Rebates

This past weekend, there’s been back and forth argument about rebates over at Consumerist.

I understand that Consumerist is pro-consumers, but when they make blanket statements like, “All together now: rebates are scams.” I feel very irked because that is so far from the truth. I don’t deny that rebates can be fishy and many people have had their rebate rejected, but to make a statement like all rebates are scams just is bad consumer knowledge. I guess my expectations of Consumerist is to educate consumers of the rights and powers and help when big companies and corporations try to bully us, but to mislead consumers I think is very anti-consumers.

So there are very common arguments made that rebates are scams. The most common one being rebates get rejected or denied and the horror stories people talk about when trying to get their rebate. I personally know many people who would not touch rebates anymore because they’ve been denied or rejected one too many times. However, I do have to say, getting a rebate is not as easy as what most people think there is.

First there is the fine print. Be sure to read over the fine print carefully, just like you would on a contract or application. If you think $10 isn’t worth your time to go over the fine print, then don’t bother even doing the rebate as you probably would miss something along the line. Most rebates get rejected because people who file these rebates forgot to include a certain item, the purchase date is outside the valid period, or silly things like forgetting to include your phone number. YES, SOMETIMES REBATE FORMS EXPLICITLY SAY THAT YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER, although I believe there has been a recently law that says phone numbers are no longer required, though I may be incorrect.

Things I always pay attention to when filing a rebate:

  • The dates when the rebate is valid
  • The postmark date required
  • Stores that the rebate is valid at
  • Limit per name/address/household
  • Items to include (i.e. receipt, rebate form, UPC)
  • Which items can be copies of (i.e. receipts) and which needs to be the original (i.e. UPC)
  • How long it should take the rebate to arrive (typically 4-12 weeks)
  • Contact information in the event I don’t receive my rebate within the time frame. Usually they’ll include a toll-free number and sometimes a website. Most rebate center websites also provides a way to communicate through e-mail.

Then there’s the rebate center itself. Just like banks, rebate centers also have reputations. If ABC bank offered you a ridiculous interest rate on your deposits or money you borrow from them, you don’t exactly sign the paper immediately without researching more about the bank. Or you wouldn’t fill out all your information on a credit card application just because you were mailed an application. You want to know more about the bank and credit card companies before you actually sign anything over or provide any information. Actually I need to restate that. Many people are actually dumb enough to just sign away their life like that, but MOST smart people research beforehand. I mean can you believe Payday Loans stores are actually thriving?

Another thing you must be sure to do is document everything and make photocopies of everything. I personally scan all my rebates and receipts into my computer, since I don’t like to deal with paper copies, but you should do what you prefer.

Anyway, lets say you do research the rebate company, find them reputable, and fill out the forms and mail it in. Your work’s not done. You still have to keep track, just like you would keep track purchases you made online. When you failed to receive a package, you don’t go screaming that online purchases are all scams. You contact the company and try to figure out what went wrong. Generally you can look up your rebate status online. If you rebate status doesn’t appear online after 6 weeks, it’s time to give the rebate center a call. Sometimes things can get lost in the mail or since these rebates are entered manually by hand, it’s common for things to be entered incorrectly into the system. A simple call can usually can straighten things out and if needed, they’ll ask you to email, fax, or resend the documentation. That’s why documentations and photocopies are important!

Another problem you may encounter is that the status of your rebate shows up as denied/rejected. First double check to make sure the reason you were denied/rejected is not valid. If the reason they rejected your rebate is invalid, you should call them up immediately and sort it out. Generally with a phone call or 2, and maybe some transfers of documentation, your rebate will be validated. You may think this is “a scam” by rejecting your rebate for an invalid reason, but once again, the human component here is the problem. That’s why if a rebate has online filing, I try to do that if possible because it limits the amount of human interaction that may cause any type of error. There have been times where really ridiculous reasons have been provided such as “You did not provide an email address.” when the person received an email about the rejected rebate. However, once again, a phone call should set this straight.

Even if they rejected your rebate due to a valid reason, you might still be able to turn this around. Don’t call and scream at the CSR, but by civilized and respectful as you’re trying to get them to do you a one time favor, which they are usually more than happy to do.

That isn’t to say that I haven’t encountered any rebate problems. If you recall my post 2 months ago: Bait and Switch, many others and I were being scammed by CompUSA. The rebate center there has been reputable and I’ve gotten my rebate from them many times without any problems. However, problems like this can still arise. After many letters sent to our state attorney general and BBB (Better Business Bureau), CompUSA finally gave in and approved everyone’s rebate. This is just one of the very extreme cases and as you can see, with unity, consumers will prevail in the end.

Another common argument against rebates is the fact that if they’re giving rebates, why not give the discount at the checkout counter. Why bother with this whole rebate dance?

There’s actually a couple reasonings for that. The most common one that I hear is that they actually keep your money and make interest off it for the month or two that they hold your money. I personally don’t think this is a very good reasoning and honestly, I don’t think it has much truth behind it. However, I’m throwing it out there because I hear it a lot.

There are 2 main reasons I can think of why rebates are used instead of instant discounts.

  1. First off, most rebates are provided by the manufacturer and not the retail store you’re purchasing at. Let’s say I bought a calculator at Staples that came with a manufacturer’s rebate. Staples has already paid the calculator manufacturer and when your purchase the calculator from Staples, you’re actually paying money to Staples and not the manufacturer. Lets say the manufacturer wants to move items off the shelf because they’re planning to ship a new model. There they introduce the manufacturer’s rebate because Staples isn’t the one paying you, it’s the manufacturer. One can argue that the manufacturer can give the rebate difference directly back to Staples for each calculator they sell, but I can explain why that’s not done in my next reason. I actually heard that any item purchased from Costco that has a rebate, you’re actually mailing the rebate to Costco, Costco pays you immediately, and Costco in turn gets the rebate money directly from the manufacturer. That’s why Costco is one of my favorite rebate centers that I trust.
  2. Not everyone files for their rebate. I believe statistically speaking, only 1/3 of all valid rebates get filed and paid, however with more and more high ticket items with large rebates being provided, I heard that number has gone up. But let’s just assume only 1/3 of all rebates are paid out, others either getting rejected for not following directions or because people forgot about it or never knew about it. Anyway, with that in mind, companies can increase rebate amounts to make products more enticing. Lets say that they could lower the calculator by $10 if they gave an immediate discount. $10 off a $200 calculator might entice some, but not much. However, if only 1/3 of all rebates gets paid out, they can provide a $30 rebate, and by this redistribute the savings. In the end, they’ll end up getting about the same amount, but for those who are thorough and get their rebates will get a bigger savings. Those who are lazy and forgetful would have ended up paying full price. With a $30 rebate, it’s more enticing to people than just a $10 discount.

With that said, I end my rant. I think rebates are good, but they’re not for all people. Just like the stock market. People who only invest when everyone’s says its a good time, are people who will lose the most and then end up saying: the stock market is a scam.

Naruto Shippuuden

With the new arc of Naruto anime starting, I’ve begun watching it again. The last 100 episodes or so of the original arc were just fillers which I decided to skip as it’s not really based on anything worth watching, just random storylines they decided to add while they decide how begin the next arc. The new arc is called 疾風伝 (Shippuuden or Hurricane Chronicles) and it’s started out with a bang! The story takes place about 3 years later and the characters have grown up and have become more mature. Of course they have new skills and they’ll be introducing the new bad guys from 暁 (akatsuki which means dawn).

Anyway, I really like the opening song and sequence and decided to share it:

Large version:

While I was looking for the band’s name, I found this video: Naruto iPod. It’s using the same scheme with silhouettes, but the characters in there are Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. However, Naruto’s hair seems a big funky when it’s not spiky. The others are pretty good 3d cg models.

Splint

So back in January (or was it February), anyways, during the snow storm, I was clumsy and slipped and fell. I guess you could say I landed incorrectly by landing on my left hand, mostly on the thumb. Initially, there was pain and bruising, but the bruises went away after a few days of ice. I also took some Tylenol to counter the pain.

Anyway, 2 months later, my wrist still hurts when I apply pressure to it (i.e. doing push-ups), so I decided to go get it check. Regular hand/wrist usage works fine with no pain (i.e. typing). Having no idea how to go about this (since I didn’t even have a general physician around here – never really needed to see one), I decided to ask around and Vani recommended Dr. Norman Leou. I was able to get an appointment the following day and they took some X-rays, but he wasn’t able to see any type of fracture. He diagnosed it a bit further and suggested that I may have hurt my tendon during the fall. He said they generally heal in about a month and it’s rare that it’s taken over 2 months and still not healed yet. He referred me to Pacific Handworks in Bellevue for physical therapy and suggested I get a splint.

I didn’t really know what a splint nor had any idea what type of physical therapy I was getting. I kept imagining people who hurt their spine and need to relearn how to walk. Anyway, I set up an appointment with Pacific Handiworks and I found out what a splint is:

splintsplint

Anyway, according to the physician, when I fell, I damaged my tendon that controls my thumb and the my body sent a whole bunch of gunk to heal it. However, the body doesn’t really know how to clean out that gunk so whenever I use my thumb, the tendon grinds against those gunk and wounding it again. So now I have a splint that keeps my thumb immobile most of the time. I also have some wrist stretches and tendon gliding exercise I do 4-5x a day. Then there’s the hot and cold water switcheroo where I stick my hand in hot water for 2 mins, then in cold water, and repeat a couple times. Supposedly helps push the gunk back out. Time to recover is expected to be 2-3 weeks and I shouldn’t need to come in anymore. However, if it still hurts after 3 weeks, I should come back in.

Random Crap:

I was watching a new Chinese TV series and they used a phrased that my dad frequently used when we were kids: 自覺 (zi4 jue2). I believe this is a Cantonese only phrase and doesn’t really have a meaning in Mandarin. It has never dawned upon me that these were the 2 characters that were used to make up this phrase. The overall meaning to the phrase is similar to self discipline. 自覺D啦 = Have more self discipline or be more obedient. The words by themselves translate to literally self feel, but I think it’s a shortening of 自己覺得 or 自己發覺 which means self opinion or self realization, which is still pushing it to be self discipline or self obedient. I guess when you can realize the truth about something, self discipline comes afterwards.

My Costco only sold cup ramen of chicken flavor which I really dislike. Maybe it’s because I ate too much of it back at home, but then again I ate a bunch of shrimp flavored but I never seemed bored of that. Anyway, they didn’t sell the shrimp flavor here in Washington (at least the 2 Costco’s I’ve been to), so I stopped bothering to look for it whenever I went to Costco. Anyway, I happened to be in instant ramen section the other day and noticed they know have Kirkland Signature cup ramen! I wonder what Kirkland Signature doesn’t have. Anyway, there was only chicken flavor, but I decided to get it a try. I was shocked. I actually liked this new KS cup ramen. I’m not sure, but I think they actually have little chunks of chicken in it, but that may just be my imagination. They’re actually produced by Nissin (the same company that makes Top Ramen and 出前一丁). If you don’t know, 出前一丁 is my favorite ramen.

Scandal brews over China tea-for-urine samplesA group of Chinese reporters came up with a novel idea to test how greedy local hospitals were — pass off tea as urine samples and submit the drink for tests. The results: six out of 10 hospitals in Hangzhou, the capital of the rich coastal province of Zhejiang, visited by the reporters over a two-day period this month concluded that the patients’ urinal tracts were infected.

Boy puts urine in teacher’s coffee potAn eighth-grader faces expulsion after admitting he put urine in a teacher’s coffee pot, officials said. The Wilson Middle School teacher noticed that the coffee had an unusual odor Friday and reported it to the principal, Muncie Community Schools officials said. A student who overheard classmates discussing it also reported the incident to officials.

Teen ends up on ice chunk in Miss. RiverAmos Benjamin Cohen, 19, stood frozen with fear as the six foot by 15 foot ice chunk swirled in the water, floating toward shore then drifting back to the middle of the river, witnesses and rescuers said. “He stood there so still,” like the Statue of Liberty, said Sue Hillberg who spotted him from her mother’s kitchen window.

Lawsuit Says Education Dept. Overcharged on Student Loans (from Consumerist) – The Education Department penalizes consolidated loan borrowers who fail to make all of their annual payments by June 30 by adding penalties to the principal of their loans, on which they then have to pay extra interest. Pfeiffer discovered that she was being fined unfairly, her lawsuit says. She made her June payments on time and sometimes early. But the department was penalizing her for not making a separate payment for the days between her June payment and June 30, the suit says, even though her next wasn’t due until July 21. The penalties were then capitalized — or added to the principal of her loan. Interesting… Maybe I should start looking more closely at my loans.

Hundreds line up for sheep testiclesHundreds of people waited in lines for up to an hour for a chance to taste something different at the 16th annual Mountain Oyster Fry. Servers at five booths dispensed about 130 pounds of “fried oysters,” or sheep testicles, at the Saturday event in this historic mining town about 25 miles southeast of Reno.

Burglars steal 220-pound gold barA group of burglars stole a massive block of gold worth over $2 million from a Japanese museum in a heist that police said could have been prevented — if only the curators hadn’t left the showcases wide open. The Ohashi Collection Kan museum in Takayama, in central Japan, kept the 220-pound gold bullion unguarded by sensors or even by a case because it wanted visitors to be able to touch it, local police officer Shinji Kurake said Monday.

Windows Vista: more than just a pretty faceWindows Vista has had something of a troubled birth. Hyped features were pulled, and the project as a whole took far longer to complete than expected, partly due to standing still while MS dropped everything to work on Windows XP Service Pack 2, but in part also due to a decision to “reset” and scrap much of the new development. This has led some commentators to dub the project a “train wreck.” But is it? I found the review rather good as it actually tells you what is different in Vista instead of just the “new look”.

Blood Diamond

I watched this movie with CDMCC a month or 2 ago, but I’ve been rewatching the ending over and over again. It’s an very powerful movie and yet at the same time very touching. The story revolves around conflict diamonds and the steps needed to get the western world to stop buying diamonds from these conflict war zones and stop providing them with fund to purchase more weapons.

My favorite song out of the soundtrack is ‘London‘. According to iTunes, I’ve played it 99x already. I found a couple videos that featured this song:

There was one song that was used in the ending credits that wasn’t on the soundtrack which I really liked too: Nas – Shine On (music video).

[Intro: Nas]
They wanna shine on ’em
Shine on ’em <– 7X
Yeah

[Verse 1: Nas]
They dug me out the soil in the Mines of the Motherland
Now I’m misplaced, one hand to another hand
Illegal smugglin’, people strugglin’
Wish they could just throw me back in the mud again
Yeah, guess that’s how we got here
Slave Trade then the Diamond Trade
Every child’s afraid
When his Mother and Father get sprayed
Forced in the Army, young killer Brigade
Gets a new name and then he give his nose glue
Til’ his mind can’t take what he’s gon’ through
Lookin’ in that dirt for that ice so blue
Then The Royal Family, the ice goes to
And this thing has to change, feelin’ half-ashamed
As I rap with my Platinum chain
When you shop for a gift for me
You think about the misery?
The same way we made Apartheid History
We can do the same thing to the conflict ice
But everybody wanna shine, right?

[HooK: Nas]
Everybody wants Heaven but nobody wants dead
Everybody wants Diamonds without the Bloodshed
Everybody wants Heaven but nobody wants dead
Everybody wants Diamonds without the Bloodshed
They wanna Shine on ’em
Shine on ’em <– 7X

[Verse 2: Nas]
My VVS glimmers on my chest
200-thou-encrusted watch on my wrist
I wonder how people starve to death
When God bless the land that lacks the harvest
The stone’s equality, but they homes are poverty
And the whole world ignores the robbery
Bought my girl pretty rocks when she’s mad at me
Tear-drop shaped, uh, perfect Clarity
It shocks, so many are killed annually
‘Cause of greed, lust, and pure Vanity
Stop talkin’ and do somethin’ about it
Every Holiday Season, Jewelry stores crowded
Kids snatched from their homes, Mutilated alive
Husbands separated from wives, keep a Jesus piece to be fly
But back in the day there was a time when they called us shine

[HooK: Nas]
Everybody wants Heaven but nobody wants dead
Everybody wants Diamonds without the Bloodshed
Everybody wants Heaven but nobody wants dead
Everybody wants Diamonds without the Bloodshed
They wanna shine on ’em
Shine on ’em <– 7X

Protecting Keychain Membership Cards

I personally have a bunch of keychain membership cards (which I’m referring to all those club cards, reward cards, etc). Usually with such cards, you get a regular size card (same size as credit card) and 2 smaller ones which fit on on your keychain. Since my wallet is packed with other cards which are more important (credit cards, atm cards, driver license, medical cards, etc), my wallet became extremely packed. Safeway for some reason doesn’t distribute a keychain size card, so for some time, I was carrying the big Safeway club card around for some time. Now, I just enter my phone number so I don’t have to carry that big card around.

Anyway, last night when I was purchasing some game at BestBuy.com, I wanted to enter my BestBuy Reward Zone number, but here’s what I saw:
best buy reward zone keychain card - frontbest buy reward zone keychain card - back

A couple of my other cards have also began to fade away. Maybe that’s why the give you 2 keychain cards because they know that it’ll eventually rub away due to the constant friction against your keys and clothing.

Anyway, I decided to “laminate” my keychain cards, which I’m not sure why they didn’t do it in the first place. By “laminate”, I mean to just use tape and cover the barcode area. I use clear packaging tape which is typically stronger than regular scotch tape, but even regular scotch tape or “invisible” tape should work fine. Afterwards just take a scissor and cut off the protruding tape. I found it easier to just push the scissor than to actually cut. The sharp edges just made it slice the tape rather easy.

I had another interesting digital camera experience taking the above pictures. After my first shot, my Canon PowerShot S400 camera reported a “memory card error”. I turned off, gave it a few smacks and turned it on again and took the next few pictures without any problems. After sticking my CF card into USB reader, I noticed a couple pictures that was previously taken was now corrupted. Oh well. I was actually going to jump on that Dell deal where the Canon PowerShot SD600 was for $150, but I waited too long. I wanted to go home and use my $40 VISA gift card (since Dell can take 2 credit cards as payment), but I guess I snooze I lose.

Gym Class Heroes – Cupid’s Chokehold

First off, someone posted on Digg a special way to search for mp3 files on Google. All you have to do is go to Google and insert the following as your query:

{-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(wma|mp3) search term}

and replace “search term” with what you want.

I’ve also made a simple form so you can do it directly from this page.

MP3 Search Terms:
(requires clicking/activating button)

If you know how to capture the ‘enter’ key event when someone hits enter in the enter box, please let me know. I found this: Capturing a Key, but the way to do it in Netscape/Firefox seems somewhat round about.

Another MP3 search engine was posted on Digg: cr3ation b3ta. However, it’s been down for some time and I’m not sure if it’s the Digg Effect or if it’s down permanently. I’m not sure where it was getting it’s results, but they would slowly pop up as if it was parsing websites returned from a search engine and if it found a link with the mp3 extension and had the search term, it’d display it.

Heard another song on the radio that I really liked: Gym Class Heroes – Cupid’s Chokehold (music video). For some reason it reminds me of the song I heard back in ’95: Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity (music video).

Ba ba da da
Ba ba da da
Ba ba da da
Ba ba da da
Ba ba da da

Take a look at my girlfriend
She’s the only one I got (ba ba da da)
Not much of a girlfriend
I never seem to get a lot (ba ba da da, ba ba da da)

It’s been some time since we last spoke
This is gonna sound like a bad joke
But momma I fell in love again
It’s safe to say I have a new girlfriend

And I know it sounds so old
But cupid got me in a chokehold
And I’m afraid I might give in
Towels on the mat my white flag is wavin’

I mean she even cooks me pancakes
And Alka Seltzer when my tummy aches
If that ain’t love then I don’t know what love is

We even got a secret handshake
And she loves the music that my band makes
I know I’m young but if I had to choose her or the sun
I’d be one nocturnal son of a gun

(ba ba da da, ba ba da da)

Take a look at my girlfriend
She’s the only one I got (ba ba da da)
Not much of a girlfriend
I never seem to get a lot (ba ba da da, ba ba da da)

Take a look at my girlfriend
She’s the only one I got (ba ba da da)
Not much of a girlfriend
I never seem to get a lot (ba ba da da, ba ba da da)

It’s been awhile since we talked last and I’m tryin’ hard not to talk fast
But dad I’m finally thinkin’ I may have found the one
Type of girl that will make you way proud of your son

And I know you heard the last song about the girls that didn’t last long
But I promise this is on a whole new plane
I can tell by the way she says my name (ba ba da da)

I love it when she calls my phone
She even got her very own ringtone
If that ain’t love then I don’t know what love is (ba ba da da)

It’s gonna be a long drive home but I know as soon as I arrive home
And I open the door take off my coat and throw my bag on the floor
She’ll be back into my arms once more for sure

Take a look at my girlfriend
She’s the only one I got (ba ba da da)
Not much of a girlfriend
I never seem to get a lot (ba ba da da, ba ba da da)

She’s got a smile that would make the most senile
Annoying old man bite his tongue
I’m not done
She’s got eyes comparable to sunrise
And it doesn’t stop there
Man I swear
She’s got porcelain skin of course she’s a ten
And now she’s even got her own song
But movin’ on
She’s got the cutest laugh I ever heard
And we can be on the phone for three hours
Not sayin’ one word
And I would still cherish every moment
And when I start to build my future she’s the main component
Call it dumb call it luck call it love or whatever you call it but
Everywhere I go I keep her picture in my wallet like here

Take a look at my girlfriend
She’s the only one I got (ba ba da da)
Not much of a girlfriend
I never seem to get a lot (ba ba da da, ba ba da da)
