Christmas Vacation

Don’t think I got a chance to say it earlier, but HAPPY NEW YEAR!

My Christmas vacation comes to an end tomorrow when I head back to Seattle. It’s been a fun 2 weeks. Spent most of my time sleeping and eating and relaxing. Didn’t really get anything that interesting for Christmas, but I did get myself a TomTom GO 700 Portable GPS Navigation during the American Express My Wishlist promotion for $300 (with a potential $100 rebate). It’s pretty neat, though I find myself using that screen to drive instead of looking out the windshield when I was playing with it. It has that 3D mode and it feels like I’m driving in a video game. Other stuff I got included some gift cards, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, some new clothing, and this really cool dragon puzzle thingy (picture to come later).

I also hung out with a bunch of friends during this vacation. SueOn and I went Christmas shopping the day after Christmas at the Citadel and the place wasn’t as crazy as I would’ve imagined. Then again, we went around 11am, so maybe all the good deals that were supposed to happened at 7am was already over.

Speaking of shopping, I went to Fry’s for the 3rd time to purchase a wireless bridge. My uncle’s setup needed a bridge to connect his Slingbox with wireless router. Searching on Fry’s.com for “bridge” resulted quite a few available wireless bridges, however I was shocked that they didn’t have any bridges available in the retail store. The closest thing they carried were wireless print servers. By default, most wireless routers don’t come with client/bridge mode. I didn’t really have time for something to be shipped, so I was contemplating if it was better to go with Ethernet through power outlets or a wireless print server. Both were $100. I ended up getting the wireless print server (Netgear WGPS606) as it had a whole bunch of extra features. I’m still shocked they didn’t carry a simple wireless bridge in the largest electronic store.

Anyway, back to meeting with friends. I met up with Ungsunghero and chilled at his new place and had dinner. It’s been a year since I’ve seen him and it was really fun catching up.

Then Decathanerd, Cari and I took a 3 day trip up to north California. Our initial intention was to visit Mechy, but he apparently had a “vague” memory of trying to booking tickets to fly home on Sunday, but ended up getting tickets for Monday because Sunday was full. It was a shame since I haven’t seen Mechy in quite a long time and was hoping to see him again this trip. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and saw tons of cool fishes and stuff. Decathanerd was testing out his new Nikon 10MP digicam which took some really nice pictures. My pictures will be uploaded shortly (probably when I get back, since my upload speed here sucks). We also met up with some friends and played on Cari’s new Nintendo Wii. It was really fun. Now if I can just find a deal… We visited Berkeley on our last day to check out the new buildings. Unfortunately we visited Berkeley on New Year’s Eve and due to our unfortunate luck, every place we wanted to go to was close (i.e. Student store, Sweet Hearts, gellato place, Quickly, Yogurt Park).

We got back around 10ish and I met up with some Mark Keppel friends to break into the new year. JoeHK, DNG, Kyle, Glendia, LilSneezy, MMouse, Vvorivi, Ohfuee, Norybic and I all counted down and cheered with apple cider, though some had theirs spiked. We went to Garden Cafe afterwards and just chilled and chatted. We went back to Glendia’s place afterwards and basically gossiped about everything. Glendia even busted out the year book and we went through it telling stories of things I never knew.

The day after, SueOn came back from Minnesota and he tried to get a group of people to have dinner with me, but it being last minute and all, not too many people made it. Though the food at Tofu House (Korean BBQ) was really good.

Afterwards, I met up with Ohfuee, CDPlayer, and Decathanerd and we went bowling. I was rather pathetic (probably since I haven’t bowled in such a long time), I got 68 followed by 58 or something like that. It was rather disappointing. We went over to ABC Cafe and chilled till they told us that we needed to move our car and that’s when we realized it was 3am already.

I did have to apologize to GwaGwasan and LilPebbly because they had called me the previous day asking if they could come over and give me some snowballs they had made, and I ‘promised’ I called back when I got home. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do so since I came back at 3am and had totally forgotten about this the next morning. They decided to call me again and I felt really bad for having not called back. They dropped by around 10 today and gave me these cookies (called snowballs apparently) which were really good. It was like cookies with pecan nuts covered with powered sugar. Yummmm. We chatted for quite a bit and it was nice to see them again.

All in all, my break’s been great. Too bad I have to go back. 🙂

ATX 12V

So my computer has been rebooting automatically for quite some time. Usually it occurred when it’s playing a video, so I thought either the graphics card or the drivers for it were problematic, but even after upgrading the drivers and switching in a working nVidia GeForce MX420, the system still rebooted by itself.

I then slowly unplugged one thing after another, finally literally leaving just the RAM, CPU and motherboard and the boot drive. I had ran memtest for over 6 hours with no problems found. I even did a full scan disk and no bad sectors were found. I started to think I have a faulty motherboard or cpu. Although the symptoms I’ve been seeing looked really familiar to what happens when the motherboard detects a system is overheating. However, looking at the temperatures in the BIOS showed that everything was pretty normal, even immediately after a reboot.

The motherboard manual had recommended a 300W power supply and it seemed fine with mye 350W PSU, but I even installed a new SuperFlower 450W PSU and the problem was still there.

So the new motherboard I got was a ECS P4M800PRO-M V2.0 which had a power connector I have never seen before. Instead of 20 pins, it had 24 pins. I thought that was odd and started reading through the manual and it turns out that although there’s a 24 pin power connector port, it said can support either 20 or 24pin power connectors. According to my research, ATX refers to the 20 pin power connector and ATX 12V refers to the 24 pin power connector. Many power supplies has what is known as the 20+4 pin power connector which supports both ATX and ATX 12V, which basically means it has a detachable 4 pin on the power connector.

When I had tried to search online in regards to problems with this motherboard, there were many threads saying this motherboard was problematic with 20 pin power connectors. So I decided to get a 24 pin power supply to see if that’ll help. I dropped by Fry’s and started looking at their power supplies. The parking lot was quite a mess. It was the day after Christmas sale and I had to wait 4x at the traffic light before I even got into their parking lot. You know it’s crazy when they have Fry’s people at the entrance directing traffic and forcing you to loop around the back. Still wasn’t as bad as the Black Friday sale I went to a few years back.

However, it appears that most people were there to return stuff. The checkout line was actually only half filled. The other day when I went there to pick up my cpu/motherboard combo, the parking lot was half filled, but the checkout line was completely packed.

I was going to drop $75 on this Antec SmartPower 2.0 450W Power Supply, but ended up picking up a Ultra V Series 500W Power Supply for $60 instead. To my surprise, there was a $40 rebate on top of it, making it only $20 after rebate. However, it appears that their online website has it for FREE after rebate, but I don’t really have much time left around here so, $20 for the convenience was worth it.

After installing this new power supply, my computer hasn’t rebooted by itself yet, and things seem to be normal. Let’s hope I didn’t jinx it and it continues to run w/o any problems.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all!

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and hopefully got all the presents they had wished for.

Speaking of which, I just got this link from Digg: Lenovo – ThinkPad X60 Tablet and this new tablet has some pretty neat features over the previous X41 tablet:

  • MultiView/MultiTouch indoor/outdoor viewable touch screen
  • High resolution SXGA+ screen
  • 802.11n MIMO WiFi
  • Embedded WWAN
  • Mobile docking solution

*DROOLS* The SXGA+ screen (1400×1050) is awesome! It’s an optional feature, but if I got the X60 Tablet, I would definitely get this screen. The default is XGA (1024×768) which has been what all the X series (12.1″ screen) has always touted, however 1024×768 is a bit lacking. Everything else on my X31 rocks. I just wish the screen had a better resolution. I’ve even sent in customer feedback asking for a better screen. Bill actually told me a month back that the new Thinkpad tablet was getting a better screen, but when I searched, i wasn’t able to find any information on their website, so I thought it was just a fluke he saw.

The additional wireless networking features seem nifty, but I’m not really that interested until it becomes more standardized.

The multi-touch screen is also nifty. Most tablets require you use a metallic stylus pen to work where the screen has a magnet system behind it to detect where the stylus pen is. It’s not a true touch screen. With this multi-touch functionality, it allows you to use you fingers or whatever other funky object you prefer to use to interact with the screen:

lenovo thinkpad x60 tablet - multitouch screen

I do have to say I was a bit disappointed. When I first read multi-touch, I had thought it was referring to something like the Multi-Touch Interaction Research by Jeff Han. But I guess it’s still neat that you can now interact with your fingers.

I had tried to customize the X60 Tablet, but unfortunately the SXGA+ screen doesn’t seem to be an available option at this moment. I wonder how much that’ll add to the price given the fact that with a regular XGA screen, it’s already over $1,800.

I really wish they’d put this better screen into the regular X-series as I don’t really care for a tablet much.

Things a Man Should Know: About Fatherhood (from Digg) – a rather funny list of things dad’s should know about parenthood. Here’s a couple I thought were insightful or funny:

  • Your child, at birth, already has a deeply complicated relationship with his mother, and, for the first year, you are only a curiosity. For a couple of years after that, an amusement-park ride. Then, a referee. And finally, a bank.
  • Reason boys are better: They cannot get pregnant.
  • The first time you change your son’s diaper and he pees all over you is not an accident. It’s foreshadowing.
  • Let them take reasonable risks: A few scrapes in the long run are nothing compared with the scars left by hovering parents. Or tics. In preparation for risks: a Red Cross first-aid course.
  • It never hurts to videotape the baby-sitter. Especially if she’s hot.
  • Overalls are not only cute, they provide a convenient handle.
  • Dropping food on the floor is a new and delightful skill to a one-year-old, not a deliberate attempt to annoy you. However, as small he or she might be, never underestimate an infant’s ability to project chewed food over great distances.
  • Beware your child’s uncles, who will teach your kid dirty words, introduce him to liquor, and give him gifts of drums, archery sets, and possibly matches.
  • It is, of course, your natural right to exert the above negative influences on your siblings’ offspring.
  • Lock or no, please knock before entering, as the disruption of a youth who is spanking his monkey will be twice as traumatic for you as it is for him.
  • Unfortunately, those books that say motherhood makes women desire more sex are referring to women who are not your wife.
  • If the real response to his question is no, try this instead: “Go ask your mom.”

Computer Trouble

So my MPK computer which acts as a file server, printer server, and the main hub I connect into to diagnose problems on computers within this home network, died a few months back. I had asked my sister to do a bunch of test but was unable to determine the cause.

I come back and the whole machine is dead. When I tried booting it up, it was in a constant state of reboot. I don’t even get to see the first screen. I kept removing parts to see what the cause was and finally got down to just the motherboard (now outside of the case), the CPU, the video card, the RAM, and the PSU.

I had tested the PSU on a different machine earlier and it turned out fine, so that was off the list. I then tried swapping graphics card with the ‘spare’ machine (spare being that my brother hasn’t come home yet, so I could take apart his computer if I wanted to) and the graphics card was fine. I did the same with the RAM.

What was left was the CPU and motherboard. I had tried reseating the CPU and reapplying thermal paste to it, but that didn’t seem to help. I thought if I was going to replace either the CPU or motherboard, I might as well go to Fry’s and get a combo. Which I did and ended up getting this:

outpost cpu motherboard combo

I wasn’t looking for something fast or fancy, but this was the cheapest combo they had advertised and I didn’t feel like waiting for a better deal. I was also out of the air duster cans so I picked up a few. There was a TON of dust in my case.

Turns out the machine’s actually quite decent. With just the onboard video (VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP) using 64MB shared from 512MB of 333MHz DDR RAM, I was able to play 1080p trailers off Apple.com on Quicktime really smoothly. The CPU that came with this combo was a Pentium D 2.8GHz.

Another reason I picked this combo was because it supported both DDR and DDR2 RAM and since my existing DDR RAM was working, I didn’t feel like splurging to get better RAM as this machine as I said is just a server that doesn’t do much. It also had an AGP slot (although I found out later it had onboard video, which couldn’t be worse than my GeForce MX400 that was in there).

Anyway, installing the CPU was rather interesting. The socket form was something neat and it actually took me half a minute to figure out how to unlatch the CPU lever. The retail fan that came with the CPU was enormous! Though I have to say, it’s pretty quiet. Then I noticed the motherboard had a longer power connector port. I was like, when did PSUs get a longer adapter?!?! At first I was like shoot, got to go back to Fry’s and get another PSU, but it turns out that these new motherboards support BOTH the 20pin and the 24pin power connectors. You just have to leave 4 pins exposed.

The machine booted up fine and I went ahead to repair Windows. Didn’t exactly work. I had hoped not to have to do a full reinstall, but it doesn’t look good. It blue screened when trying to get into Windows and immediately reboots. I then installed XP over the existing OS, but I was getting random faults occuring in random programs and sometimes the machine would just reboot on its own. I finally gave up and did a format and clean install.

I should’ve heeded to my own advice a long time ago about installing OSes only on fresh harddrives. Guess I wanted to take the lazy way out and ended up doing a lot more work.

But it turns out there was actually some memory problem. Doing a memtest resulted in tons of errors. The Crucial 512MB 333MHz by itself ran fine. The Kingston 256MB 266MHz in a seperate machine ran fine too. I’ve concluded that either the 2nd slot on the motherboard is bad, the motherboard didn’t like me mixing 333MHz with 266MHz (although it fell back to 266MHz) or 266MHz was too slow for the CPU.

Anyway, I’m reinstalling the OS for the 4th time with just the 512MB stick in it. It’s really 448MB since 64MB is reserved for the onboard video card.

How to disable AIM Expressions and Others’ Themes

Ever had someone IM you and a weird side bar comes up? Welp, I didn’t used to care about it since only 3 or 4 people I knew used it and I didn’t chat with them often. Since I’ve been home, I’ve been working on fixing my computer (story to come later). So I’ve been using my laptop in the meantime. I have AIM Pro installed on my laptop since I didn’t like the new AIM Triton client they had available at that time when I installed.

Due to ununusal circumstances where rdpclip.exe wasn’t behaving correctly and using 99% of my cpu power and the clipboard sharing busted, I’ve been using AIM to send text between my laptop and my machine back home and whenever I IM myself, I got this ugly sidebar on my AIM 5.5 client.

Anyway, Cari tells me the same thing so I try to see if there’s a way to disable this theme or “expression” as AIM calls it. I wasn’t able to find out how to disable it from my side, but apparently AIM has an option to disable displaying expressions/themes from other people.

Once you enter the Preferences dialog (F3), goto ‘AIM Expressions’ on the left and look for the area marked “Incoming Expressions”. By default this is ‘unchecked’, but that doesn’t mean that setting reflects what is saved. I had to actually check that box, save that setting by clicking Apply, and uncheck that box and save the settings again before the AIM sidebar thingy disappeared.

I wonder if they fixed this in the later clients.

Playing MIDI in Winamp Lite

RayAlome and I were talking about Winamp and he said they should release a lite version without the video player. I said they did and pointed him to Winamp Player – Free Download. I said the only real drawback of Winamp Lite is it doesn’t play MIDI files. I guess it’s really no longer much of a deal for me, but I was big into MIDIs back during high school as I thought it was neat to have songs in such a small format. Plus the fact that old cell phone ring tones could play only MIDI.

But it turns out that all you have to do to get Winamp to play MIDI is to have someone with the full version to give you the MIDI plugin. Neat!

You can download in_midi.dll (which I’ve zipped up): in_midi.zip

Afterwards, just dump the file into “C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins” or wherever your Winamp installation directory is and start Winamp and associate the MIDI files with it.

Power is BACK!

I think I jinxed myself during the previous entry when I said I was “lucky”. My power went out exactly at 1:41am Thursday night due to the high winds probably knocking over some electric poles or damaging a transformer. I sat around waiting for the power to come back up, assuming it was an intermitten thing. I didn’t for 15 minutes, and my machine was about to hibernate when the UPS said there was 5 minutes left. I did find out that a 24″ LCD uses A LOT of power. Without my Dell 24″ FPW2405 LCD, I have about 25-30 minutes of backup time on the machine. With the LCD plugged in, it drops to 10-12 minutes.

Anyway, I went to bed early that night (before 2am) and set my cell phone to wake me up at 9:30, because I had a one on one at 10:30. Anyway, I woke up around 9 and the power was still out. The reason I woke up was probably a little of the chill + the fact I went to bed early. My car was in the garage so I thought I’d sleep a bit more and hope the power would come back on in those few hours.

I woke up at 2:30pm and the power was still out. I looked around my house. There wasn’t anything to do. I did have my laptop with 2 hours of battery life, but without the internet, there wasn’t much to do. I decided to go to work and see what’s up, hoping they at least have power. So I unlatched my garage. The unlatching was easy, just pull and tug. Lifting the garage didn’t require much strength either. It was trying to figure out how to relatch the garage doors that took a very long time. In the end, I just left it unlatched and locked the door between my garage and my house (this will come back later to haunt me).

The trip to work actually didn’t take that long. Despite all the traffic lights not working, I took 156th up and got to the office building in 25 minutes. I did see horrendous traffic going the other way. The freeways were calm, but the entrances were packed.

It was surreal. It was like dooms day or Armageddon where cities of people are without electricity. I don’t think Seattle was affected, though I haven’t confirmed yet, but many of the east side cities’ (Bellevue, Redmond, Bothell, Kirkland, etc) power grid were all affected. I believe even the airport had to be closed down for awhile (not sure for how long). The funny thing is with all these cars, all the gasoline stations were not running. If you wanted gas, you had to literally drive up to 40 miles away. Thank god my little Civic has good mileage.

Anyway, back to my story. I ended up at my office building and it was totally empty. I didn’t even bother stopping and drove away. Apparently as it turns out, there was an e-mail at 5 or 6am telling all Puget Sound area employees that there won’t be work, but unfortunately for me, I didn’t have email access. At this point I could go home and be bored to death, or I can drop by someone’s place. Derek became the lucky guy I dropped by, plus the fact I had a present for him. Took me about an hour to get from building 40 to 90 freeway. All the main roads were backed up (due to no traffic lights), so I tried some back road, but both Northrup (20th ave) and W Lake Sammamish were closed due to tree fallings. These were trees that were at least 2-3ft in diameter. So I ended up taking 148th ave all the way down and 3 blocks before the freeway entrance literally took 30 minutes (10 minutes / block; maybe more).

Once I got on the freeway, it was nice. Actually about halfway getting onto the freeway, the traffic lights turned on, but it didn’t really help much. I thought, maybe I’d have power back at my place, but decided I’d give it some more time. The remainder of the drive wasn’t bad at all. Traffic lights were not working, but traffic still moved at a fairly good pace. I got to Derek’s place and I think they got home not too long ago. They invited me in and they had many many candles lit. They also had a gas powered stove so that meant they could actually cook. I was actually planning to have cereal and milk since all my cooking equipment required electricity. We made hot cocoa with marshmallows and just sat around chatting next to the fireplace.

I had called Xyon earlier that day and apparently he got electricity back at 6am. Tekman apparently got his electricity back sometime in the afternoon too. Derek gave Tekman a call and he invited us over for pasta and games and to check out his new Sony 1080p projector. We also brought our cell phones and laptops to be charged. Wrexen had his Xbox 360 set up and playing Gears of Wars when we got there and it’s so pretty! We also got to see some other HD content and it’s really nice *drools*… Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting my TV this Christmas as the prices are still somewhat too high. Actually, if Costco had delivery or if the selections on Costco.com was more abundant, I would’ve dropped my 2k awhile back. We played some poker, some board games, and had this awesome Baked Ziti with Italian sausage that Angel made and these yummy garlic bread. Afterwards, Derek and I played a few rounds of Mario Kart – Double Dash.

On our way back, the Microsoft campus seems to be powered. Even that stretch of freeway had the lamps on. I was hoping we’d have power, but neither Derek nor I got power when we got home.

I got home a little after 1am and sat around playing with my fireplace. My fireplace turns out to have fake wood which I thought was real when I moved in. I’ve been following a particular pattern where I only screw up one room: my computer room. I guess I screw up the kitchen too, but I clean that up daily. The living room and the dining room are usually never touched. The fireplace is in the living room. The upstairs are only used for sleeping and showering, but having the temperature drop to 50°F made me decide to try out my fireplace. At first I thought I had to buy new wood every time it gets used up, but it appears that these wood don’t actually catch on fire. It also doesn’t really warm up the room either, guess it’s all going out the chimney. The glass pane in front of the fireplace does get hot, but I only get warm standing right next too it. Oh yah, it turns out I had hot water too. My heat furnace didn’t turn on, though Derek explained to me that was because the fan that pushes the hot air is probably electric. Interestingly enough, even though my thermostat said “Heat On” because it fell below my set temperature of 55°F, the furnace was smart enough to not turn on because there’s no electricity. I was worry when I opened my door into my garage, it would smell of natural gas (or whatever the substance they use to give it that smell).

I went to bed and woke up this morning and found out it was 45°F and I was freezing. Took a nice hot shower and gave Derek a call. I was heading into work to use the internet there, since I assumed the power was back. I took the long way (520 freeway) to get to work to avoid the unpowered traffic lights, however it took me just as long to exit the freeway than the entire freeway trip itself. When I got to building 40, I was once again disappointed. The power hadn’t been restored for that building, so I met up with Derek and we went around searching for a gasoline station that didn’t have a 45min wait. We drove around Bellevue for half an hour or so, trying to find gas stations, and to be honest, I saw more of Bellevue today then I have ever with my whole year here combined. We actually found Bellevue H.S. which was on the top of this hill! We actually ended up all the way in Bothell and still couldn’t find a gas station that had gas. We ended up picking up Tekman in his PJs and he took us to an Arco which was also packed with cars, but at least it didn’t wrap around the entire block (which the Chevron in Bellevue did). That totally reminded me of the comics and pictures of when the middle east stopped shipping oil to us and people waited for hours in line to get gasoline.

Afterwards, Derek, Shanna and I had dinner at Boneyard Fishbone Bonefish Grill and it was yummy. They had a ballet to catch. Apparently when they told me they were going into the city for the ballet, and had to dress nice, and Derek needed to shower and shave, I thought Ballet was either a club or a restaurant. Turns out ballet referred to the Nutcracker ballet. We parted our ways and I drove home to test my luck.

As I was driving home, the street lamps were all on. I was crossing my finger the whole way. About 5 minutes to my house, a street lamp was off and I was like ‘boo’. Then the following street lamp was on and I was like ‘yay’. The street lamps continued to be on until 2 BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE!?!?! And then it was total darkness. I felt like kicking something. On the other hand, I was hoping they’d be close to fixing my place.

I got home, turned on the heater, pushed my couch close to the fireplace, started paying music from my iPod Nano through my Shure E4C-n, and began writing this blog entry. 2 paragraphs in, I get bored and started playing Free Cell.

After a couple games, that’s when I looked out the window and saw the mail kiosk and was like, did I pick up mail today? Then it hits me, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE KIOSK!!! The light was on. I turn around and look towards my computer room, the lamp was on and so was my computer!!! Yippee!!! The power came back on at 7:04pm exactly (looked at my alarm clock and saw how much time has passed since it was powered). 12 minutes had actually passed before I noticed it. First thing I do? I log into my computer, sign on AIM, and announce it to the world. Well, really just 2 people, but yay!

So this is me being stupid. Since the power was back on, the first thing… well, the second thing that came into my head was to fix the garage. I had told Derek about my garage door situation, and he tells me that the garage will latch back onto the “traveler” (as the manual calls it) when you open the garage door your next time. Of course that required power, so I wasn’t able to fix it till now. The garage doors snapped back in just like Derek said they would. I was like awesome, turned around and tried to open the door. MY JAW DROPS.

As I mentioned how locking the door into the garage would haunt me later, the door was locked! I felt my pockets, NOTHING. At least I was dressed warmly with a sweater. I tried the door again. No luck. I wondered if I was smart enough to hide a spare key somewhere. No go. I even checked my car’s glove box and underneath all the paint cans. I went around to the front door and was hoping I’d been stupid enough to leave that unlock (which sometimes I do), but nope, I was smart this time. I jumped onto my back balcony and tried the sliding door. Nope, also looked. I walked around my house several times and thought really hardly. Looks like I need a locksmith. Derek mentioned he knew how to pick locks, but he’s probably still in the middle of Nutcrackers and a door was between me and my computer.

At this time, my neighbor (one of the two that helped me with my car in the snow situation and one that I also baked cookies for) was working on fixing his garage door. I walked over to say hi and I helped him with his garage door. Then I told him my story. Unfortunately he was not a locksmith, nor knew any. I asked if I could borrow his phone to call, and he was kind enough to let me into his house and and we Googled for locksmiths in Bellevue, WA. Pretty much picked the first one and called and he said he could be here in 20-30 minutes. I was like sweet. I was actually contemplating on calling multiple locksmiths to quote their prices, but given that this was an emergency plus the fact that I’m borrowing my neighbors phone and house, I decided to not bother. If I had my cell phone and a phone book, I would’ve definitely done some shopping. Do remember, this was a Saturday night. I met his wife and mother-in-law earlier (gave cookies to the mom and bumped into the wife when I was confirming the blackout), but I met their cute little daughter for the first time. They let me stay in their house while we waited for the locksmith, watched some Finding Nemo and even gave me a cookie (dunkers).

The locksmith showed up and apparently, and I thanked my kind neighbors and went out to meet him. He asked if I had any ID, but I told him it was in the house. He asked if anyone could confirm that I lived here and I said my neighbors could. I asked if he wanted me to ask them to come out, and he goes well, I did see you walk out of there, so that’s fine. He said deadbolts are practically impossible to unlock, so he tried the door in my garage. He said these types of locks usually takes 15 seconds (or was it 3 seconds?) for him to unlock, but there’s a pin that he couldn’t pick. He then tried some other tools which include a flat sheet of metal and a bent screw driver and he wiggled it for a good 5 minutes and then asked me if I was sure there wasn’t any other lock on this door. I confirmed and he said, “Don’t worry, there hasn’t been a door I have been unable to unlock. Worse case scenario, I bring out the drill.” I was like okay… I can always break a window and get back into my house too… Of course I thought that in my head. He then busted out with these air pouches and used the flat metal and wiggled it some more and the door finally busted open. I had to bring down my driver’s license and a credit card statement (since my driver’s license doesn’t reflect this address) and to confirm I do live here. He was actually quite thorough. Initially, I just brought down and packing slip from one of my internet orders, but he said he needed to see a credit card statement or a utility bill so I went back up to search for one. Since most of my statements were online only, it took a few minutes for me to actually one one.

I went back down with my Capital One statement (apparently they don’t think my email address exists and keeps sending me statements with a note that tells me emails they’re sending are being rejected). But that’s another story for anther day. I go back down, he confirms I live here and tells me he’ll give me a discount since I’m paying in cash. $120 for the work and $55 for the service call. I knew I was going to pay and $175 was actually near the higher end of my estimate, but oh well, emergency is emergency. Thank god I had gone to the ATM before coming home. I was down to $1 and all my banks around here were closed (no electricity). After dinner at Bonefish Grill, there was actually a Bank of America in that same mall and I withdrew $300 and I was even thinking, how long $300 was going to last me. Welp, over half is gone now. Haha. $175 for a lesson. I need to figure out where to hide a spare key now. I’m actually thinking of dropping it off at my neighbors, but I’m not sure if they’ll feel comfortable with it.

I’m finally back in my house and then I remember… THE FRIDGE! I opened the fridge for the 1st time since the blackout and was surprised there wasn’t any smell. As a warning for those with ice cube makers, apparently there are holes and water was starting to freeze everywhere. There was even a puddle at the bottom. I thought the ice was going to keep the freezer cold, but it made a bigger mess than I had anticipated. And being trapped outside for 45 mins meant it had 45 mins of trying to get frozen. I threw away pot-stickers which were gooey and my frozen bbq wings, which I think was okay, but I didn’t want to deal with it. I kept the mushroom risotto and the asparagus risotto. I actually had to get up and walk over to the fridge to figure out what the name of that green veggie that Ryan likes was. I knew it began with an ‘a’ and it was on the tip of my tongue, but I finally gave up and walked over. The vanilla ice cream was also all gooey. I also threw away my eggs (I think they actually started to change in color) and my pumpkin pie which looked funky and some veggies that have been there for weeks. I’m actually keeping the milk as it tastes fine and smells fine.

I did bake my last 3 cookies and made one jumble cookie:
jumbo chocolate chip cookie

And that’s been the chaos for the past 2 days.

Happy Birthday Mechy!

Just wanted to wish Happy Birthday to Mechy, since he no longer signs onto AIM.

I “was” going to make this a random crap post, but then I noticed it was past 5am already, so it looks like just a short post today.

Lsiymle sent me this cute animation called The Sky-colored Seed:

the sky-colored seed
Large Video (640×480)

the sky-colored seed
Small Video (320×240)

Speaking of which, I noticed many online video players have gotten fancy recently, then I noticed:

wmp11

and then I realized it was because I upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 recently (WMP11). I believe I never even bothered to download 10 and was running WMP9. Well, with WMP11, apparently I can talk to my Xbox 360 without download the Xbox Media Connect software which needs administrator access and needs to be run as a service, which I didn’t particularly like. So I decided to upgrade to WMP11 and see how it works. I haven’t tested it yet, but will let you know when I do. I don’t use WMP11 anyways. There’s always Media Player Classic and VLC and they basically cover everything I need. Of course you’ll need the “plug-ins” like Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative.

I’ve got to say though, the new player looks a lot better than the old one. Much sleeker.

Oh yah, the Japanese phrase that appears above the green pig(s) (are they even pigs?) says:
みんなの中に、私はいます。 –> I am inside everyone.

Not really sure what it’s trying to say, but I’m guessing seeing how the pigs are coming out of his snout/mouth, I’m guessing it’s pretty literal.

The phrase underneath the green pig says:
40th 日本テレビ –> 40th Japanese TV

Guess this animation was done for the 40th anniversary for this TV station.

Glow-in-the-Dark Mushrooms

I just got my glow-in-the-dark mushrooms today from Dirty Microbe. They call it “Tokyo luminous mushrooms” as the mushrooms themselves don’t really glow, but the other sand-line pebbles around it do. However, it’s still so awesome!!!

glow-in-the-dark mushroomsglow-in-the-dark mushrooms

Here’s an image from their website:

Both mushrooms I got had green bumps on them. Would’ve been nice if they gave me a red one too, but seeing how these were out of stock for quite some time, I’m not complaining.

For those interested in purchasing from their site, they sent me a card:

saving money is good.
use this code on your next order!

FREE SHIPPING!
DISCOUNT_B7

Shipping without the code is still just $1.99, but a $2 savings is $2 I can buy more toys like these glow-in-the-dark mushrooms.

They’re also have a t-shirt sale where any t-shirt is $12. They has some funny and some cute designs.

Fake Luigi invades Japanese Wii launch (from Deadlock) – this blog entry wasn’t that interesting, but while watching the video, I saw the girl in the picture below:

ps3 vs wii
(from Tera – taken from 4chan)

Though it’s not definitive, but you get an idea of who plays the PS3 and who plays the Wii. If you want a cute attractive girl to come to your place, you get the Wii. If you want… well… you get the story.

City dunks cookie-scented ad campaignCity officials ordered CBS Outdoor, the company that holds the advertising contract for its bus shelters, to remove the adhesive strips Tuesday, just one day after they were put up as part of a “Got Milk?” campaign. … Some critics expressed concern over potential allergic reactions. Others complained the ads could be offensive to the poor and homeless who can’t afford to buy sweet treats. Interesting why no one bothered to ask if the poor and homeless were offended by it. Don’t you love it how people just love making decisions for those that are not as well off as they are?

Scary ‘Mary Poppins’ Trailer (from Digg) – I recut the Disney classic to make it seem like a horror movie, entitled SCARY MARY. Haha! Another awesome parody trailer. Reminds me of the parody Shining trailer. Then again, I’ve never watched Mary Poppins.

War on Drugs Expands to Catnip (from MS newsgroup) –

While catnip does not have the same effect on human beings, the advocates of banning catnip have pointed out that children who give their cats catnip and then see the cat being “happy” might get dangerous ideas about getting high. They think, if the cat can feel good, why not them too? Indeed, the first step to marijuana addiction may well be catnip! According to the drug warriors, catnip has been a major gateway to the human abuse of drugs, and yet there has been no prohibition.

“Catnip is a much greater drug problem than most people realize,” said Ima Tyrant in a recently televised interview. “Some teenagers have experimented with smoking catnip. People also make tea from catnip, and have used it in folk medicines. We can no longer tolerate this big loophole in drug abuse. The prohibition of catnip will the “cat-stone” to America’s War on Drugs.

Haha! A hilarious article and has the same funny taste as The Onion.

What code DOESN’T do in real life (that it does in the movies) (from Digg) – Following up our article: Top 20 Hackers in Film History and Vibrant’s Top 10 Servers in the movies, I felt obligated to dispel some of the notions about programming that these movies endorse. I understand that Hollywood needs to dress things up to make them more entertaining, but in the case of programmers, code, and hackers they’ve done more than dress things up – they’ve morphed a little stuffed teddy bear into a cybernetic polar bear covered in christmas lights and phosphorescent hieroglyphics with a fog machine pumping rainbow smoke out of his ass. In other words, they’ve layered a ridiculous amount of extravagance on top of something that in reality is very grounded. Haha! Reminds me that the same rules applies to anime, where physics are re-defined. Though I think Xyon would disagree completely on this: People who write code use mice

Xbox 360 Versus PlayStation 3 Graphics Comparison (from Digg) – We expected the PlayStation 3 to ship with several games that first appeared on the Xbox 360, similar to how the Xbox 360 had a lot of Xbox ports at launch. And the PS3 did indeed arrive with a good number of games that originally shipped for the Xbox 360. This gave us the perfect opportunity to compare the graphics on both systems with several cross-platform games. You’d think that the PS3 versions would be exactly the same or slightly superior to the Xbox 360 versions, since many of these games appeared on the 360 months ago, but it seems like developers didn’t use the extra time to polish up the graphics for the PS3. We found that the Xbox 360 actually had better graphics in the majority of the games we compared. The games compared are: NFS Carbon, COD3, Madden, Marvel, NBA 2K7, Fight Night, Tony Hawk, Tiger Woods.
