eBaum’s World sucks

This was brought to my attention recently by deadlock: eBaum’s World sucks. The main flash on the front page actually has a catchy tune and nice animation.

As you know, eBaum’s World hosts many flash animations and videos. It’s the place you visit when you want to find a funny flash and it’s most likely going to be on eBaum’s World even if you didn’t see it from there. Many people have complained that eBaum’s World stole their content and slapped on a eBaum’s logo on it and made money off it by selling ads on their site. They don’t even bother crediting the author of the content, hence people are calling them stealers. eBaum’s World “claims” that people submitted the content to them as their own and they always had the option of emailing them to take it off. But if you read the forums postings, you’ll noticed that eBaum’s World never replies to them, until force was applied.

Several users from the YTMND forums decided to launch an attack against eBaum’s World, even though the host of YTMND was against it. Check out the conversation Neil Bauman (CEO of eBaum’s World) had with Max (creator of YTMND): “Cease and Desist” from Neil Bauman

VoipBuster no longer free…

Booo! The month after I pay my 5€, calls through VoipBuster within the USA are no longer free.

There is a new company. Seems to be exactly like VoipBuster. Probably just a spawn and that’s how VoipBuster plans on making money. The new company is called VoipStunt and they currently allow free calls to any of the following countries:

Free calls to any regular landline in:

Australia       Austria         Belgium
Canada          Chile           China
Croatia         Cyprus          Denmark
Finland         France          Germany
Gibraltar       Hong Kong       Hungary
Iceland         Ireland         Israel
Italy           Japan           Liechtenstein
Lithuania       Luxembourg      Malaysia
Monaco          Netherlands     New Zealand
Norway          Poland          Portugal
Singapore       Slovak Republic South Korea
Spain           Sweden          Switzerland
Taiwan          United Kingdom  United States

Too bad I’m not willing to bust out another 5€ for this new service. I’ll just sit around and wait and see. I do have 100 free minutes each month with TelePacket already.

Random Crap:

Optical Mouse cam (from /.) – People get bored sometimes, and when I get bored I sometimes open up stuff to find out what makes it tick. One time, I did this with an old optical mouse. Well, a mouse only has 2 chips inside: the optical sensor and a chip for the usb/ps2-interfacing. I looked up the datasheet of the optical sensor (which is an ADNS2610) and it told me the sensor has a tiny 18×18 CCD, which can be read out using the serial port (the one which normally interfaces to the PS2/USB-chip). So I start Visual Basic (I usually do my stuff under Linux, but I’m no star at using anything graphical like QT or GTK, so for this quick’n’dirty project I fell back in my old habits) and hack something up using a few wires to the trusty ole parallel port. The result: crisp lo-res b&w imaging 🙂 People these days come up with the craziest things when they’re bored.

100 things we didn’t know this time last year (from Tera) – Each week the Magazine picks out snippets from the news, and compiles them into 10 Things We Didn’t Know This Time Last Week. Here’s an end of year almanac. Pretty interesting and fun read. Interesting ones I notice include (the bolded ones were the one I found to be the most interesting):

  • 3. While it’s an offence to drop litter on the pavement, it’s not an offence to throw it over someone’s garden wall.
  • 5. Nicole Kidman is scared of butterflies. “I jump out of planes, I could be covered in cockroaches, I do all sorts of things, but I just don’t like the feel of butterflies’ bodies,” she says.
  • 6. WD-40 dissolves cocaine – it has been used by a pub landlord to prevent drug-taking in his pub’s toilets.
  • 14. It’s possible for a human to blow up balloons via the ear. A 55-year-old factory worker from China reportedly discovered 20 years ago that air leaked from his ears, and he can now inflate balloons and blow out candles.
  • 19. The = sign was invented by 16th Century Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde, who was fed up with writing “is equal to” in his equations. He chose the two lines because “noe 2 thynges can be moare equalle”.

  • 32. “Restaurant” is the most mis-spelled word in search engines.

  • 69. First-born children are less creative but more stable, while last-born are more promiscuous, says US research.
  • 73. One in six children think that broccoli is a baby tree.
  • 76. The day when most suicides occurred in the UK between 1993 and 2002 was 1 January, 2000.

Humans display their stupid side to wildlife“I blame it on Walt Disney, where animals are given human qualities. People don’t understand that a wild animal is not something that is nice to pat. It can seriously harm you,” said James Cameron, a South African professional hunter. Haha. Blaming Disney movies because you didn’t know how to deal with wild animals. HAHAHAHA.

20GB of Space & 1TB of Bandwidth

Just got a newsletter from DreamHost, the host of my websites. They just quadrupled the space and octupled the bandwidth. For the same $10/mo, I now get 20GB of space and 1TB of bandwidth! Haha. This is crazy since I use only 400MB of space right now and less than 3GB of bandwidth a month.

Newcomers have the same deal too. If you pay for 2 years in advance, you can drop it to $8/mo.

The way they keep customers is by increase the amount of space and bandwidth each week at no additional charge. Space increases at a rate of 160MB/week and bandwidth increases at a rate of 8GB/week. I currently have 21360MB of space and 1050GB of bandwidth. Guess I don’t have to host videos offsite anymore.

They’re currently holding a deal where you get $88 off your first year! Remember to use the coupon code: DREAM88.

Google Unsafe Search

A few days ago, we were talking about Google and how you can turn off safe search. Google calls it SafeSearch Filtering. Anyway, I learnt from some friends that there is actually a website that utilizes Google results to do an unsafe search: mozy.org Unsafe Search

While Google allows you to filter pornography and explicit sexual content from your search results using their “SafeSearch” feature, they do not provide a means to search exclusively for such adult material.

It’s a shame when someone searching for pornographic material related to, say, llamas, is forced to slog though many pages of perfectly innocuous llama sites before finally hitting upon the llama porn he was looking for.

And nobody who does a Google search for “nice tits” wants to find a site like this one.

Use this form to conduct an “unsafe search.” The unsafe search works by performing two Google queries, a normal query and a query with SafeSearch enabled. The set of “safe” results is then subtracted from the set of normal results to yield only “unsafe” entries.

Have fun!

Windows Live Local

New Microsoft Service was released: Windows Live Local. It’s basically replaced MSN Virtual Earth. Some may say it’s a duplicate of Google Maps, but there’s several features that I like better about it. Well, first, lets get off the bad things. It has problems with Firefox, which basically limits my usage on it. But one of the best thing is the bird’s eye view. It appears they sent planes or helicopters across many metropolitan cities and tooks pictures of it so you have a better zoom which is awesome! It’s awesome that I can see my backyard and even my car tent in front of my garage back home in Monterey Park. Other neat features I found is the middle click which allows you to draw a rectangle which it will then zoom into. I’ve always HATED the magnify glass cause I would usually have to zoom multiple times to get it to just the area I want. But now with the box zoom, problem solved! One last thing is the right click feature. Ever seen a map and knew you wanted to go to point x but you didn’t know the address, so you had to give an intersection or something to get to the correct place. I never really got why this feature wasn’t implemented in the 1st place. I know where I want to go on the map. I don’t know the exact address. Give me the directions to it. Well, it’s now just as simple as a right click and selecting Drive To, Drive From, or Add Pushpin. If you have time, might want to give a test drive. Checking out the city in bird’s eye view was definitely really fun.

By the way, did you get a chance to play with the printing. Oh my god! It’s so much better than any other mapping service that I’ve seen. In the print options, it gives me quite a few things I’ve always wanted. Who the heck needs all the directions for getting from one’s house to the freeway or vice versa? Windows Live Local allows to omit parts of the directions if you don’t need them, which ends up saving paper and not having to go through 13 directions when you only need the last 4. Another great feature is the options of printing the route map, route summary, directions, and/or notes. In the route map, you can select 2 different map styles, and 3 different map sizes. Next to each direction is a checkbox if you want to include a small detail map next to it. So if a map like driving from point A to point B of a freeway isn’t needed, you can turn that map off but leave others on. I can’t believe Microsoft actually did something so much better this time.

If you don’t like all these confusing options, they have 3 default presets:

  • Print the map and directions
  • Print the directions only
  • Print the map only

which should be plenty easy for you.

Archive links in Drop-Down Menu (Combo Box)

Here’s a simple hack you can modify your default theme in WordPress to get your Archive links to show in a drop-down menu (combo box) instead of having it spawn 10+ lines and take up precious space. Under Presentation -> Themes -> Theme Editor -> Sidebar Template, modify the following code

<li><h2>Archives</h2>
<ul>
<?php wp_get_archives('type=monthly'); ?>
</ul>
</li>

to

<li><h2>Archives</h2>
<form name="archive" action="post">
<select name="archiveLinks" size="1" onchange="parent.location = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;" >
<option value="">Select an Archive</option>
<?php wp_get_archives('type=monthly&format=option'); ?>
</select>
</form>
</li>

Remove Ads for Registered Users

Don’t have Adblock? Don’t like seeing ads? Well, if you register now, all the ads on my blog should be removed. This does not include the Gallery, which I’m stll investigating. Enjoy!

I also have a plans to port my entire old blog onto this new one, but that’s going to take some time. I’m not sure if I want to work on the new layout more or work on importing the old blog more. What do you guys think?

Blingo!

Won again at Blingo! But still only a $10 iTunes Gifit Certificate. Has anyone tried the Blingo Movie Ticket yet? How easy is it to use it?

Blingo

I currently have a balance of $21.58 on my iTunes account balance, none of which were paid by me. My first iTunes gift certificate was from Liam. Then I got $20 more in gift certificates from Blingo. Now I’ll be getting $10 more. Will I ever pay a penny at the iTunes music store? Still I’m curious on how I got some weird balance left of 58 cents. Boooo! They’re charging tax! When did this start? I’m getting charge 8 cents more per song. Hmmmm… I wonder if my address is still in CA or if that matters at all. Nope, I updated to Washington. My purchase history shows earlier purchases didn’t incur any sales tax. I wonder if it’s because I updated my address to Washington… Going to change it back to CA and see what happens with my next purchase.

I found a new referer: BasuGasuBakuhatsu. Not too sure who he is yet and his blog just started, but the title literally translate to Bus Gas Explosions. If you’re the writer of BasuGasuBakuhatsu, please do let me know who you are either by IM, email, or leaving a comment.

He also had an interesting thing on the bottom of his blog using Technorati to rate how much his blog is worth. I gave it a try and found out mine’s worth $564.54.
