Ark. Mayor Accused in Sex-For-Water CaseWaldron’s mayor was released on a signature bond Wednesday after being accused of soliciting two women for sex after they fell behind on their water bills. Troy Anderson, 72, is accused of abusing the public trust and patronizing a prostitute. After hearing complaints about delinquent water bills, Anderson solicited sex from the women, authorities said.

California home for sale for $75 millionThe 30,000-square-foot custom-built estate belongs to Frank Pritt, founder of software company Attachmate Corp. The estate features a car museum, entertainment complex, gymnasium and mini water park. Can you add the car museum into the price of the house? I mean if I stick the Mona Lisa into my house, can I include the price of the Mona Lisa as the house’s worth? I’m not saying you can’t add extra things to sell the house along with, but it shouldn’t really be considered part of the house’s worth.

A very strange sign of the times…Exhausted Japanese workers in need of a pick-me-up will soon be able to get a hit of canned oxygen at their local convenience store. … “People are under a lot of stress and can’t get much exercise, so they aren’t getting enough oxygen,” said Minoru Matsumoto, a spokesman for Seven & I Holdings Co Ltd, Seven-Eleven’s parent company. O2… *drools*

K-1 Ernesto Hoost – gaki no tsukai (from lowjack) (also available at thatvideosite.com: Yet another Japanese variety show, this includes something titled “slapping machine”) – a hilarious video where Ernesto Hoost is hosting a Japanese TV show: ガキの使い. The setting appears to be in a library, but it’s pretty obvious it’s stated. They have rounds where one out of the group of 6 people get chosen for an unfortunately event including pulling out nose hair, eating wasabi sushi, smelling foul air, popping a giant balloon under your shirt, etc. For some reason, I think the cards were staged as 2 people got chosen the most. I believe the crew is the same as the video I posted several days ago: You DO NOT laugh when this Japanese man tries to speak English.

Looks like AOL’s another competitor that’s entering the online video market: UnCut Video

History of Console Prices (or: $500 ain’t the worst…) (from /.) – Is the $500 price tag for the crippled PlayStation 3 historically high or low? I did a bit of number crunching to try to put that number in perspective. These graphs tell the story. Pretty interesting graphs. It’s also interesting that Nintendo has never launched a console for over $200.

This must be why they call it a cell blockFamily visits in Sao Paulo prisons only take place once a week but jailed Brazilian gangsters chat on their contraband cell phones every day. Smuggled cell phones are used to keep in contact with families but also to direct criminal operations outside the penitentiary walls — such as the gangster offensive unleashed in Sao Paulo in the past week. You’d think they’d scramble the frequencies there blocking cell phones from entering or leaving.

Friends Repay Joker With Human-Cage PrankA practical joker got a taste of revenge when friends turned part of his apartment into a human-sized hamster cage, complete with shredded newspaper bedding, a six-foot exercise wheel and a giant water bottle. “It was a lot of work, but it was one of those cases where you do it because you have to,” said Keith Jewell, a longtime friend and neighbor who engineered Monday’s hamster-cage prank on Luke Trerice. Trerice, 28, had it coming: In 2004, he enlisted others to help him encase another friend’s apartment and most of his belongings in aluminum foil. … The group worked through the night before Trerice’s arrival, shredding newspaper, blowing up a beach ball, installing the water bottle in a window and filling a metal feed bucket with Cheetos. There wasn’t time to finish a few details, such as lining the walls with wire fencing. Sounds like fun!

Morgellons Disease Baffles Patients And Doctors (from /.) – … Instantly, he says, a bolt of pain shot up his arm. He tugged on another one and the pain snaked up his neck. Then the really creepy part began. “It felt like bugs under the skin of my arms, in my joints,” Lawrence says. “I freaked out.” Across the country, thousands of people complaining of the same horrifying phenomenon have formed an illness subculture. They share lists of symptoms, medical speculation and tales of run-ins with mainstream doctors at www.morgellons.org, the official Web site of a group called the Morgellons Research Foundation. This totally reminded me of the scene from Oldboy.

Elephants Dream (from /.) – A 3D animation project completely done using open source software. The video is also licensed under the creative commons license. From Wikipedia: Elephants Dream is a story with quick-witted dialogue, tightly designed architecture and unusual sound effects. The main characters, Emo (a cool young trumpeter) and Proog (a confused – or maybe not? – loner) are each stuck in a world of their own. At a certain moment they cross paths with one another. The oddball Proog cautiously tries to introduce his young friend Emo to his world. When Emo realizes that Proog primarily wants to push his ideas on him, this leads to a conflict between them. But can Emo survive in Proog’s world? And can they overcome their conflicts, or will they each go their own way in life? Tygo Gernandt and Cas Jansen create two unique personalities that command the imagination, and carry the viewer along into a bizarre world that consists of a bleak wasteland with a tangle of cables and other alien landscapes, a living typewriter, an enormous elevator shaft, and especially a lot of very strange birds. It was a weird experience. I didn’t think much of the 10 minute video at the beginning. The animation and designs were incredible, but the voice acting and the storyline was truly lacking. However, reading the description from Wikipedia, I guess it was a bit deeper than what I had orginally imagined. They have torrents for 480×270 | 720×405 | 1024×576 | 1920×1080. The last one also comes with AC3 5.1 SRS.

Japanese lab creates ‘Da Vinci’ voices (from /.) –
Using methods employed in criminal investigations, the Japan Acoustic Lab says it has analyzed the skeletal structures of the historical figures’ faces to replicate how their voices would have sounded. The voices are part of the intense promotion of the Hollywood film on Microsoft’s Japanese site at http://promotion.msn.co.jp/davinci/voice.htm. … Suzuki, who frequently appears in popular media, has used his skills in a variety of fields, such as analyzing voices in purported recordings of Osama bin Laden.
Many people on /. were arguing how does one compensate for local accents and other factors. I’m not an anatomist, but I’m guessing the facial bone structure and other factors like height and body size can give a pretty good estimate on what pitch and tone someone is likely to have. Thinking about it some more, I believe the pitch/tone someone uses in normal daily conversation is probably the voice that requires the least amount of energy. I mean I talk in a really high pitch, but that would require me exerting extra energy to accomplish. What would be interesting would be to see them do it on real people today. The article claims they have done a sample on Osama bin Laden. It would be interesting to see how well it compares to the recordings.

Friend left as deposit at gas stationA German woman left her friend as a deposit at a gas station because she did not have enough cash to pay for her petrol, police said Wednesday. “She didn’t have enough money to pay the bill, so her friend stayed behind as a human deposit while she went to withdraw cash,” said a spokesman for police in the southern town of Muenchberg. “Unfortunately, the woman did not return.”

Syriana

Been wanting to watch this movie for awhile. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t too impress with it given that I had high expectations of the movie. Don’t get me wrong, the movie was good, but I don’t think it’s really telling a story more than just stringing a sequence of random events together which really didn’t have a beginning nor an end.

VoiceStick

With AOL releasing their AIM Phoneline, there’s been a lot of discussion of different VoIP services. I had given it a shot, but it didn’t have any numbers 626 numbers (Monterey Park, CA) or 425 numbers (Redmond, WA) available for me. I got a PM from another user that said he had gotten a 626 number in Alhambra, so I tried Mark Keppel’s address, but it still said no numbers were available. Probably all the 626 numbers are gone.

I was also introduced to VoiceStick.com today and I’m surprised I didn’t know about it before. This is so cool, even cooler than IPKall which I had introduced several times on this website.

VoiceStick has this Next2Nothing plan which is well, FREE. You get you own local number which others can reach you at and it’s unlimited incoming calls. However, outgoing calls cost 2.4¢/min to anywhere in the USA/Canada, but there’s always SkypeOut for that till the end of this year. Also, the quality of VoiceStick is better than IPKall as I’ve even gotten fax to come in w/o any problems. So now I have a local number for friends and family back in socal that want to reach me, but for now, it’ll only get the fax machine on my computer until I purchase a 2nd phone.

You no longer have to install the bloatware that AOL requires you to install before using the AIM Phoneline.

Another cool thing is that VoiceStick works with any compatible SIP software/hardware, so I was able to configure my Linksys PAP2 to work with it with help from this thread: Configuring Sipura SPA-2000 to use Voicestick

The attributes you have to change are:

SIP Port: 5060 (or 5061)
Proxy: i2telecom.com
Use Outbound Proxy: Yes
Outbound Proxy: 206.165.50.116
User ID: <your login>
Password: <your password>

I haven’t tried to see if there were any 425 #s but since this is nationwide, I would expect them to.

I currently have $0 balance in my VoiceStick account and don’t really plan to make outgoing calls anyway. There’s always my cellphone for that.

Word’s Worth

From 24 Season 5 Episode 22:

Jack – “What makes you think I’m not going to kill you the second this is over?
Chris – “Because you’re going to give me your word. And I know what your word is worth to you. So it’s all I need.

This reminds me of the moment of the exploding flash memory he gave to the German intelligence and that’s just how much Jack’s word is worth. Just thought it was funny… Jack’s words are worth sh*t when dealing with terrorists.

Also, every time technical jargon comes out of Chloe’s mouth, my ears bleed:
Not a Pheonix. It’s a poison pill firewall. Any attempt at circumventing it and the hard drive does a cold start erase, at which point you can forget about retrieving any data.

WTF is a poison pill firewall? Search on that string results in only 24 references. I’m guessing it’s like a suicide pill where if they detect they’re getting invaded, they’ll drop the bomb. And the WTF is a cold start erase? Cold start implies the device hasn’t been on for some time and by starting it, it’s starting it cold. If a hdd is running, to cold start it requires a cool off period. I can’t believe I’m trying to analzye Chloe’s statements. sigh…

Underworld Evolution

Watched this movie last night, but I got too tired to post it. Didn’t really give the movie much of chance as I was multi-tasking as it was being played on the background. The movie if you see it as a pure action movie wasn’t that bad and there was Kate Beckinsale, but overall the storyline was pretty lame and stuff just happened without much logic.

Also I just realized if my iTunes/Quicktime doesn’t allow simultaneous audio streams or maybe there’s a bug with their Mozilla plug-in because distinctly remember multiple trailers being played simultaneously. Anyway, I have my iTunes playing when I’m typing up this entry, and suddenly I hear screeches and audio not music related. I switched to the Apple Trailer tab and the trailer is playing, but no audio. I pause my iTunes and the audio from the trailer immediately comes on. Just thought it was interesting because it reminds of the old days where you can’t have multiple audio streams being played at the same time or your sound card goes crazy.

UnWired Buyer

So I first heard of this on AnandTech, but finally got around to do this today. It takes less than ~30 minutes to do everything and everyone’s confirming that they’re getting the money.

Initially the reward was only $10, but they’ve bumped it to $20 recently.

So what is UnWired Buyer. It’s actually a pretty neat service, and they’ll probably charge to use it pretty soon. If you’ve ever done auctions, you’ll know what sniping is. Ever bid on an auction and at the very last second, someone comes in and outbids you and takes the win? Well, that’s called sniping. I used WinningBid Pro! for my snipings before, but they’ve stopped supporting the software and eBay changed its bidding mechanism. What UB (UnWired Buyer) is is a sniping service. You add auctions to your eBay watchlist, UB downloads that list and you can set a max bid on it and it’ll bid at the last possible second.

There’s also the call option which is neat. You provide your cell phone number and when the auction is ending within 3 minutes, you get a phone call which prompts you to enter a PIN you’ve set up earlier and then you get real time status as the end of the auction nears. You can hit # to bid the minimum bid, or hit in numbers to set a max bid.

There’s also the SMS text messaging option. I haven’t tried that, but seems like you’ll get a text message reminders regarding auctions on your watchlist.

There is one ceveat. You need to provide your eBay username and password. If you don’t trust this service, don’t bother doing this deal. If you’re worried, you always have the option of changing your eBay password after this (which is what I’m probably going to do).

So how do you get your $20? It’s pretty simple. Sign up for this service (see Referral Bonus below before you do) and you’ll be prompted to enter a PIN, a email address, and your eBay username and password. PIN is just a 4 digit number you can easily remember. You must enter a valid PayPal email address (this is where they’ll send the $20 bonus). What I did was created a new krunk4ever.com address and linked that to my personal PayPal account and probably will remove I receive my $20 bonus.

In order to qualify for the $20 signup bonus, you must follow these rules:

  1. To qualify for the $20 signup bonus, the user must register for UnWired Buyer and use the service to bid on an auction using their phone within 30 days. The $20 signup bonus is for new users only.
  2. New users MUST USE UNWIRED BUYER TO BID ON AN AUCTION WITHIN 30 DAYS from date of signup. This promotional offer cannot be transferred or forwarded.
  3. TO QUALIFY, USERS MUST HAVE AN EBAY FEEDBACK SCORE OF 10 OR MORE (or the user must have been a registered eBay user for over 12 months).
  4. The $20 Signup Bonus is limited to one (1) per valid eBay account.
  5. The $20 Signup Bonus is valid only to legal residents of the US and Canada.
  6. UnWired Buyer employees and their families are not eligible.
  7. UnWired Buyer reserves the right to request additional information regarding the claim and the right to confirm conformance to eBay user regulations. Any misrepresentation or fraudulent information disqualifies the bonus.
  8. UnWired Buyer, Inc. reserves the right to change or modify this offer at any time.

In other words, you’ll have a 30 day time frame to complete this offer. To complete this offer, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Add an item to your eBay watchlist.
  2. Update your UB watchlist and make sure your item shows up. (Don’t bother setting a max price)
  3. Make sure the Call Me checkbox is checked
  4. When UB calls you, enter your PIN and make a bid (hit # to enter maximum bid)

If you have nothing you want to bid on at the current moment, here’s what I ended up doing. Do a search for ebook. Cap the maximum price to $1 and search only auctions ending within the hour. You can find one that’s interesting enough or find one that’s ending the earliest, but there are TONS of ebooks that only cost $0.01 with FREE shipping. If you do win the auction, your final total is only 1 penny and you’ll earn $20 (+ $2.50 referral fee if you let me refer you).

Add that ebook auction to your watchlist and wait for the call. I chose one that ended in 15 minutes to give myself time to prepare. Make sure the item shows up in UB’s watchlist and when the auction is about to end, you’ll get a phone call. You’ll be prompted to enter you pin. They’ll ask what you’d like to do. I believe hitting ‘1’ is to bid and # is to make the minimum bid. They’ll constantly update you on the current bid amount and if you’re the highest bidder. You can really hang up at this point since you’ll get the $20 bonus no matter what. The rule was to bid and not to win. If someone else wins, it’s better for you, because now you don’t even have to pay that penny.

I’ll update you when I get my bonus. I’ve already got my email confirmation that I’ll be receiving my $20 bonus in 1-2 days (about 5 minutes after I made the bid). People claim they’ve gotten their $20 bonus within hours, but we’ll see.

* REFERRAL BONUS *
So if you let me refer you, I get a referral bonus of $5. However, I’m willing to split it 50/50 with anyone who wants me to refer them. I’ll just PayPal the $2.50 when I get the money. They don’t have a generic link for me to post, so I’ll have to send you a email directly through their system. If you want a referral email, just email me or IM me or leave a comment on this page with a short message and make sure the email you use (which is hidden) is the email you want me to send the referral. This email address also has to be the email address you register with and also has to be linked to your PayPal account. I just added a new email to my PayPal account for this and will probably remove it when I get my bonus (don’t see why PayPal needs to know about my UB email address anymore or vice versa).

* UPDATE *
I made my bid ~10pm last night. I got my $20 bonus at 7am this morning. Pretty good turn around time. Took less than 9 hours to get my bonus money.
