Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Decided to watch this movie after being recommended to me by ChemChampion plus the fact this was the 1st part of Chan-wook Park‘s vengeance trilogy, which was followed by Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Although it’s a trilogy, the stories have nothing to do with each other, just different vengeance stories. I already have Sympathy for Lady Vengeance on queue, but I wonder if it’ll surpass the excellence of Oldboy.

I’m not sure if I’d recommend it. It was a very interesting movie, but left me puzzled and confused over many things.

How Heavy is This Glass of Water?

How Heavy is This Glass of Water? (from Zena):

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised A glass of water and asked, “how heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied,
“The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, You’ll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it’s the same weight, But the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

He continued, “And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, Sooner or later, As the burden becomes increasingly heavy, We won’t be able to carry on.”

“As with the glass of water, You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding It again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”
“So, before you return home tonight, Put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, Let them down for a moment if you can.”
“Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested. Life is short. Enjoy it! And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:”

  • Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue.
  • Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
  • Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
  • Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
  • If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
  • If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
  • It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
  • Never buy a car you can’t push.
  • Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.
  • Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.
  • Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
  • The second mouse gets the cheese.
  • When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
  • Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
  • You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
  • Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today. I did.

V for Vendetta

Wow! This movie was a lot better than I had expected. Then again, I tried watching Ultraviolet (review to come later) and I was just blown away with how stupid and boring it was. Definitely a must see and one of the better comic made movies that I’ve seen. Not as great as Batman Begins, but pretty high up there. They had pretty much the same motto too: A man can die, but an idea, an idea can live forever.

0^0

No, that’s not a new smiley face of mine. So Xyon and I had a discussion today on what 0^0 (zero to the power of zero) equaled. I had always learnt that was undefined/undeterminate, but he learnt that it could equal either 0 or 1, and user gets to choose.

For me,

limit of x^0 as x approaches 0 = 1
limit of 0^x as x approaches 0 = 0

These 2 lines never intersect and therefore the limit of x^y as x and y approaches 0 = UNDEFINED (as I recalled in my calculus book).

However, we were looking a number sequences and they defined that 0^0 = 1, which started this whole debate in the 1st place.

We punched it into Google and got: 0^0 = 1.
We then tried to punch it into Maple and got the same answer.

Xyon then brought up a good point on how exponents are defined. Although this may not be the correct definition, it’s what has persisted it appears: x^y = 1 * (x multipled y times), therefore 1 * (any number multiplied 0 times) will always = 1.

However, from Math Forum:

According to some Calculus textbooks, 0^0 is an “indeterminate form.” What mathematicians mean by “indeterminate form” is that in some cases we think about it as having one value, and in other cases we think about it as having another.

The following is a list of reasons why 0^0 should be 1.

Rotando & Korn show that if f and g are real functions that vanish at the origin and are analytic at 0 (infinitely differentiable is not sufficient), then f(x)^g(x) approaches 1 as x approaches 0 from the right.

From Concrete Mathematics p.162 (R. Graham, D. Knuth, O. Patashnik):

Some textbooks leave the quantity 0^0 undefined, because the functions 0^x and x^0 have different limiting values when x decreases to 0. But this is a mistake. We must define x^0=1 for all x , if the binomial theorem is to be valid when x=0 , y=0 , and/or x=-y . The theorem is too important to be arbitrarily restricted! By contrast, the function 0^x is quite unimportant.

Published by Addison-Wesley, 2nd printing Dec, 1988.

As a rule of thumb, one can say that 0^0 = 1 , but 0.0^(0.0) is undefined, meaning that when approaching from a different direction there is no clearly predetermined value to assign to 0.0^(0.0) ; but Kahan has argued that 0.0^(0.0) should be 1, because if f(x), g(x) –> 0 as x approaches some limit, and f(x) and g(x) are analytic functions, then f(x)^g(x) –> 1 .

Jeopardy – What’s a Ho(e) (from MS newsgroup) – A rather old video, but is always funny and should give you a few chuckles. Alex Trebeck asks, “This term for a long-handled gardening tool can also mean an immoral pleasure seeker” and Ken Jennings replies with, “What’s a ho(e).” It took Alex a moment before realizing the pun. Looking at the scores, Ken Jennings was dominating.

Could coffee protect your liver against alcohol?Drinking coffee may shield the liver from the worst ravages of alcohol, a study of more than 125,000 people suggests. The risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver dropped with each cup of coffee they drank per day. “Consuming coffee seems to have some protective benefits against alcoholic cirrhosis, and the more coffee a person consumes the less risk they seem to have of being hospitalised or dying of alcoholic cirrhosis,” says Arthur Klatsky at Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Programme in Oakland, California, US, who led the study. Haha, there’s no more need to worry about your liver since you can fix it by drinking coffee. I always find it interesting people are always trying to find good health benefits from food that are generally bad for health.

Man eats 47 cheese sandwiches in 10 min. There’s a rising star on the competitive eating circuit. California man Joey Chestnut downed 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in ten minutes this weekend in Las Vegas to set a world record. That’s eleven more sandwiches than the old record of 36.

Beer ingredient may fight prostate cancerFor many men, a finding by Oregon researchers sounds too good to be true: an ingredient in beer seems to help prevent prostate cancer, at least in lab experiments. The trouble is you’d theoretically have to drink about 17 beers a day for any potential benefit. And no one’s advising that. “Dear, you’ve drunk too much already.” “But it helps fight prostate cancer!”

After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.

iPods knock over beer mugs (from /.) – That iPods are “in” on college campuses might not surprise you. That Apple’s portable music players are more popular than beer? Now that’s surprising. How NOT to steal a SideKick II (from /.) – An interesting story where someone’s cell phone got stolen is able to track the user and report her findings. I dunno if the person was a guy or girl, but she talks like a girl, so I’m going to assume it’s a she. Anyway, the person who took the cell phone (or claims to have bought it from a taxi driver) apparently took pictures of herself and her friends and family and uploaded online. Of course being on someone else’s account, the original owner had access to all these photos. The latest outcome seems that she sold the cell phone, but I have a hunch it was another friend of the thief trying to get the original owner off their tail.

Dvorak Admits To Trolling Mac Users (from /.) – I was talking with Dvorak at the Vloggercon party this evening, and he started telling a story about how he deliberately pisses Mac users off to get flow for his stories, and I said, hold a minute, I want to record this, and shit if he didn’t stop and repeat it for me and my video camera. I guess now I’m an official video blogger. You can see the video here (torrent). I’ve also posted the video here (streaming) (mirror). Basically Joh Dvorak gives a talk about how he gets “numbers” for his site. First he posts a story that’ll get Mac users angry and stir up a riot. However, he’d also word it in such an ambiguous way, it’ll give him outs. After tons of hate mail, he’ll post a follow-up response saying how everyone misunderstood and misinterpretted him and this pisses off the Mac users even more. Finally he posts a 3rd entry completely opposite of his original entry, saying how wrong he was all along and everyone else was right and the “numbers go through the ceiling”. Pretty sad I’d have to say.

Google Browser Sync

So ever since /. and Ars Technica reported about the Google Browser Sync, I’ve been using it for the past week or so and here are my comments and opinions.

I wouldn’t say this is the best firefox extension ever or wouldn’t say this is unique and the first of its kind, but I would say it’s a heck of a lot better than what was out there. I’ve tried many bookmark synching utilities and none of them have every really met my expectations and I just ended up ditching them and after awhile, stopped searching for new ones. If you search extensions for Firefox, you’ll know there’s bee a bunch out like:

So lets talk about the good stuff first. It not only lets you sychronize your bookmarks, but also lets you choose if you want to synchronize your passwords, your history, your cookies, and your tabs/windows. Next to each syncable item, you have the option to encrypt it. Honestly, I don’t know who would synch their passwords with Google, even if they do encrypt it. It’s like giving Google all the keys to your online identity (even if they claim to be not ‘evil’). I’m only synching my bookmarks at the moment and have enabled encryption and the sychronization occurs seamlessly.

Installation was pretty easy. Clicked on the extension, and it installed. After restarting Firefox, it prompted me to log into my Google account and then set a PIN for encryption. However, the initial setup may take some time if your two browsers have many discrepancies between them, especially if 2 bookmarks have the same URL, but different names/description. I had a bunch of duplicates initially, but after spending 15 minutes or so cleaning up and synching, my bookmarks were the way I want. They also don’t save the site icon which when synching left me with a row of iconless toolbar with now names.

Okay, now on to the bad stuff. First and formost is the fact my data is stored on Google servers. Even though Google may claim to be ‘not evil’ and lets assume they won’t abuse my data, someone might still be able to hack there servers. Since I’m only synching my bookmarks, I’m not too worried since I don’t have any incriminating bookmarks. You should also make sure you didn’t set a bookmark that included your username/password (i.e. http://username:password@www.site.com). The previous synching tools I’ve used before allowed me to setup a ftp server which it’ll upload and download my bookmarks to and from. This however only occurred when I opened my browser and when I closed my browser and lets just say often times my ordering of my bookmarks got messed up. Though I guess Google wants to collect data, and by allowing us to use private servers, they won’t be able to collect the data they want.

Next thing which is really annoying is if you’re using 2 different machines simulataneously with Firefox on, ONLY one of the browsers can be connected to Google’s server. The other one would prompt a error box saying I’ve been signed on somewhere else and would I like to reconnect. By clicking reconnect, my other session gets signed off. I personally think this defeats the purpose of having the browser sync, though I guess it makes Google’s programmers’ lives easier.

The next few issues revolve around the PIN. One thing right off the bat is that Google allows anyone that has access to your profile to see your PIN, just by opening a browser with your profile, going into the tool’s setting, and clicking on the Show button in the Security PIN area. Also, from the FAQ:

Why do I need to provide a PIN?

The PIN you create during setup is used to encrypt information that’s synced between your computers, which may include sensitive information such as your passwords for websites. We use your PIN to unlock that information. Without your PIN, no one will be able to read the information that’s being transmitted between your computers via Google Browser Sync.

What’s the point of encrypting my information?

By encrypting your information, it will be transmitted to and stored on Google’s servers in a format that is nearly impossible to interpret without the PIN. That means that without the PIN, no one, not even Google, will be able to read your data. Therefore, it’s important to choose a good PIN (at least 8 characters including both numbers and letters) that’s hard to guess and to keep your PIN safe. Note that encrypting all of your browser settings may affect the performance of Google Browser Sync and Firefox.

I hope that just means they use my PIN to decrypt my data locally and they don’t store my PIN on their server.

Who On Earth Are You?

Got two more Detective Conan scenes to share:

Detective Conan – Who On Earth Are You? – In Detective Conan Special Episode #304 – A Shaking Police HQ and 12 Million Hostages, Conan decides to not diffuse a bomb because apparently they needed to wait for the clue to pinpoint another bomb location. He apologizes to Detective Takagi and Takagi asks, “Who on earth are you?” Conan replies, “Oh, well if you really want to know… then I’ll tell you… in the next world.”

Initially, Windows Movie Maker was coughing. Super was coughing. Even VirtualDub was coughing. I mean, the video plays fine, but those software just couldn’t find the codec need to parse it. I looked at the file and it apparently was encoded with DivX 3. I have FFDShow installed and that supposedly installs a whole lot of codecs that can parse every XviD and DivX codec there is. But apparently, that wasn’t enough. I had to actually install DivX Codec 3.11 Alpha before the video edit programs would even accept the file. DivX Codec 3.11 Alpha sure does bring back memories.

The second one is:

Detective Conan – Confession of Love – In Movie 4 – Captured In Her Eyes, Ran gets amnesia from shock after seeing Detective Sato getting shot to near death. Conan decides that he’ll do everything in his power to protect her as the culprit may want to kill her before she regains her memory. When Ran questions Conan why he’s protecting her so much, Conan replies, “Because I love you. In this world, I love you more than anyone else.”

Enjoy!

Another Awesome Detective Conan Moment

First I wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY OHFUEE!

Just wanted to share this clip with you. I’ve seen this awhile back, but Kaizou’s been releasing a bunch of Detective Conan fansubs recently and they’re the episodes I haven’t watched that led up to this major battle between Kudo, the FBI, and Chris Vineyard. WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS!!! Here’s the video clip:

Detective Conan – But no reason is needed for saving someone

I won’t bother going into the details of how they got to this point. Chris Vineyard is about to shoot Sherry (Haibara Ai) and Ran dashes out from the trunk and as the sniper is trying to shoot her down, Ran jumps out to cover and protect Sherry. All the same time Chris is shouting to Calvados (sniper) to stop shooting. I’ve always had the impression that Chris Vineyard likes Kudo and Ran, but never knew why until now, as she reflects back to the first time they met. She was disguised as a buglar and she runs in to Ran during her escape and was about to kill her. However, she accidentally slips and was moments from falling off the building. However, Ran rescues her and she was dumbfounded and asks “Why… Why did you save me? Why?” Kudo says, “Is a reason needed? There are many reasons for killing, but no reason is needed for saving someone.” From that point forward, Kudo Shinichi (Edogawa Conan) has been referred by her as Cool Kid and Ran has been referred by her as Angel.

I won’t spoil the ending of this battle, but if you want to watch this episode, it’s episode #345 – Head-to-Head Match With Black Organization, Two Mysteries Night of the Full Moon. It’s a 2-hour special and was really fun.

More Xbox 360 Stuff

So I mentioned that the cables provided weren’t long enough. Did they really think 2ft of cable between component input and composite audio input would be enough. So I only had 2 options at this point, which was to buy extension cables for the audio cables or get a optical audio cable. If you look closely at the connector that plugs into the Xbox 360, you’ll see a little hole where you can stick in an optical audio cable. I thought I might as well invest in an optical audio cable, since I have plenty of composite audio cable connects back home in LA.

So I search online for a bit and most places were selling the cable for $10 or more shipped. I did end up finding this at Amazon.com: StarTech.com 10FT THIN TOSLINK DIGITAL ( THINTOS10 ). Buy.com is also selling it for $5.99. Both have free shipping over $25, but I’m on the Prime trial for Amazon.com and 2-day shipping is free. Plus I somehow have a $10 GC in my Amazon.com account, so the choice was pretty obvious. Who knows, maybe I could’ve gotten it cheaper locally, but I’m too lazy like that.

Stanman came by today and we played hours of Project Gotham Racing 3 and Perfect Dark Zero.

PGR3 is realistic, but I never really found realistic racing games to be all that much fun. We did get a lot better and actually changed the opponent’s skill level from Novice to Easy to Medium (you’d think easy would be below novice) and also ended up giving them Class C cars (we drove Class B cars). I personally had a hard time controll Class A cars and kept crashing into the wall.

Afterwards, I showed him the demo of Ridge Racer 6. That racing game I think is a lot more fun, with the easier control and drifting abilities. I also showed him how fun Geometry War was, though I’m still trying to find cheap points to purchase to get the full game.

We finally played a couple hours of Perfect Dark Zero as we tried out all the different weapons. We started off fighting Agent bots, but near the end, upgraded them to Secret Agent bots. The control takes a bit to figure out and it got qutie annoying because I’d always tap by left joystick and that means to crouch. It’s also hard to tell if you’re crouching or not until you realize you’re moving really slow.

So one question I wanted to find out was what the difference between Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Live Silver was. The Silver subscription is free, and I forget how much the Gold subscription is, but it’s not free. I went with Silver, but it automatically gave me a month trial of Gold (which would automatically degrade to Silver after a month, unless I explicitly tell them I want to subscribe). From this FAQ:

Q. What is Xbox Lvie Silver?

A. Xbox Live Silver is a free version of the Xbox Live service. The main difference between the Gold and Silver levels of service is that you can’t play online multiplayer games with Xbox Live Silver. You can still download content from the Xbox Live Marketplace, download games in the Xbox Live Arcade, and keep a friends list so you can chat and share your gamer profile and achievements.

So it turns out the only difference is you can play multiplayer online. I really doubt I’d do that much as I’m not really a online gamer type nor play games online much. The only time I play multiplayer is probably when I go over to a friend’s house or they come to mine. Looks like I can still download updates, demos, arcade games, and videos and basically anything from their marketplace with my Silver account.

The ability to download demos for the Xbox 360 is pretty awesome. So far I’ve gotten Ridge Racer 6, Full Auto, and Top Spin 2. Each demo is like 700megs and you only have 20GB of space. For some reason, it’s reporting I only have 10GB free now. I think I started with 14GB, but even if I use 20,000,000,000 bytes, I should still be at 18.6GB. I wonder what intially took up that much space. It did come with some videos and the Hexic game, but I doubt that took up 4GB itself. My user profile’s also there, but once again, this is a missing 4GB. There were no demos preloaded into the Xbox 360 that I can recall.
