Another one of those feel good movies, where you know the ending only a few minutes after you start watching. Though what makes this type of movie good is not how the story ends, but how it progresses. In one sentence, the movie is about an old man journeying to the other end of the world trying see how fast his motorcycle named Indian can go. I was curious why they chose Anthony Hopkins to play an Indian. Haha.

Official Site
IMDb: 8.1/10 (1,491 votes)
Yahoo! An old man who’s into speed modifies his own motorcycle to get the most efficiency. This included making his own pistons and shaving off the treads off his wheel, so when they got into high speeds, they wouldn’t expand and touch the side of the motorcycle.

His life long dream was to go to some place near Salt Lake City in Utah, where they hold Speed Week once a year at Bonneville Speedway. This man has never left New Zealand and he’s like 60 years old and already living off his pension/retirement funds. After some encouragement from his friends and taking a loan out on his house to provide enough funds for the journey, he’s off on his way from New Zealand to Salt Lake City.

To conserve money, he travels by boat and arrives a few weeks later. He also gets to ride for free as he takes the role of chef on board.

There is one interesting thing repeated several times over the movie, and his stance against smoking. Not exactly too sure why that was added.

When he first arrives in the port of Long Beach, he asks the cab driver to take him to Hollywood. He was unacustomed with high fees and costs of living and though the cab driver was joking when he told him the fare. Next thing he needed was a car, so he finds a cheap car dealership nearby and bargains his way through. He even helps the car dealership fix some cars. In turn, he got to use their workshop and build him a carrying thingy for his motorcycle.

However, driving in LA is different from New Zealand, as we drive in opposite directions and this took him awhile to get used to.

So he meets interesting people along the way. I’m not going to go into it, but they were a few fun scenes to get to know him better.

When he finally arrives at Bonneville Speedway, it turns out he can’t race because he didn’t preregister. Also, he motorcycle was at least 30-40 years old and didn’t follow the latest safety regulations. There were fractions in his tire and they were missing all the treads. He also didn’t have a safety suit to prevent injury. However, he made a few friends and there were some pity points of him coming all the way from New Zealand. The officials finally relented and gave him a test run to see how he did and he proved that he could handle himself.

Apparently there used to be (or maybe there still is) a stretch of road between Utah and Nevada didn’t have any speed limit as he sped by an officer at 150 – 160 MPH.

The movie ended with him breaking the land speed record and reaching > 200MPH. In the concluding text, it stated he came back the subsequent years and broke his own records and till today, he still holds onto a record or 2 for certain sized engines/vehicles.

One thing that struck me as strange was the fact that the movie would use the term MPH (miles per hour) instead of km/h (kilometers per hour), because Burt’s from New Zealand and even in New Zealand, he was talking about how fast his motorcycle could go in MPH units. I’ve confirmed with Tera (a friend living in Australia) and the Speed Limits New Zealand, that they do in fact use km/h and not MPH. Just found that interesting. Maybe all racers like to talk in MPH instead of km/h, though wouldn’t saying speeds in km/h make you sound faster? I’m driving at 100km/h instead vs I’m driving at 60mi/h.

Watched this movie a week ago.
