寶貝計畫 (Rob-B-Hood)

So I watched this movie expecting Jackie Chan to play a modern day Robin Hood, steal money from the rich and distribute it to the poor. But it was completely not that. Jackie Chan and a couple other people play a group of thieves with a conscience, until one of their jobs requires kidnapping a kid and the whole story goes crazy from there.

Canadian man on trial for putting baby in freezerA Canadian man who could not figure out how to deal with his girlfriend’s feverish 10-month-old daughter put the baby into a freezer to cool her down, a local newspaper reported on Friday. Funny thing was I read this article yesterday and when I watched the movie and saw him placed the kid in the fridge, it totally reminded me of this.

Of course, with every Jackie Chan movie, there’s bloopers (WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS). I won’t say it’s my favorite part of any of his movies, but it’s something I look forward to. His bloopers generally contain well when bloopers of when people forget their lines, stunt mishaps, and interesting ways to “solve” problems. This blooper wasn’t really as funny as his other ones, but there was one blooper that made it all better. They were trying to get the baby to suck Jackie’s nipple, and the baby wouldn’t do it, so he said, “Add more honey.” I did notice that Jackie Chan doesn’t spring right back up after an accident anymore. A clear sign that he is getting old.

They’re so adorable and delicious looking. I can see myself biting into them. If a plushy isn’t an animal, are we still allowed to call it stuffed animals?

Random Crap:

There’s this new free song on iTunes Music Store: Rodrigo y Gabriela – Tamacun. It really sounds nice. It reminds me of Mexican folk songs and the guitar strumming is really soothing. It’s been playing on repeat for 16x already. Though it has kept me wondering why the the album cover has an image of a dinosaur eye.

Transformers Movie Character Designs, Images and Toy Prototypes (from Digg) – I’ve got to say, I’m impressed. I wonder how the movie will turn out.

Black Friday Commotion – Insane Shoppers Rush To Door – after Black Friday a few years back (with UngsungHero), I’ve sworn never to do Black Friday shopping again, unless it was online. The above video shows you what I hate the most. Speaking of which, a couple you probably tried the Amazon.com $100 Xbox 360 promotion. I slept right through that. ;p

How To Bypass The Zune’s WiFi Sharing DRM (from Digg) – Interesting idea, but this probably would only work for songs that aren’t already DRMed under your user account. By renaming a file’s extension and sending it across as an image file, no DRM is attached to it. They also had another interesting hack for the Zune: How To Use The Zune as a Hard Drive, which was one of the things I regret the Zune actually disabled. Now, with a hack to re-enable this, it might actually be reasonable.

Balls of Steel – Negs Urban Sports – Big Stranger Rodeo 2005 (from CMDCC) – a British TV show similar to Trigger Happy TV, where they play pranks (sometimes quite mean) to random people. One recurring theme is called: Neg’s Urban Sports. This one is about a new sport called Big Stranger Rodeo, where you jump onto the back of a stranger and like the bull riding machines, the longer you can stay on their backs, the higher score you get. They also had one called Urban Sprinting, where you set off the alarm of a shopping store and run from the security guards. You win when you reach a burger joint (i.e. McDonalds). The show is called Balls of Steel. They also have another recurring theme called Annoying Devil.

Wow! It looks and feels like Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s a game developed on Java and works quite well actually. Though I wish the buttons could be configurable, but I can’t really complain.

You Can Pick Your Doctor, and You Can Pick Your Nose… (from Digg) – There is an Austrian doctor who has gained notoriety by advocating the picking of one’s nose and the consumption of the resulting bounty, particularly in children. Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, a lung specialist working in Innsbruck, would have us believe that people who pick their noses with their fingers are healthier, happier, and more in tune with their bodies. His argument stems from the notion that exposing the body to the dried germ corpses helps to reinforce the immune system. The good doctor feels that society should adopt a new approach to nose-picking, and encourage children to take up the habit. That’s so cool! Maybe that’s why I don’t get sick that often. Mmmmm, crunchy!

“As God Is My Witness, I Thought Turkeys Could Fly” (from Digg) – An advertising stunt dreamed up by a local Cincinnati radio station went terribly wrong when twenty live turkeys plummeted to their deaths after being dropped out of a helicopter under the misguided assumption that they would all just fly away. Bad Man Plays Emulators On His Wii (from Digg) – Nintendo won’t be happy about this. It looks like a combination of the Action Replay with the software program SDload and the official Nintendo SD card adapter will let very bad people with no morals whatsoever enjoy emulators such as SNES9x on their Wiis. Disgusting! Don’t you villians know what the Virtual Console is for? Interesting…

The 25 Funniest Analogies (Collected by High School English Teachers) (from Digg) – I have to share these “funniest analogies” with you. They came in an e-mail from my sister. She got them from a cousin, who got them from a friend, who got them from… so they are circulating around. My apologies if you have already seen them. Here are the ones I found very funny:

  • She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
  • He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
  • The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t.
  • Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
  • The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
  • Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.
  • The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.
  • The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

Panda poop paper yields big profitsWhen keepers of the country’s panda couple — Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui — got tired of disposing the 55 pounds of feces daily produced by the duo, Prasertsak Buntragulpoontawee came up with the idea of turning it all into notebooks, fans, bookmarks and key chains. … But the multicolored paper products have proved hot selling-items at the zoo, with the 300,000 baht (US $8,200) earned to date helping balance the accounts of panda keeping. Neat!

Thanksgiving

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving went well. I celebrated this Thanksgiving over at Saran’s place, a friend I met through Stanman. Met a bunch of new and interesting people. Similar to last year, it was pot-luck style. I brought ice cream, cookies, and pumpkin pie. The main entrees were turkey, roast beef, and ham. There were mashed potatoes, corn, cranberries, yam, and your typical Thanksgiving food. Did you know that sweet potato and yam are not the same thing? According to Sweet Potato and Yam Differences, Generally sweeter than than the sweet potato, this tuber can grow over seven feet in length. … Yams contain more natural sugar than sweet potatoes and have a higher moisture content. I have no idea what I’ve eaten since I was a kid anymore… Then there was a bunch of the other food like chicken wings, Thai delicacies, some yummy soup, and two different cakes (I wasn’t sure what was what, but the words chocolate, cheesecake and pumpkin was involved).

For entertainment, I had brought over my Xbox 360 and we played some Dead or Alive 4, Small Arms, Big Bumpin’, and Table Tennis.

Small Arms is a new Xbox Live Arcade game that came out a few days ago. Costs 800 points (~$10). It’s similar to Smash Brothers where you can have multiple fighters in a side scrolling arena (sometimes moving) and you try to defeat the other opponents. You’re allowed to use pick up any weapon you want, but you’re created with a default weapon. Weapons have an allotted amount of ammo and when you run out, you can either get batteries to recharge it or or find a new weapon to use. They also have a concept of aim in this game which allows you to move and aim at the same time, which can get rather difficult to do. We were also playing on a small TV (27″ non-HD) and it got rather hard to see who or where I was. It’s much better on my 24″ LCD. It comes default with 12 characters (4 locked) and several maps to play in. They’ll probably release more characters/map later which they’ll probably charge for. All in all, it’s a fun little game, but I don’t see it rivaling Super Smash Bros anytime yet.

Big Bump’ was a big shocker. It was very well liked and for a $4 game, it’s already gotten its worth. Although somewhat hard to control, being able to play 4 player hockey in bumper cars was indeed quite fun.

Table Tennis was also created some rivalry. Art became the Ping Pong champion in no time, despite being his first time playing and many players were frustrated they couldn’t beat Art, not even once. Suddenly after awhile, Tom decides to challenge Art again. All of us were rooting for Tom, the underdog. Tom won the 1st game 11-6 and Art demands a rematch. The next game went into deuce and the score ended with 12-10 with Art winning. The final match (best out of 3) ended with Tom Winning with triple deuce, 14-12. It was quite an exciting event. All of us were cheering for Tom.

All this time, Saran and Art were poking at Stanman for not being able to get the Wii. He was suppose to get the Wii on launch day and have it for the Thanksgiving party, but unfortunately, it was sold out everywhere. Of course, I didn’t find out about this till the day before, or I could’ve told him where to get it. He apparently tried again today (Black Friday), but I haven’t heard back if he got it yet. Maybe he’s too busy playing already.

Then we had a game of Settlers. There were 11 people, with 6 newbies so Stanman suggested we break up into teams and teach and play at the same time. The game went well (for us at least). This is my 1st time winning against this group, and I would have to say it was due to Brite’s luck (my partner – I hope I got his name correct). He even managed to pick a victory point from the pile.

The day ended with just a bunch of us idling around and chatting. Once again, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Bluetooth

So I spent hours yesterday trying to figure out which bluetooth adapter I had. The shell of my adapter was broken, so all I have is a PCB board stuck to a USB connector. Suddenly I remember the bluetooth software I used was something called Widcomm (which apparently is now purchased by Broadcomm), but they didn’t have any drivers/software available to be downloaded. So I searched for Widcomm software and tried a whole bunch and none of the worked.

A couple hours later (I was watching Numb3rs in the meantime – interesting show), I figured out I had a TRENDNet, but I forgot the model number, but BTW-101 or BTW-102 sounded familiar and both had one that looked like mine. Inside both of those models, were different variations. Unfortunately, I didn’t heed the “please reboot this machine” advice and wasted another few hours on it. Drivers weren’t getting installed; software wouldn’t load; software having scripting problems; software couldn’t find the bluetooth adapter; etc.

The reasoning I didn’t want to reboot was I was watching Numb3rs through my Xbox 360 (new TV shows and movies are now LIVE and available to be downloaded and rented through Xbox Live Marketplace) and the audio goes through my soundcard and when my computer reboots, there’s this 30 second gap where no audio comes out.

Also, I had no idea which model/version my adapter was. Finally, I remember there was a backup/system restore point with the driver .inf file. I did a quick diff and found the matching version. Did an uninstall, reboot, and re-install, and now it all works beautifully. I had gotten a new bluetooth adapter from FifthUnit.com called JAGGA, but the software that came with it didn’t have syncing capabilities, a really bummer, and I didn’t have a chance to reinstall the old bluetooth adapter till now. Well, what really prompted me to do it was the fact that Saran called me and his number was in my Outlook contacts list, but not on my cell phone yet. I didn’t want to enter his name manually and went through all this trouble to get my bluetooth syncing to work again.

What’s interesting is that I realized, each bluetooth adapter has their own software for connecting and synching, and there’s no central software for bluetooth on Windows XP. If there is, not many manufacturers are using it.

Turkeys try to catch train out of N.J.Some wild turkeys, it appears, were trying to get out of New Jersey before Thanksgiving Day. The line travels to Suffern, N.Y.

PlateWire is not meant to be a substitute for legal reporting of traffic infractions, if you are a witness to a traffic infraction please contact your local authorities and file the appropriate complaint or report. Interesting idea, though I’m not sure if I would want to claim a license plate number…

The 19 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Death (from Digg) – Some interesting ones I liked:

  • After being decapitated, the average person remains conscious for an additional 15-20 seconds. Talk about a way to go.
  • Speaking of preventing hauntings, yet another old wives tale led to the institution of burial wreaths. It was believed that the wreath would encircle the spirit of the dead person, thereby preventing them from returning from the grave.
  • One of the main reasons cowboys carried pistols in the 1800’s was to avoid being dragged to death by their horse. You think they could have just gotten bigger stirrups. – at first, I thought they’d shoot themselves. Then it occurred to me, the could just shoot the horse.
  • The last words spoken by Union General John Sedgewick were, “They (the Confederate soldiers) couldn’t hit an elephant from this dis…”
  • If someone plans to jump off Mount Everest to commit suicide, you’ll need a lot of patience. It takes the average person 2.5 minutes to hit bottom. And we don’t want to know who timed it.
  • Might want to read the labels a little more carefully. Nearly 2,500 lefties are killed every year using products meant for righties. Who knew? Now, just back away from those right-handed scissors. – ahh, the evil plan the right handers have stirred up.
  • Apparently, they really are virtually destructible. A cockroach can reportedly live up to 9 days without its head. The only reason they finally kick over? Starvation.

Eye Checkup

Recently, my eyes have been getting tired (recently referring to my vacation). It generally happens when I’m in the middle of playing Kameo. So I decided to make my eye checkup appointment this week, something I’ve been planning to do for months now, but never really got around to it.

I called on Monday and they told me they had an opening on Tuesday morning at 9:30am. Usually I’d decline and schedule in the afternoon, but this being Thanksgiving week, I decided to just suck it up and wake up really early Tuesday morning. I didn’t go to sleep till 5am the night before, so when my alarm clock went off at 8:30am, I didn’t want to get out of bed, but eventually did. I have been recommended to Overlake Eye Designs by some friends at work and Dr. Tony Wong was really neat. We were chatting and talking about work and school and it turned out be from Berkeley too! We then talked about our game against USC this past weekend (horrible lost) and if I ever went to get my eyes checked at the optometry center in Berkeley.

So he did the normal stuff (actually her receptionist did a bunch) including puffing air into my eye, taking pictures of my cornea, checking my peripheral vision, see what I could read, checking out how my eye responds to light, etc, etc. So then I brought up the fact that my eyes were recently getting really tired quickly. I had mention I was playing games for a few hours and he said that he noticed the bottom of my eyes were rather dry and believes that it may be due to extended periods of not blinking or incomplete blinks. This usually happens in front of a computer or when you’re reading a book. My eyes never really felt tire when I use the computer, so I guess I must be concentrating really hard when I play games. Anyways, he suggested that I take breaks during my gaming sessions and also to use eye drops to lubricate my eye. He suggested something called Refresh Tears. He also mentioned that when playing 3D games, our body may become imbalance as our eye and ear coordination aren’t working as they normally do. This is something I refer to as 3D motion sickness, which I’ve had since I played Jedi Knight (the 1st one) for 10+ hours straight, so I tend to not play fast motion FPS.

Turns out my left eye has no change, but my right eye has almost a 20° shift. The doctor suggested that I get new glasses as it would be better for my eyes as the right eye would be straining at the moment to see clearer. He also suggested that I get anti-glare (which allows 100% of the light to go through instead of 80% which non-anti-glare glasses do). When I went to Costco this afternoon, I dropped by the Optical center to check out glasses. Our insurance provides up to $180 for eyeglasses (single lens), so I looked around and found a pair of frames that I liked. Including the lens and anti-reflective treatment, it came out to only $127.97. Costco is just way too cool.

However, looking at the receipt, that got me wondering, is there a difference between anti-glare and anti-reflective? According to TSP’s Anti-Glare vs. Anti-Reflective :

Anti-Glare deals with external sources of reflection off a surface – like bright sunlight or high ambient lighting conditions – and its impact on the readability of the image or information you are trying to read.

Unlike diffusion-based anti-glare solutions, Anti-Reflection considers all sources, both internal and external, that accumulate to reduce the light transmitted through the display window, thereby reducing the readability of the viewed image or information.

Though, I’m still not sure which is better.

Anyways, I then dropped by my local supermarket to pick up some eye drops and I couldn’t believe how expensive eye drops were! A tiny bottle for $10! Next time when I cry, I’ll store it up in a container so I can resell it later, which reminds me a whole slew of RPGs which has “tears of (fill in magical name)”. Didn’t Lord of the Rings also have tears of something?

Oh yah, does anyone know how often I’m suppose to be using eye drops? Cause the box doesn’t really mention any instructions/usage.

Stupid Alarm System

My alarm system has been going funky for the past week. After moving in, I didn’t bother subscribing to the alarm service since I don’t really have much valuables in my house, so I just left it alone.

Initially, it started to beep about a month ago saying that my phone line was disconnected, which is true since I only use VoIP and cell phone now, so my phone lines around the house aren’t wired up and I don’t see a need for it to be. I have 2 #s, both going through my Linksys PAP2 and 2 Panasonic 5.8GHz phones sitting on my office desk.

But that beeping only went off once, so I didn’t bother with it. The LED lights were still blinking like crazy, but I only pass by the alarm system twice a day, so I didn’t mind it.

Recently, it’s been going bonkers, goes beeping for hours. Then when I jam every button on the panel, it stops for about a day and starts beeping again. When I check the status, apparently 2 other items are having problems, but I noticed that the alarm system is also connected to the smoke detectors, so who knows what item 9-4 and 9-5 is. The booklet left behind by the previous owner didn’t mention anything. I had opened the alarm panel and remove the batteries, but it continued beeping. It appears there’s a secondary power somewhere else.

Annoyed, I finally called the alarm company today and asked them how to disable it. Apparently all they needed to know was the previous owner’s name and the address. He told me besides the batteries, there should be a power outlet nearby with a cube (2″ by 3″) that powers it (the batteries are just backup). I looked around and didn’t see an outlet and thought if that was all that was needed to disable the alarm system, it seemed rather stupid. Though I will give them that it took me forever to take out the batteries. At first I thought it was such a stupid design, taking me 10 minutes to take out 6 batteries. Second time only took me close to 1 minute. But now that I think about it it, that just might give the system enough time to phone home.

So I started looking around and found a power adapter similar to what he was saying in my garage. I unplugged it and the panel went off.

So I’ve been enjoying the quietness of my house once again (minus my computer music blasting).

Nielsen study: video use on iPods very lowThe demand for video-playing capabilities on digital music players may be overblown, according to a study conducted by Nielsen Media Research. Nielsen conducted its first ever study on iPod usage in October this year, following the habits of 400 iPod users from October 1-27 as part of its Anywhere Anytime Media Measurement initiative. Its conclusion was that a surprisingly low percentage of iPod users seem to have any interest in watching videos on their devices. I’ve always wondered who would watch videos on such a tiny screen. Then again, I never really found portable DVD players that useful either. Minimum screen size I would need to enjoy a video would probably be around 10-12″. Then there’s cell phones which try to have everything. I don’t need my cell phone to be a digital camera and a mp3 player and a video recorder. Though I will agree the “good” digital camera on a cell phone is useful once in awhile when I want to take a picture of something in that moment, but don’t have my digital camera on me. I guess a video recorder would be nice when I saw some police officers tasering a student at the library.

slate green challenge: Help the planet. (from Digg) – For the next eight weeks, Slate, in collaboration with eco-Web site treehugger, invites you to consider your own individual contribution to global warming—and challenges you to go on a carbon diet. The goal is to reduce the amount of CO2 that you put into the atmosphere by 20 percent. If you’re a carbon glutton who doesn’t bother to turn off the lights when you leave the house, you may find this diet pretty painless. Even if you spend $10 a day at Taco Bell, that’ll still buy you 3.5 years. What is interesting is inside the press release: The party exchanging the PlayStation 3 is solely responsible for payment of all taxes, income and otherwise, and should consult with his/her tax adviser. Considering this being like lottery money, income, or short term gain, we’re talking Uncle Sam taking 20-30% of it. Then, on June 6, he was assassinated – apparently by a lone gunman. But Shane O’Sullivan says he has evidence implicating three CIA agents in the murder Interesting theory and interesting read.

Ohio lottery picks match Ohio game scoreOhio State’s 42-39 victory over Michigan also was lucky for players of the Ohio Lottery. Shortly after Saturday’s game ended, the numbers 4-2-3-9 were drawn for the Pick 4 game. For Buckeye fans, this weekend would’ve been a blast for you. For Cal fans, we didn’t fare too well, although we leading or tied till the end of the 3rd quarter, but USC creamed us in the 4th quarter.

Fishy freckle remover inflames Chinese consumersChina has banned TV ads for a freckle remover, touted as being so good it could remove spots from fish, when it not only killed fish but led to rashes, blisters and skin inflammation on the humans who tried it. Advertisements promoting “Magic Freckle Removing Gel”, produced by a Shanghai company, used a celebrity, bogus experts and fish to endorse the cosmetic, but fish exposed to the gel by a research institute later died from poisoning, the Beijing News said. … Experts later found that three different fish had been used in the advertisement to make the cleanser appear effective, the paper said. Article wasn’t that interesting, but I was curious who watched that advertisement really thought the gel would actually remove spots from a fish…

What are we becoming? (from Digg) – On CNN’s the situation room, Jack Cafferty struck a somber tone after the House passed legislation that includes a war crimes immunity clause. He rightfully asks, “what are we becoming?” video and transcript info can be downloaded at Crooks and Liars. Do note that the video is dated 9/28/2006 as he wanted to get the bill passed before the Democrats came in after November’s election. I really like this quote: At least President Nixon had Gerald Ford to do its dirty work. President Bush is trying to pardon himself. It appears that the bill got passed by both the House and the Senate, but it’s unclear if it’s been signed yet. I found a bit more info here: “Bush Pardons Himself”: Detainee Legislation Provides Retroactive Immunity for Bush Adminstration War Crimes

European Cities Do Away with Traffic SignsAre streets without traffic signs conceivable? Seven cities and regions in Europe are giving it a try — with good results. … European traffic planners are dreaming of streets free of rules and directives. They want drivers and pedestrians to interact in a free and humane way, as brethren — by means of friendly gestures, nods of the head and eye contact, without the harassment of prohibitions, restrictions and warning signs. Haha, interesting experiment. I’m curious as to who’s right/wrong when an accident occurs.

Slow motion high FPS compilation (from RayAlome) – a really neat video of showing how fast actions look in slow motion. My favorite ones were with the water balloons where they popped it on someone’s head and when they punched it.

Things in a Microwave (from Digg) – A device capable of producing 700 watts of invisible radiation, and the Wonton Way. Not a good combination. Unfortunately for the free world, the Wonton Way has acquired a microwave. Here’s the results. Ah.. the experiments I only dreamed of doing, but too afraid it’ll blow up. Although we did try the egg thing (thanks to Decathanerd’s and Cari’s microwave). It does in fact blow up. Ours actually blew open on microwave door, rotated the microwave about 1/2 a foot, and splattered egg all over the kitchen. Coincidentally at my ship party, one of my colleague’s wife was commenting on how guys find fire so interesting (I was playing with the candles if you didn’t guess it yet). She was saying how her boss put in a cdrom into the microwave and started it and the cd made a bunch of sparks and asked her how cool it was. She didn’t find it particularly cool, but I would’ve been amazed! Boys will be boys.

Burger King releases Xbox 360 games

It’s been awhile since I ate at Burger King. The last time being during my drive down this summer to Mt. Shasta with CDMCC and before that was probably years ago. Anyway, Burger King is doing a promotion where they’re selling 3 exclusive Xbox 360 games for $3.99 with your order. They even have a BK Gamer website up.

There are 3 games available:

You can watch the trailers of each individual game on their website. The games are actually not half bad, and for $3.99, it’s well worth the money (unless you’re not a ‘gamer’ as my fellow *cough* doesn’t believe in games because they don’t involve money). The game I got was Big Bumpin’, which was actually what I was wanted first. My 2nd choice would’ve been Pocketbike Racer. Big Bumpin’ is sorta like a very weak version of Mario Party, where you go drive around a bumper car and do fun things like blow up other people, play hockey, push people off edges, etc.

I would have to say this was brilliant marketing as it actually got me into a Burger King. I haven’t visited McDonald’s in ages either. The only fast food restaurants that I actually like are Carl’s Jr. and Jack in the Box.

Clerks II

Just watched this movie today. Worthy to be called the sequel, but not as great as the first one. Then again, I guess my expectation of Kevin Smith has always been somewhat high after watching his first few movies.

You Me and Dupree

Saw this movie today. Wasn’t expecting much and I found it funny and enjoyable. The main actress Kate Hudson is also pretty.
