Old Boy once again

Saw Old Boy once again today. This would make it my 3rd time. Great movie and an awesome psycho thriller. You can watch the trailer here. Watched it with StanMan, ChemChampion, and Joe (who joined us later). I won’t be reviewing the movie here, since this is a re-viewing, but StanMan was saying how this movie was similar to Saw. I can see how it can be similar, but Old Boy is on a totally different level in my opinion. Old Boy was more of a revenge thriller as he unravels his past to find out the truth, as Saw was more of what are the available options given the current situation you’re in.

The main plan of my visit to ChemChampion was to install his hard drive and dvd burner and reinstall Windows XP since his current computer is running on a fault drive. He returned the favor by treating me to Red Robin. I’m still so stuffed…

In terms of purchasing, it’s a woman’s world-study – Men defer to women when it comes to choosing movies, restaurants and television shows, according to the survey, set for release in the next two weeks. The data indicated that women also decide where to sit in a movie theatre, where to shop for food and which guests come to the family home. In fact, the only areas where men said they had any clout involved personal electronics purchases, the family car and setting household budgets. I’d have to agree. I hate making decisions on where to eat or what movie to see, WHEN I’m in a group. Guys are simple. If you leave it up to me to shop for food, I’d end up at Costco buying frozen pizza and hot wings. Veggies? Do we really need them? It’s also correct in stating that men choose their electronics and cars. I’d hear people’s recommendation, but I ultimately choose my own. Hooray for toys!

Man with 11-woman commune had stun gun? – Police found a stun gun and tear gas Friday at the Tokyo home of a man who said he persuaded 11 younger women to live with him by chanting a spell, media reports said. Police suspect he used the weapons to prevent the women, mainly in their 20s, from leaving, the reports said. An update on the man who claims he used an incantation to put the woman into a spell and fall in love with him. Could it be that he’s threatening the woman with the stun gun and secret agents?

Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000

I recently purchased the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 at the company store for $25. It’s selling at Amazon.com for $43. I originally got it because I wanted to check out the new laser technology that all new mouse is sporting and also wanted to see how wireless mouse have improved over the years. I’ve hated wireless mouse 5 years ago because the lag was just killing me. Here’s my review on it.

The mouse is based on Microsoft’s High Definition Technology which claims:

1000 DPI (dots per inch)
6000 FPS (frames per second)
85 MOPS (million operations per second)

The mouse has a good feel overall and is made ergonomically for right handed users. Before this mouse, I used the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical, which is also the mouse I use at work and back home in Monterey Park. That mouse sells for $22 on Amazon.com. It’s actually a great mouse and I’ve fallen in love with it multiple times and actually prefer it over many Logitech mice. But lets get back to this new mouse.

The new mouse has 5 buttons, just like my old one. but has the 2 extra buttons on the left side (for the thumb) instead of one on each side. I still haven’t decided if that is something desirable. I can see why they moved it to the left side. I had to use the side of my ring finger before to hit the right button, but one of the left buttons now require my thumb to stretch, which doesn’t really feel natural. The scroll wheel (middle click) introduces a new technology called tilt wheel, where the wheel can actually tilt left and right, allowing you to scroll left and right. Since I’m running my screen resolution at 1920×1200, horizontal scrolling is no issue, and it never really was to begin with anyway. The default software that comes with the mouse (IntelliPoint 5.4, though I’ve upgraded to 5.5) does not allow you to reprogram the tilt wheel which is surprise. I’ve contacted the mouse department regarding this and haven’t heard back yet.

The default buttons are also a bit weird. The back button is natural, but one of the thumb buttons turns on the magnifier which seems like a neat feature, but not something I’d use often enough to waste a whole button on. I’ve reprogrammed it to forward like my previous mouse. The middle click was also not defaulted to middle click, instead it was defaulted to Next Window, which seemed more like it was minimizing the current window and setting focus on the window immediately behind it.

The sensitivity is great! It took awhile to get used to, but I think my overall mouse movement has decreased with increased precision. I haven’t really tested the range yet, but my receiver is hidden behind a Kleenex box and is about 2ft from the mouse and the software has prompted me twice already that the signal is weak. It came with new energizer AA batteries, so I doubt it’s the batteries’ fault. Speaking of which, the mouse runs on 2 AA batteries, so it’ll be useful to stock up on some AA NiMH rechargable batteries. The website claims the batteries can last up to 6 months. I haven’t found a way to turn off the mouse yet, so I think it’s always pending and probably goes to sleep when there’s no activity. However, it wakes up rather quickly and I detect no delay after coming home and moving the mouse.

Since this was a laser mouse, I was expecting to also use like an laser pointer. But apparently the laser is invisible, meaning you don’t see anything coming out. I highly advise that you don’t look directly into the hole. The bottom of the mouse says: Class 1 Invisible Laser Product.

There IS one big fault about the mouse. The middle button is rather hard to click. It requires a lot more force than I’d expect and am used to. I’m thinking of switching to the Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000, basically the wired version of this mouse. Also sells for $25 at the company store, but Amazon.com is selling it for $37 after rebate. One of my neighboring colleagues uses it at work and it’s identical to the wireless in every way besides the cord and the fact that the middle click is a lot easier to use.

Chewing Straws

While I was biting straws the other day, I realized something. Chewing on straws is sort of like biting fingernails. Just to note, I hardly ever need to cut my fingernails. It’s not something I’m proud of and I even remember the horrible torture my younger brother went through when my parents forced him to stop biting nails. He truly had skill. He could bite the nails off every toe. I wonder if he could still do that today. But as you know, biting nails have long been associated with stress and I actually can see why. Try biting really hard right now, just forcing your teeth together. In a way, you’re exerting force or releasing stress through your jaws. Chewing gum might work, but gum is too soft in my opinion. Sometimes when I chew my nails, people would look over at me and ask what that crackling noise is. I usually just shrug away until they poke futher and ask what I’m eating. Haha. Straws aren’t has hard as fingernails, but they come awfully close. Hence, I think my chewing straw habbit is a way of relieving stress.

I’m apologize for not too many updates recently. You can blame Final Fantasy VII and just starting today 24 – Season 5. Well, mostly FF7. I think I’ve finally got all the characters including Vincent, Yuffie, and Cid. Right now I’m trying to find Yuffie because she stole all my materia. Unfortunately, I’m still on disc 1. I wonder how many hours I’ll be putting into this game.

As for 24 – Season 5, I just went through 4 episodes today and the beginning is great! Episode 5 is on it’s way and it’s actually quite nice to see it in HDTV format with 5.1 surround sound. Unfortunately the episodes are very large, almost twice the size if it was only stereo. I knew I shouldn’t have started to watch it before it completes, but it was just sitting there tempting me to watch it for the past few days. I finally caved.

Retrieving Windows Server 2003 Passwords

So I had installed Windows Server 2003 awhile back, but had forgotten my administrator password. I tried all the random configurations I could think of, but nothing worked. So being distraught, I knew for Windows XP, you could download a boot diskette or CD which could reset your administrator password. However, at that time, it didn’t work for Windows Server 2003. There are claims now that it works, but I haven’t hit that situation again yet and don’t really plan on to.

There were many other suggestions on another site: How can I gain access to a Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 computer if I forgot the administrator’s password? How can I reset the administrator’s password if I forgot it? But at that time, they didn’t have any suggestions for Windows Server 2003. It was pretty hopeless.

But I searched online some more and ended up on this website: Windows XP Login Recovery. They claim: Login Recovery is a service to reveal user names and recover passwords for Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and Longhorn. As long as you have physical access to the computer, your passwords can be recovered. By following three simple steps, over 98.5% of passwords can be recovered within less than ten minutes. This service does not overwrite passwords, it does not write anything to the hard drive, it does not alter the computer in any way. It simply reads the encrypted passwords for processing through our servers. I didn’t really believe them and if they could break it, I didn’t really want them to know my password either, but I had no choice because I didn’t want to reinstall the OS. I followed their directions and gave it a try.

There are 2 levels of service. My password was actually cracked within 5 minutes, but to get it that fast, I would have to pay £10. I opted for the free service which required waiting 48hours. And indeed it was able to crack my password within 5 minutes. I was shocked at how fast it could do it and could Windows Server 2003 security be that easy to break and when no other sites or software at that time were able to do it? Apparently, I had shifted my index finger one key to the left causing a typo on both the password and confirmation. But it’s fixed now and the password has changed, just in case.

So being curious, I sent a email to the Windows Server 2003 team asking them if they knew how this password retrieval worked and why is it so fast when it’s suppose to be secured. They directed me to this site: Project RainbowCrack. RainbowCrack is a general propose implementation of Philippe Oechslin’s faster time-memory trade-off technique. In short, the RainbowCrack tool is a hash cracker. A traditional brute force cracker try all possible plaintexts one by one in cracking time. It is time consuming to break complex password in this way. The idea of time-memory trade-off is to do all cracking time computation in advance and store the result in files so called “rainbow table”. It does take a long time to precompute the tables. But once the one time precomputation is finished, a time-memory trade-off cracker can be hundreds of times faster than a brute force cracker, with the help of precomputed tables. By having precomputed tables, they’re able to crack these passwords super fast just by making some simple comparisions to the user profile data you sent them.

I’m wondering if I should make a really obscure and long password and see if they could crack it.

Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Just watched Wallace & Gromit – Curse of the Were-Rabbit. IMDB users give it a rating of 8.1. You can watch the trailer here. I thought the movie was rather fun and enjoyable, much more than I expected. I’ve never watched Wallace and Gromit before, yet I wonder if all of their works is this interesting.

Database Problems

Sorry for the down time and several of you have notified me of the problem. Apparently, after a bit of debugging and troubleshooting, it turns out that my MySQL databases were linked through krunk007.com which is no longer registered. I had only gotten that domain because DreamHost provided a free domain registration. They’re currently holding a deal where you get $88 off your first year! Remember to use the coupon code: DREAM88. I told DreamHost that I didn’t want to continue the krunk007.com registration since it was only free the first year and I already had krunk4ever.com and krunk4ever.org under my belt. What I didn’t remember was both my blog and gallery pointed to the database in krunk007.com. The registration ended earlier this month, but took full effect sometime early this morning (before I slept), but it was going on and off. At first I thought it was just some server problems, but they responded to me that there’s nothing wrong with the server which my database is hosted on, I started debugging and noticed the domain issue. So now I’ve relinked the database using a current domain and things should be fine when the DNS starts to propagate.

So both my Blog and Gallery should be running in full power now. Please let me know if you do hit any more issues.

Fate/stay night Episodes 1-3

“Saving one person means not being able to save another.”

I’ve got to say, this has to be one of the best new animes released in awhile, probably on the scale of Bleach. You can visit the Fate/stay night official anime homepage or visit the original game site. Fate/stay night was originally an H-Game (click on link for definition). Like the other Type-Moon game, TsukiHime (月姫) was made into an anime. The animes themselves have no adult materia, but it was because the popularity of these games which gave a reason for these to be converted into anime series.

This series consists of fighting, comedy, and cute girls. Tons of cute girls. Though common elements in many animes, this one also consists of a pretty good start for a storyline. The story starts with a scene of battle 10 years ago. Along with that battle was a great fire. Many had died and there was this young boy who was rescued by ‘a magiciain’. This young boy was determined to be the protector of justice, even now when he’s a teenager. The man had adopted him and treated him like his own son. This man didn’t have any family, so Shirou Emiya was his only companion. He said something very powerful to Shirou one day (I’ve already mentioned it at the top of this entry): “Saving one person means not being able to save another.”

It fastforwards into the present time and you find a young teenager who had lost his foster father a few years ago. He lives along in a gigantic mansion, but a fellow female classmate comes and helps him make breakfast and dinner and tidy around the house. You could say they’re very close friends. There doesn’t seem to be any sexual tension between them “yet”. There’s also the teacher that always drops by to freeload. The teacher is actually the daughter of Shirou’s financial manager and before his father went away, he asked his financial manager to take care of Shirou. Shirou apparently had some magic in him too. He is able to see the composition of any material he touches as long as he can focus. With that he can also strengthen the composition or even alter it, making it a completely different material, somewhat like alchemy. I’m not sure what the basis of this magic is yet, but I don’t think this story will be explaining how magic works.

The story continues. There’s this girl rated prettiest in the school, but she’s cold toward every guy. She’s actually the 1st preset day character you see. She had summon a servant, hoping it to be of Saber class, but it turns out to be of Archer class. She was still satifisfied though, since Archer seemed strong.

So let me get into the Servant/Master business and what this little game is about. Every 10 years, a game starts again for the battle of the Holy Grail. The winner of this game is entitled to the Holy Grail which will grant whatever wish they may have. The Holy Grail chooses 7 Masters and these 7 Masters can each summon 1 Servant. Servants can be of different classes and so far in the anime, we’ve seen an Archer, a Lancer, and a Saber. There’s this new gigantic monster which will probably be introduced in the next episode. I’m guessing Summoner, but I can be wrong. The game is to be the last person in the game. The Masters can lose in 2 ways, either get killed or have his Servant killed. Of course the former is the easier route and when Servants lose their Masters, they can choose take another Master’s sides.

So, let’s continue the story. Shirou always likes to help out people, even when people are taking advantage of him. He doesn’t really care. So one night, he was asked to help clean the dojo, while his friend went shopping with some girls. He didn’t mind and made a the dojo really clean. When he walked out, Rin, the Master of Archer was battling the Servant Lancer. Archer apparently can also weild 2 swords, though I have yet to see him use an arrow yet. Guess he wasn’t meant for close battle. Actually I have seen him use an arrow, but that was during the promotion video which I’ve posted. Shirou couldn’t believe what’s happening in front of his eyes. There’s been several homocides recently and the weapon matches that of Lancer’s. Lancer notices Shirou and suddenly stops fighting and makes it his priority to kill Shirou. Shirou runs away, but ultimately gets stabbed in the heart and dies. Weird as it may sound, Rin, the prettiest girl at school, actually has something for Shirou. At first, she was going to see the student as a casualty of the war, but when she found out it was Shirou, she wasted a jewel to resurrect him. According to the rules, any outsider who sees any event of this battle must be killed and Lancer even made it a priority to stop Shirou and leaving the current fight.

However, Lancer finds out Shirou’s not dead yet and comes back to kill him. Shirou tries to defend, but gets his ass whooped. Right when he was about to get killed, he somehow summoned Saber. SABER IS SO CUTE!!! I posted an chibi drawing of her a few days ago. But anyway, she pushes Lancer back and even has the upperhand during the battle. She uses an invisible sword, though it’s not really explained that well what she uses. At first I thought she was using her aura to fight. Lancer busts out his ultimate move (or maybe just one of his special moves) where the lance actually follows the movement of the heart and tries to stab it. Luckily Saber was able to dodge it, but it still got her in her shoulder. Lancer says his Master is a coward and said if his ultimate move failed, he was suppose to return immediately. Saber was about to chase, but Shirou told her to stop.

A little more info regarding the Servants. The Servants are actually hereos and warriors of the past and present and is chosen by the Holy Grail and materialized in today’s world. The Servants can be in 2 modes: hidden or materialized where normal human beings can see them. They can only fight when they’re materialized, but can still provide magic and support when they’re a spirit.

Saber notices another Master and Servant in the area. Rin and Archer had come to see Shirou. Rin wanted to make sure he was okay. Archer wanted to make sure he was dead. But anyway, Saber starts attacking them and right before Saber is about to kill Rin, Shirou stops her again. Saber says she must kill the enemy. Shirou as you can imagine is very confused at this point. He doesn’t even know what the game or fight or battle is about. So Rin tells him about the things and magic and jists of what it was about and then takes him to the supervisor of the game and he gives a more detailed explanation. I’ve already provided the explanations along this summary.

The 3rd episode ends where Shirou and Saber actually meet the next Master and Servant. Actually, Shirou’s already met her once and she warned Shirou that he’s needs to summon his Servant soon or else it’d be too late. This series is getting exciting!

Show/Hide functionality

I’ve added a new functionality to my website, and that’s something I’ve been meaning to add since I had Spoilers. For example:

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be going back and editing every spoiler to insert that functionality.

I did also add it to the links on the side so I can hide a bunch of stuff by default. Enjoy!

Here’s how to do it if you’re interested:

First, you’ll need the javascript code that’ll show and hide the blocks:

What this chunk of code does is it’ll either hide or unhide the element that it finds by the ID you pass in by checking to see if it’s currently hidden or not. If it’s hidden, it’ll unhide it. If it’s being shown, it’ll hide it. There’s also different section of code where it finds the element which has a specific ID based on the ID you passed in, which I’ll explain later. What it does is change the text to “Show” or “Hide” depending on if it’s hidden anymore.

For any element you want to hide with this toggle function, you just need to give it a UID (unique ID). For example:

Afterwards, you’ll just need to construction a link to do the toggle. You’ll also need to give this link a UID based on the UID of the block you want to toggle. Here’s the code:

Notice how the link id is toggleTestTog and the block id is toggleTest. For my code you need to append the Tog to the UID of the block id for it to be able to know what text to change.

If you want to have the item hidden by default, you just need to update code of the item to have a style attribute of display:none:

Here’s the example of the code already hidden. I changed the id to toggleTest2 since it needs to be unique. I also changed the link text from Hide to Show since it’s hidden by default:

I did try to find if I knew the elementID of the object that called me, but I wasn’t able to find much info. If you know how a javascript function can figure out the object/element that called it, please do let me know. Just leave me a short message in the comments section.
