Death Note

So I mentioned I finished reading the manga a few days ago. The ending was good and throughout the storyline, it was fun following their deductions and investigative skills.

As I mentioned before:

The premise of the story is every Death God (死神 – shinigami) has a notebook. In traditional stories (at least in Chinese folk tales), this is a notebook of the list of all living people, when they’ll die, and how they’ll die. The twist in this story is that this notebook is in fact blank, and Death Gods can write who’s ever name they want and how they die. Somehow a boy named Raito (ライと – Light), a teenage geinus, gets ahold of one of these notebooks and learns about its mysterious power. Raito uses the notebook for justice, killing off criminals. However, these unexpected deaths have raised suspicion in the police and investigation agencies around the world. A world class detective named L (also a teenager like Raito) tries to locate the person everyone on the internet has been calling Kira (キラ) and now it’s the battle between 2 geniuses. Cardo scala-500

So I received my Cardo scala-500 this Friday and finally got a chance to play with it yesterday. It’s far from being the best bluetooth headset out there, but for $10 after rebate, I wasn’t going to complain:

B$: Cardo scala-500 Bluetooth Headset $9.99 AR
SD: BACK !!! – Cardo Scala-500 Bluetooth Headset for $9.99 shipped AR

cardo scala-500

So the package was decent and the headset is pretty tiny. Besides the ear piece and the AC adapter (to charge), it also comes with booth a ear loop and eyeglasses clip (haven’t figure out how to use the clip yet) to hold the bluetooth ear piece in place. It also comes with a belt clip and neck strap depending on how you like to carry it around. Personally, I got this bluetooth headset as a toy and not something I plan to use daily. In fact I don’t really plan on using it with my cell phone much as I don’t really like talking on the phone. One thing about the ear loop I wished was to make it adjustable, meaning bendable to any shape I want. Currently it’s a big loose and if I’m moving my head a lot, it sways a bit.

The quality is decent. On the headset there’s a volume control and an button. I don’t really like the steps needed to turn it on and off as it requires holding the volume control down until it changes colors. The range is decent. I was able to get clear audio and no static up to about 15ft and could still hear myself around 30ft. I do only have a class 2 bluetooth adapter so that might be why. The product description says it has 9 hours of talk time per charge and a week of stand-by. Also it takes about 2-3 hours to get it fully charged and it’s recommended you let it charge for 4 hours intially.

Connecting it to either my cell phone or computer was pretty easy. The default code is 0000 and it just connects. Both my computer and cell phone recognized it was a headset and treated it as so. There is a weird thing after turning on the headset and it autoconnects to the PC, the incoming audio would all be static, however, I can hear fine. I would then have to reconnect it initiating from the PC side and then all is well.

Another reason why I wanted to get a bluetooth headset is to try out SkypeOut. I’ve made a few calls so far and they’ve been rather clear. I do get some distortion some time, but not because of my bandwidth, but I think it’s because of my CPU being over utilized (i.e. trying to load all the pictures for Window Live Local on my 24″ LCD).

All in all, I’m happy with my new $10 gadget.

If you’re looking for a cheap bluetooth headset to play way, this week BestBuy is selling the Nokia Wireless Headset for Bluetooth-Enabled Phones (Model: BH-200) for $10 out the door. Currently it’s backordered online, but should still be available for pickup in most stores. If not, get a raincheck.

National High School Rankings

So now that I’m looking for a house, I’ve also been checking out school rankings (since the same house in Monterey Park or San Gabriel would be worth a lot more in Arcadia or San Marino). I just can’t believe there’s so many top ranking schools in Bellevue. It’s actually pretty shocking.

I’ve posted the 2004 rankings last year in May, but it appears there’s an updated 2005 list out now.

The pages are always hard to go through, so I made Excel spreadsheets of all 3 years:
2003 List – The Top High Schools
2004 The Complete List of the 1,000 Top U.S. Schools
2005 The Complete List of the 1,000 Top U.S. Schools

How the score is determined is by this formula:
Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2004 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Obviously that formula can be better, but it does a decent job I think. I also went through an interesting website (from my Buying Agent): The Seattle Times: School Guide, which lists all the public schools in the greater Seattle area and tells what percent graduated, what their average SAT score is, how many took the AP tests, how many passed, how many went to a 4 year college, how many went to a 2 year college, etc. I wonder if there’s a site similar to this for LA.

Here’s the few interesting ones I picked out.

Windows Movie Maker

So I learnt a new trick with Windows Movie Maker today. To a beginner, the application may seem easy to use, but when you’re trying do advance customizations on it, it’s horrible.

Things I don’t like about it:

  • The only way to create clips of long videos is by using the beginning and endng trim lines. What they need is to be able to enter start time and end time for this. Also the trim lines jumps in increments determined by the program so by default it hops every 5 seconds giving you even less control of where you want it to end
  • Only 2 default aspect ratios. 4:3 or 16:9. If you’re video is not one of those ratios, then it stretches one of the dimensions.
  • During save, it doesn’t explicitly allow you to set the resolution nor bitrate. Instead you have the option of choosing the max size or going through a list of video settings that’ll choose the size for you.

Things I like about it:

  • Really easy to use
  • Everything’s pretty much drag and drop
  • Allows you to set a max size to determine the best bitrate. Good when video servers cap you at a certain file size (YouTube: 100MB / PutFile: 25MB)
  • Works with almost all video files. (there were a few that I had problems with)
  • Creates .wmv files that plays in any Windows Media Player

I did have another problem with it before was that trying to move the begin and end trim lines was an arduous process. On the bottom of the screen, there’s a time line that by default shows about 3 minutes worth of clip and you can scroll until you hit the end. If I had a 60 minute clip before, I would have to move the begin trim line 3 minutes in, scroll, and repeat the process. I didn’t find a easy way to zoom in or out of the time line, until I accidentally found out how to do it today.

Apparently, by holding down CTRL and using your scroll wheel (CTRL + SCROLL WHEEL), you can zoom in and out of the time line like you would in a picture. Now I can zoom out so far that the entire timeline fits on one screen and then move the trim lines from there. Afterwards, I would zoom in to both trim lines, so the increments/decrements will be small and I could be more precise on when to exactly start and stop. Still not as great as being able to enter the stard and end time, but way better than what I had before.

So I went ahead and made these clips where I took screenshots of and posted in one of my previous entries: Favorite Detective Conan moments:

Detective Conan – NEED NOT TO KNOW (mirror).
Detective Conan – Identity Almost Revealed to Ran (mirror)

If you’re using the PutFile link, you might need to change View Size to WIDE for the dimensions to be correct.

Xbox 360

So I finally ordered my Xbox 360. I don’t usually post hot deals on my blog, but this one is just too hot, especially since Microsoft’s announced they won’t be lowering Xbox 360 prices this holiday season.

There’s been 2 threads going on:
B$: xbox 360 for 360 at overstock.com ($340 with coupon)
SD: Xbox 360 Platinum System with HDD $360 at Overstock.com (page 6 and 7 are the most useful)

Both threads are talking about the same thing, but the thread’s title on SD is a bit outdated.

Overstock has the Xbox 360 Platinum for $398.99.
However upon adding to your cart, it drops to $380.44 (including $1.40 shipping)

There’s no sales tax (unless you live in Utah and Indiana). If you do unfortunately live in one of those States, well… you should move.

Next, you’ll need to go through the 10% off coupon link which will get it down to $342.59 shipped. However, some people who go through that same link are getting $340.59 shipped, so I’m not exactly sure what’s going on. Looking at their posts, it seems the 10% is apply to the $398.99 price instead of the discounted $379.04.

Anyway, after you’ve added the system to your cart, click here to go to the 10% off coupon link (expires 11/31/06).

The price won’t update in your shopping cart, so begin to check out. You could either log into an existing account or create a new one. I’ve had better luck by creating a new account.

Your Order Review should appear like so:
Subtotal: $379.04
Discount: – $0.00
Coupons: – $37.90
Shipping Charge:* $1.40
Tax: $0.00
Grand Total: $342.54

Enjoy!

Do hurry, since Overstock tends to go out of stock on their Xbox 360 supply quite often, given that it’s $60 cheaper than everywhere else. If you’re confused about the terminology, the Platinum system is also known as the Premium system, or the system that comes in the White box (vs the Green box which holds the Core system). It normally retails for $400 + tax + shipping (if applicable) and what differs between the Core and the Premium is that it comes with a 20GB hard drive (Core has no hard drive) and has a wireless controller (Core comes with a wired controller) and a headset. You can see a better chart of the differences at Xbox 360 FAQ – What is the difference between the Xbox 360 Core System and the Premium edition?

At first, I was planning to get mine from Costco. They’re selling their Xbox 360 Bundle for $489.99. There are stacks of these in my local Costo (last weekend that I went). Some people have reported that the price has been lowered to $469.99 at their local Costco, but I don’t think that’s the case here in Washington. I’ve calculated the Costco bundle at $490 and the regular bundle at $400 and with my employee discount, I don’t need $90 to get the extra stuff that the Costco bundle comes with (Extra Wireless Controller, Play & Charge Kit, Project Gotham Racing 3). Although the main reason I wanted to buy from Costco was the return policy. If anything happens to it, like the overheating issue, I can just go and return it and get a new one.

I don’t have a big screen TV yet, but I still can’t wait to plug this into my Dell 24″ LCD. I mean my Dell 2405FPW 24″ LCD supports upto 1080i through the component inputs in the back. Check out these images from [H]ard|Forum – Will XBOX 360 look good on 2405FPW?

Don’t the images look pretty darn sweet on the Dell 2405FPW 24″ LCD?

By the way, I just realized what the i and p stand for (i.e. 1080i vs 1080p).
i = interlaced
p = progressive

From What is the difference between interlaced and progressive video?

There are basically two ways to display video: interlaced scan or progressive scan. Progressive scan, used in computer monitors and digital televisions, displays all the horizontal lines of a picture at one time as a single frame . Interlaced scan, used in standard television formats (NTSC, PAL, and SECAM), displays only half of the horizontal lines at a time (the first field , containing the odd-numbered lines, is displayed, followed by the second field, containing the even-numbered lines). Interlacing relies on phosphor persistence of the TV tube to blend the fields together over a fraction of a second into a seemingly single picture. The advantage of interlaced video is that a high refresh rate (50 or 60 Hz) can be achieved with only half the bandwidth. The disadvantage is that the horizontal resolution is essentially cut in half, and the video is often filtered to avoid flicker (interfield twitter) and other artifacts.

Lucky Number Slevin

Watched this movie today. It was a interesting, but the twist at the ending was easily seen half way through the movie, though the rabbit hole went much deeper than I had originally imagined.

In the beginning of the movie, when Good Cat was telling the story, he was Charlie Chaplin coming in 3rd in a Charlie Chaplin look-a-like contest was a story. I’ve heard this many times and decided to verify if it’s true. According to Snopes, it apparently is true: Legend has it that Chaplin himself once entered — and lost — one of these competitions. It is usually said the contest was held in Monte Carlo or Switzerland, and that he came in second or third.

Sorry!

Sorry for the minimal amount of posting for the past few days. I’ve been busy at work, looking at houses, and reading Death Note. Haha. It’s 5:30am and I have work a meeting at 11am tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll make it. I had a meeting today (supposedly) at 11:30. However, by the time I woke up, I had hit my snooze button from 10:20 to 11:40. Welp, I got lucky and the meeting was canceled. Haha.

Anyway, Death Note had an awesome ending, though I thought it could’ve been more awesome if it had a better twist at the end. Not going to say much right now, but I’ll post more tomorrow.

As for now, you can see what I’ve accumlated in Random Crap a few days ago.

Random Crap:

Today’s Japanese phrase is: 完敗 (kanpai) – complete defeat. This is what someone screams when his opponent dominates the match. Do note, it sounds exactly the same as 乾杯 (kanpai) – toast (drink) when people are cheering and drinking and banging their mugs together.

Quote from Chokoboii:

There are so many TV shows catering to pre-rich students (medical, law and business) such as Grey’s Anatomy, House MD, Nip Tuck, ER, Law & Order, Judge Judy, The Apprentice, etc. And while these shows only exist because of their large niche of audience, there lacks a drama show catering to engineers.

I propose an engineering TV drama show. Companies who have engineering problems all flock to an engineer. Every episode will be about how the engineer accomplishes certain tasks, such as how to build a subway underneath a city without disturbing it. The catch is that the engineer is a swinger. By day, the engineer figures out how to put a floating city in the sky, but by night he can’t figure out which sister (of triplets) he slept with. It will be a fast-pace drama that will be intelligent, as well as sexy. It will even spawn a new genre of television called, intellirama (intelligent + drama).

Woman shoots fireworks at police helicopterAnnoyed with a sheriff’s helicopter flying over her house late Thursday night, Marjorie Thompson ran outside with a bottle rocket launcher and started shooting rockets at the aircraft, authorities said. Authorities said they caught Thompson, 44, in the act of launching the second bottle rocket.
