Power Outage

Arggggggh…..

So I was doing laundry and vacuuming at the same time when the breaker snapped. My apartment’s electricity is already finicky from the start, but I thought all I had to do was flip the breaker back on. I go to my breaker panel and and all the breakers were in their on position. I try flipping a few off and on, but that didn’t seem to help. I even tried flipping all of them off, waited a few mintues, and flipping them all back on. No luck.

I then went to talk to the apartment manager, so she tells me about this “other” breaker switch that’s supposed to be in my 2nd bedroom. I go back down and can’t find it. Apparently the 1st floor breaker panel location is different from the other floors. Anyway, the maintenance guy won’t be here until tomorrow and there’s no one around to help me. I give PSE (Puget Sound Energy) a call, and they told me that because my neighbor’s electricity was still on, that a power outage that they’re responsible for was unlikely. She said she could send someone out, but if they find out the fault isn’t theirs, they can charge up to $150 for the visit. So I’m like, let me talk to my apartment manager again. We didn’t get too far with the 2nd talk, but she did mention about a main breaker switch, but had no idea where it was at. She asked if I had any place to stay tonight and I said I could probably take care of that in the case where I do need to find some place.

I went back and started searching outside the complex. I found the electric meters and they were all locked. Then I noticed this small latch underneath each meter which wasn’t locked. I opened the one that seemed to be mine, since it’s the lowest one and its meter wasn’t moving. Behold, it was off. I switched it back on, and my power came back up. I thought I was set.

I go and tell my apartment manager and she’s happy and I’m happy. I come back and find out, not everything is working. My washing machine and dryer won’t turn out. Trying to use it to actually knocks the power out for several rooms. My bedroom electricity seems to be super finicky, where turning on a light will dim lights in other rooms. My computer won’t even turn out w/o switching over to the UPS power supply.

But not all hope is lost. There seems to be a set of outlets that aren’t affected. I’ve moved my computer out there for the time being.

So I went and tried to troubleshoot this problem. I turned each breaker off one at a time, to see if there was a certain breaker that was causing this problem. That didn’t turn up anything useful. I unscrewed the outlet where the vacuum cleaner was last plugged in, but everything in there seemed fine. I was thinking something might’ve shorted or is still being shorted.

Anyway, I’ll have to talk with the apartment manager again tomorrow to resolve this.

WordPress 2.0.1

Just upgraded to WordPress 2.0.1. The process actually went quite smoothly. The detailed instructions were quite helpful: Upgrading WordPress.

So just to note, if you see any problems or anything not working, please do let me know. I noticed the (Show/Hide) functions on my friends and personal site list is missing, probably due to the upgrade and replaced files, so I’ll be fixing that shortly.

Thanks!

Some initial changes I’ve noticed included the Write Post page has a bunch of upgrades. Starting with a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) text editor with a fast hotkey (alt+e) which opens a new window where you can edit html code directly. Then there’s the Panels on the right which allows for changing of the post status and categories and etc. There’s this new flag where it allows you to Password-Protect a post. I don’t recall seeing that in 1.5.x, but I may be wrong on this account.

They’ve included a backup utilty which backs up your database. I wish it also backed up my wordpress files because sometimes I edit them directly, so I might be installing the old backup plugin I had before. If you want to try that, download One Click Back and Restore plugin for WordPress 1.5. Although it’s listed as for 1.5, it’s listed as compatible for 2.0 in the 2.0 Plugin Compatibility list.

There doesn’t seem to be a new default theme. The default theme is the 1.5 one that my current site is based off of.

The preview pane in the write post page is now updated to reflect what it’ll show using your theme, so you can make sure the text is aligned correctly and etc.

Haven’t seen much other change yet, but if you know something I don’t, please do tell.

Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000

Don’t think I mentioned it, but I went and got the Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000 (Amazon link) to replaced the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (Amazon link) because I finally had enough of it. You can read the reasons why I got annoyed with it in my previous blog entry.

microsoft laser mouse 6000

My initial impression is it’s a lot better than the wireless one. There are some major differences between the wired and the wireless version, which was surprising (to me at least). I had imagined the only thing different might be the color and one is wireless. Turns out that the wired version DOES NOT have the tilt wheel. I think in this case, that’s a good thing. Since I’ve become very dependent on the middle click, the middle click on the wireless version was very awful and requried a tremendous amount of force for it to work. It was probably because they didn’t want you to accidentally middle click when you wanted to tilt left/right. I wouldn’t mind if they would’ve allowed me to reprogram what tilting left/right would do, but it’s programmed to scroll horizontally and with a 24″ wide screen LCD @ 1920×1280, I really never have to scroll horizontally anymore, rendering the tilt wheel useless.

Another major difference is that the wired version has 1 button on each side, while the wireless version has 2 buttons on the left side. I don’t really have a preference because I really disliked both placement of the buttons. My favorite mouse of all time is still the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical Mouse. This new wired laser mouse is very close to that, but imagine the side buttons to be really small and clicking it requried actually reaching for it. The side buttons on the Intellimouse Optical were large and my hand thumb and ring finger were naturally on it. I guess this was to prevent users from accidentally clicking on the side buttons, but having to use my thumb to reach the left side button is a bit of a workout.

Final thing I have to say about the mouse is that there’s this logo/sticker/button above the Microsoft logo that gets annoying when you brush against it. The surface of the mouse is smooth, but that logo has a very harsh surface. Nothing too major really, but another thing I would’ve not missed if they excluded it.

After all this, the mouse is quite sensitive and I’m enjoying it a lot.

My Fridge – Rotting Meat

So I was cleaning out my fridge the other day. Threw out a bunch of food. Haha. I think I’m going to only purchase food that lasts longer than a year from costco now. Threw away an unopened package of ham (the ones that usually come in 2 packs). It expired on 11/2005. Threw away 1/2 a pack of hot links. I think there were like 12 hot dogs altogether, but white stuff was growing on it when I checked it. I think I got the hot dogs back in December. I don’t exactly remember anymore. I had 1 Chinese sausage (臘腸) left from August when my cousing gave it to me. That went into the trash. I also threw away 3/4 of my package of salami. I never did eat that much of it besides when I had croissants and cheese. That was purchased back in August or September too when I first got my Costco card. There was stuff growing on the salami too. Haha.

You know what’s the best? Cereal. These guys last forever! Oh yah! Pasta too! Trying to think what else is in my fridge. Hot wings, mozzarella cheese sticks, dumplings, chicken nuggets, ice cream, cream puffs, fish and shrimp balls (what was left from our Chinese New Year hot pot), water, juice, bread, eggs, soda, tons of sauces, and … yogurt… Shoot, I think those yogurt expired back in October or November. Haha, into the trash they will go.

That reminds me, I need to do laundry this weekend, or what remains of it.

Imagination is a powerful thing

So I was driving home today and on my way back, I noticed a bunch of duck crossing and deer crossing signs. Nothing out of the ordinary here in Washington. Suddenly, I noticed a dead pigeon lying on the road. By the time I realized it, I had about a second to process that information before I drove over it. I don’t know my wheels actually rolled over it, but my mind immediately started playing tricks and assumed I did. I didn’t feel any bump or anything, but the moment my wheels would’ve rolled over it, there was a bright flash in my mind and I cringed and almost swerved. For some reason, I just couldn’t focus for that few seconds. It also took some time for me to recover my composure.

Now I’m trying to remember the recent movie that had a similar line. I’m thinking it’s Oldboy when the prison owner was about to take his revenge and pretends to pluck Daesu’s teeth out with a hammer and Daesu screams. The prison owner goes, “Imagination can be such a powerful thing.”

While looking up character names in Oldboy on IMDb, I noticed there was going to be a new Oldboy movie to be released in 2006. Clicking on it revealed that it’s a remake of a Korean film of the same name, a recently paroled middle-aged man, who spent 15 years in prison without any explanation as to why he was jailed, seeks revenge on those who conspired against him. In the trivia section, it states: The original version was a Korean language film based on a Japanese comic book, will be remade by Taiwanese director from Orange County, California. I wonder if they’re going to screw this up like many of the other remakes they borrowed from Asia.

Final Fantasy VII

So I finally beat the game. Didn’t really do much of the side quests as I later found out. Didn’t even get any of my characters ultimate weapons nor level 4 limit breaks. Just a bunch of Ultima and Comet 2 and Bahamut Zero and Neo Bahamut. I was actually expecting Sephiroth to be a lot harder since my characters weren’t exactly optimal and I was frantic they didn’t give me a save point anywhere near the end of the game which meant if I lost I’d have to defeat Jenova and both Sephiroths again.

The game was entertaining and I finally saw how the movie Advent Children and the game connected. One of my 1st questions regarding Advent Children was what the heck were those colorful crystal balls? If I had played FF7 at all, I would’ve known they were material.

It turns out the move that Cloud uses to defeat Kadaj was the Omnislash, a limit break which I did not get because it costed too many BP (battle points), but I did get to see it in action when I defeated Sephiroth with it.

Also, the intro scene with Red XIII and 2 cubs running is the epilogue after the ending credits in the game. I’ve compared the 2 scenes and they’re almost identical, but I think the cubs were cuter in the original game. Here are some pictures for comparison:

I had tried to look for the video online, but didn’t have much success. I did find the ending video though if you’re interested.

It turns out the video is on the CD just as an avi, so I uploaded it to my gallery: Final Fantasy VII – Epilogue. For some reason, the hue is extremely red. When I watched it in the game, it wasn’t that red and in fact looked pretty much like the pictures I posted above. I wonder if there’s actually 2 set of videos or maybe they’re using another codec to display the avi.

$1.6K credit card bill?

So I got my credit card bill in my email today and it said I owed them $1.6k. I’m like wo… what did I buy this month. Upon further inspect, it turns out that $600 was from my previous bill which is set to be paid on 2/13 (due date). So with $1k left, half of it is actually from my car insurance payment. $495 for 6-months with full coverage is pretty good. Decided to go with Safeco because all the other guys were quoting me $800+.

Random Crap:

Judge shelves case over Jesus’ existenceAn Italian atheist lost his legal crusade against the Catholic Church on Thursday when a judge rejected his attempts to sue a priest for saying that Jesus existed 2,000 years ago, the priest’s lawyer said. Luigi Cascioli, 72, had argued his hometown priest and former schoolmate had effectively broken an Italian law meant to protect the public from being conned. But instead of granting Cascioli his request to bring the case to court, the judge recommended magistrates investigate him for slandering priest Enrico Righi, Righi’s lawyer, Bruno Severo said. … Asked about the possibility he would be tried for slander, Cascioli chuckled, saying that to prove he lied, prosecutors would have to prove that Jesus existed. I have a question regarding slander laws, well at least here in the US. If I sue you for slandering me, do I have to prove you lied or do you have to prove you’re telling the truth. Let’s say politician A claims politican B was involved in some corruption case. If politician B says politician A is slandering, does A have to prove he’s telling the truth or B have to prove otherwise or that A’s lying. I would’ve thought that A would have to prove that B was involved in some corruption case, or else he/she’d be slandering B. Analogous to this story would be this man having to prove Jesus doesn’t exist in order to clear the slandering claim, which I have to say is feat as big as proving he does exist.

Philly Bus Driver Tosses Woman Off BusA transit bus driver grabbed a woman by the hair, knocked her head into a pole, opened the door and tossed her into traffic after she yelled at him for missing her stop, police said. … Edney said he had to skip the woman’s stop Wednesday morning because of a detour, police said. Although I agree he’s reaction was a bit harsh, I’d be pissed if someone like that woman was getting on my nerves. I feel sorry for the guy.

Model World (from MS newsgroup) – It’s often hard to convince people that Olivo Barbieri’s aerial photographs are real. They look uncannily like hyperdetailed models, absent the imperfections of reality. Streets are strangely clean, trees look plastic, and odd distortions of scale create the opposite effect of what we expect from aerial photography–a complete overview, like military surveillance. “I was a little bit tired of the idea of photography allowing you to see everything,” Barbieri says. “After 9/11 the world had become a little bit blurred because things that seemed impossible happened. My desire was to look at the city again.” Oh my god! If I didn’t read that, I would never have known these were actual photos. They look so cool, like models! You need to DEFINITELY go check out some of his photos.

Zillow (from Tekman) – An interesting site that lets you know how much your house is worth and what houses sold for that are around you in the same category. Check out how much Bill Gate’s house is worth! At the time of posting, it’s at $117.1M.

Babies’ Cells Linger, May Protect Mothers (from /.) – Some scientists have proposed that when a woman has a baby, she gets not just a son or a daughter, but a gift of cells that stays behind and protects her for the rest of her life. That’s because a baby’s cells linger in its mom’s body for decades and — like stem cells — may help to repair damage when she gets sick. It’s such an enticing idea that even the scientists who came up with the idea worry that it may be too beautiful to be true. So when mom’s say they feel like they still have a part of you in them, they really mean it!

Potato danger: you want collision with that?Frozen squirrels, angry wasps and obstructive potatoes were among some of the reasons given by motorists to support their insurance claims, Norwich Union said Monday. … The squirrel motorist said the frozen animal had fallen out of a tree and crashed through the windshield while another driver blamed a wasp sting on the leg for a sudden surge in acceleration and a bump with the car in front. One driver even blamed a potato stuck behind the brake pedal for the inability to stop.

Nano Technology may make cleaning Toilets a thing of the Past (from /.) – Researchers from the University of New South Wales, Australia, are developing a coating that may make cleaning bathrooms less of a chore. The lead researchers, Professors Rose Amal and Michael Brungs of the ARC Centre for Functional Nanomaterials, are hoping to apply a tiny coating of titanium dioxide particles to keep the toilets clean. Currently titanium dioxide is being used on outdoor items like self-cleaning windows. Less cleaning I have to do, the cleaner my house will be!

Tab Mix Plus

I first saw this on Jeremy’s computer and thought it was really cool: Tab Mix Plus

It’s an extension for Firefox where it adds several nice features to the tabs. First, it places a close button on each tab. I don’t really use that much since I usually close tabs with CTRL+W. The cool thing is when a page is loading, you can see the status on each tab! And when there’s a tab that you haven’t visited since it loaded, the title with be in red italics.

There are several other cool things such as tab order when you hit CTRL+TAB. It works with the newest Firefox and even contains a session manager! One extra cool thing about it is it remembers your tab history and if you closed a tab by accident, you can always revive it.

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox’s tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager with crash recovery that can save and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows.

Added nl-NL locale, fixed 2 locale conflicts, fixed problem with uncloseable tabs in FF 1.0.7, other minor bug fixes

Requires: Firefox: 1.0 – 1.6a1 Firefox

Snow Tubing

I never did get to tell you how my Snow Tubing event went. It didn’t turn out as bad as I thought it would be. Playing in the snow is always fun (unless you saw my 5yr old video when a snow ball was thrown into my face). Haha. So yah… let’s end that story there. Anyway, it was quite tame. How it worked was there were about 10 seperate slopes blocked off from each other by a 3ft (?) wall of snow. You basically start at the top and slide straight down. Head first, feet first, on your belly, on your butt, on your back, they don’t really care.

When you’re at the bottom, you can clip your tube to this line tugging thing and it’ll pull you back up to the hill. There was a 5 minute line, so we decided to walk up the hill. Oh how wrong we were. By the time we got to the top, I had to take off my jacket because it was just too hot. It was very tiring walking up that hill, so yah, we used the line tugging thing every time afterwards. We also threw snowballs at each other on our way up. I realized how weak I was when my snowballs couldn’t get too far.

After a couple more dives, I decided it was time to stop. Plus there was free hot chocolate, apple cider, and coffee back at the lodge. There were also chests full of candy and trail mix and granola bars. Couple of us just chatted for awhile and waited for time to go. When Jeremey came in, he was totally soaked. Apparently he wasn’t really planning on coming, but a couple of people convinced him and Tekman to join us, and he went snow tubing in regular clothes.

The morale event used to be skiing, but someone got hurt really bad and was paralyzed for a year, so they changed it to a event with a smaller chance of injury like snow tubing.

You can check out the photos I took. It’s a pretty weak album, but I didn’t really want to damage my camera either. Although, I think it’s time for a new one. The new Canon’s have a much better LCD which I like, but I don’t want to switch to SD (Secure Digital). I still like CF (Compact Flash) a lot. There’s also 2 videos in the album, but it’s just me video it snowing, nothing too exciting.

Speakers on my chair

I got tired of not hearing my rear speakers unless the audio was really loud, so I decided to move them closer to me. I didn’t have speaker stands, so my only option was to ghetto rig it.

speakers on chair

What you see is my 2 rear speakers sitting on the end of my arm rests stuck to the side with double sided foam tape and a chain of rubberbands holding it down on the rest. I also attempted to stick the wires underneath my chair mat. This restricts my movement of the chair a bit, but since this is mostly carpet anyway, I don’t go crazy like when I have a chair with wheels on a hardwood floor. This does prevent me from spinning in circles, but that’s one priviledge I’m willing to give up.

Watching videos with 5.1 SRS (surround sound) is a totally new experience!
