was shown in this episode with Sui Fong and Yoruichi. Yoruichi has not grown much at all from the flashbacks, however, Sui Fong had grown from a little girl to teenager, to her 20s now, maybe? Between the teenager look and the 20s look, over 100 years has past. Why did Yoruichi stop growing? Do they just grow slower once they reach past a certain age or do they fully stop?

The camera then zooms back to Ichigo and Byakuya. Neither is wounded at this point, but everyone in the court of souls is feeling their battle. Ichigo demands Byakuka to release his Bankai, but Byakuka replies that he’s 1000 years too early to be killed by his Bankai. Sound familiar? It’s exactly the same speach he gave to Renji before Renji made him fall on his knees. Welp, the episode ended there, but we’re finally going to see Ichigo’s Bankai vs Byakuya’s Bankai in the next episode!!!

Spoilers:

In this episode, Train decides to leave Chronos and the elders and the other Numbers were disappointed in him, especially #1, who is the captain. Train even gives up his gun to that cute sweeper that he shares his milk with. However, Chronos couldn’t just end it like this and sends Creed to try to persuade him to come back. Who knew Creed was actually starting a coup d’état because he didn’t believe Chronos should have so much power and control over 50% of the world’s economy. Creed uses a sword instead of a gun like Train. In fact, so far outta the Chronos I’ve met, they’ve all used swords. Train was the only one I’ve seen that used a gun. His gun actually has a name: Hades. So #1 comes after both Creed and Train, and the episode ends with her about to attack.

Yahoo! Mail now has advance Firefox support!

I just noticed Yahoo! Mail is supporting advance edit controls in Firefox:

Before this, these advance controls were only available only in Internet Explorer, which really sucked because whenever I hit reply in Firefox, it’d create the following ugly reply patterns for the message:

Now it’s just a blue bar like Outlook and how it’s suppose to be. Other functionalities it has includes spell check, font face, font size, bold, italic, underline, color, highlight, emoticon, hyperlink, text alignment, list creationg, indentation, and stationeries. The only thing I really cared about was the ugly > > > >. So I’m happy.

Random Crap:

Google to offer web traffic analysis servicesGoogle has officially launched Analytics, a robust new web analysis system that provides site owners with traffic metrics and massive amounts of useful marketing data. Based on technology originally developed by a Californian company called Urchin that Google acquired in March, Analytics integrates with Google’s popular AdWords system, and will vastly improve the quality and quantity of data provided to existing AdWords users. Those of you that don’t use AdWords can still use Analytics by adding a simple javascript snippet to your web site. I just implemented this on both my blog and gallery. We’ll see how well it does. I was working on KLAWS if you remember correctly, but that project sorted is still somewhere in midair and I accumulated way too much data to process.

Berkeley High’s condom club – A student can get a 12-pack, free food (from esca):

Now after I read this — and after I stopped laughing — my first thought was not about the offer of “free food,” presumably made to induce the students to join club. My mind did not linger over the sticker that gets attached to the back of a student I.D. (wondering, like, what’s the logo look like for the Condom Club?) What stopped me, what left me pondering the ingenuity of high school administrators, was the number of condoms on offer. Please, read this line again, slowly: Show your ID at the Health Center and receive 12 free condoms a week.

Where did they come up with the number 12?

Twelve condoms a week! I don’t know sex workers who need that many condoms. Certainly none of my middle-age friends need 12 condoms a week. High school students do?
