Bleach Episode 61

Bleach Episode 61

Not much fighting in this one…

bleachbleachbleachbleachbleachbleachbleachbleachbleach

Spoilers:

Although there wasn’t much fighting in this one, there was a lot of explanations. Why is Captain Aizen evil? Why does he need Rukia? What was Uruhara’s connection to this whole thing? Why was he banned from Soul Society?

What happen basically was Captain #4 (the nurse) found out where Captain Aizen and Gin teleported to and through telepathy, told everyone about it, even the ryokas (Ichigo and group). Just before Aizen kills Renji, Ichigo arrives and blocks and they team up and try to fight Aizen. Do note, both of them are still badly injured at this point and both get knocked down easily. However, Ichigo’s soul slayer is still in BanKai mode. Aizen says since they’re about to die anyway, he’d tell them the story. There’s 4 basic attacks: sword, arms, feet, and spiritual. Once you reach the max, you’ve reached the highest level of a Shinigami. However, can one advance even further? There is a way and that is to merge powers with a Hollow. Aizen has been experimenting for many years without much results (recall the Shino incident where Rukia kills her lieutenant because he transformed into a Hollow). However, Captain Uruhara found a way to do it and created the item that would easily merge the two powers. Uruhara was the scientist/researcher of the 13 captains, so him finding it wasn’t ridiculous. However, he saw that the item as too dangerous, but was unable to destroy what he created. So he hid it instead, inside a normal being. And that was Rukia. That was why Rukia’s spiritual attacks were so powerful initially when she was small. It took Aizen many many years to figure where Uruhara hid this item. And now he can finally advance his powers.

The mouse captain shows up and the episode ends there. We have yet to see his BanKai yet, so this may be exciting.

Here’s what I think (may spoil for the rest of you, if you didn’t see the same thing): Rukia doesn’t actually have the item anymore. That’s why her powers are always so weak now. In fact, that item has been transferred into Ichigo. I’m not sure if he became a Shinigami after the item transferred or if he could’ve before, but that’s another point to think about. He already has 2 beings in him: both the Hollow and the Shinigami. I bet he’s going to bust out a half Shinigami and half Hollow to kick Aizen’s butt.

King Kong

IdA (Identity and Access) had a morale event on Wednesday. We all got to go see King Kong! You can watch the trailer here. IMDB users rate it an 8.3. The movie was really nice and exciting at the same time, but wow, it was 3 hours long! That also equated 3 hours of not-working, since we went to watch the movie during business hours. It was pretty sweet. I got in that day around 11. Helped out a new teammate on how to use the Infocards UI. Then I went to lunch at 12pm with other Cal Bears. Got back around 2pm and left for the movie at 2:30pm. The movie started at 3, but that was just the previews. I’d say the movie actually started around 3:20 and ended around 6:30pm. Most of the people went straight home after the movie, but I decided to put in a few extra hours since I’ve really only worked for 1.5hrs that day. I put in another hour or so and called it a day.

Well, back to the movie. The movie was so beautiful and the animation and computer graphics were awesome! When compared to the Hulk, this was way better. I only used Hulk as a comparison since it also featured a large oversized gorilla, although that gorilla was green. The story was true to the 1933 depiction of th movie and the novel. There were actually 2 movies before Peter Jackson’s 2005 revision: 1933 and 1976, however the 1976 storyline changed a lot.

Spoilers

One of the 1st question people asked after seeing the movie was: “Did the original have dinosaurs?” That’s what I said when I first saw the trailer. Yes, there were indeed dinosaurs in the original 1933 movie. If you click on the 1933 link, you can clearly see King Kong battling a pterosaur. I’ve also uploaded a clip from the original: Spider Pit Sequence which clearly shows the triceratops on the other end of the log bridge.

Just a warning for those who are afraid of bugs and insects, you’re going to hate the Spider Pit Sequence in Peter Jackson’s redition. I actually saw people cover their face. And for those who have seen it, weren’t the worms awesome!?!?!

The battle scene with King Kong vs the 3 T-Rexs were also really great. However, I felt many of the scenes were dragged out a bit too long. The animation was great. The storyline was great. The movie overall was just a bit too long. It felt like the 1st Lort of the Rings in someway, but that had a reason for being long, it was trying to build up character development.

You probably know the rest of the King Kong story, so you don’t need me to explain it to you. I’ve also taken a liking to Naomi Watts. She’s really pretty.

Lunch with other Cal Bears

Thanks to Deep and Reshma for setting this up. A bunch of us UC Berkeley folks got together on Wednesday and had lunch at Claim Jumpers. It was actually pretty cool and fun to see some familiar faces. We all talked about… work. Haha. It was weird telling each other our experiences and where we see ourselves in the future. The people that found time to come included Deep, Arjun, Jeffrey, Lexin, Krishnan, and Reshma. There were 7 people altogether: 6 guys and 1 girl. There were also 6 software engineers and 1 marketing. Guess who was marketing. You’re right if you said the girl.

Speaking of food, last night I decided to cook lasagna. No, not home made. I actually bought the frozen Kirkland Signature lasagna at Costco. Got home around 7:45. The instructions said to put it in the oven for 115-125 minutes. For some reason, I thought I was going to be able to eat around 9pm. Maybe cause I was thinking 115mins was 1hr and 15mins or maybe I was thinking it was 7 and +2hours equals 9pm. Either way, I didn’t get to eat until it was 10pm. I’m not sure if that was a deciding factor in how delicious the lasagna was, but it was darn good! Most Kirkland Signature stuff I’d have to save are above average and should not be considered a generic brand. Ungsunghero and I had a long discussion on what what types of products we’d use a generic brand and what generic stuff are just as good as brand name stuff. The only 2 items I can come up with that I see generics equally as good as brand name was medicine and gasoline. Kirkland Signature was brought up because there’s many many Kirkland Signature products I used, but I wouldnt for generic brands. Anyway, back to the lasagna. I was only able to eat about 25% of it, maybe less. I have so much left overs. hahaha. Oh well, the microwave’s going to like me for the next few days.

Here I’m actually going to tangent into 2 different categories. I’d talk about microwaves first. Microwaves are so cool. You know what? They condense what takes an oven 12 minutes to cook into 4 minutes of high microwave power. That’s a savings of 2/3 of the time. I was also looking at my chicken wings and that condensed 25 minutes to 5 minutes which saved 4/5 of the time! One time I was told when I was small, was NEVER to stand in front of a microwave when it’s on due to the radiation. Is there any truth in that? Do microwave radiation really leak out of the microwave? If they do, it wouldn’t necessarily be coming out from the window only right?

The 2nd category I wanted to talk about was Costco. Several interesting things I found today when browsing Wikipedia. It all started several weeks ago when I couldn’t remember the name of that big department store we used to go to in Pasadena. It was a fun place to go to. The only gripe my dad had against it was it was so far. While ungsunghero and I were talking about Target (that’s another whole ballpark which I don’t feel like getting into), I suddently remembered the name Fedco. I wasn’t too sure if I was right. Googling it didn’t help much either. So I wikied it and bingo! It actually went bankrupt back in 1994: Fedco (Southern California). Membership-based department store—including grocery, and in some locations, furniture—that served middle class. Went bankrupt. Circa 1950-1994. and was under the list “Defunct U.S. chains not acquired by extant chains or liquidated”. But right above that was something interesting which led me to investigate Costco so more:

  • Fedmart (Southern California) First mass-market discount retail/grocery chain Sol Price founded. Was headquartered in San Diego in the 92111 ZIP Code. Price voluntarily closed the chain. Price later founded Price Club based upon what he learned from his Fedmart days. Price Club has since been merged into Costco. Circa 1965-75.
  • In 1997, PriceCostco changed its name back to Costco, under which the company currently operates. Costco has also changed the site of its corporate headquarters from the city of Kirkland, Washington, to Issaquah, Washington. – The first Costco (in Kirkland) is actually the Costco I go to. Unless there’s 2 Costcos in Kirkland…
  • Costco caps its profit margin on most products at 14% and allows itself slightly higher margins only on its Kirkland Signature store brand (a name derived from its previous headquarters in Kirkland) with a strict 15% profit limit. – I actually knew the name Kirkland Signature was derived because the Costco was their first HQ, but I didn’t realize the profit margins were capped. But even capped higher that the other products, Kirland Signature items are STILL SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER.

I was checking out this movie: The Game of Their Lives. IMDB users gave it a 7.6. It’s a documentary about how the North Koreans got into the World Cup (soccer). I haven’t watched it yet, but during the skim through of it, I found a really nice scene. Enjoy!

Forlorn Lover Leaves Ring in Unlocked CarAn anonymous gift-giver, apparently depressed over a lost love, left a $15,000 diamond engagement ring in somebody’s else’s unlocked car in a commuter parking lot. The ring came in a box topped with a white bow and accompanied by a note, which read: “Merry Christmas. Thank you for leaving your car door unlocked. Instead of stealing your car I gave you a present. Hopefully this will land in the hands of someone you love, for my love is gone now. Merry Christmas to you.

Superman ‘too big’ (from rayalome) – The new Superman is giving movie bosses a headache – because of the size of his bulge. They fear Brandon Routh’s profile in the superhero’s skintight costume could be distracting, reports the Sun. Hollywood executives have ordered the makers of Superman Returns to cover it up with digital effects. Haha. Did you also know they had to digitally resize Lindsey Lohan’s breasts in Herbie: Fully Loaded because mothers during screening were complaining they were too big? Maybe next time when they audition for the next Superman, one of the questions they’ll need to ask is, “How well endowed are you?” I don’t think they can ask how long his *cough* directly, can they? Would that be sexual harassment? Here’s some shots of Superman in his skintight costume:

Spoilers:

In this episode, you see a totally different side of Train. He’s naive, he’s fun, and he’s no longer serious. He also sold his coat to get get this weird weights he put on his shirt. In this episode, you learn that Train has become part of the sweeping clan and is always hungry. I wonder what happened with the other girl that was supposedly killed by Creed…

Anyways, Eve says she’d help out, but both Train and Sven make fun of her, so she challenges Train to see who can catch this wanted person first.

Then we meet Rinslet again where she’s back to stealing. However, she’s caught by #7 (the Chronos # that tried to kill Eve after Train gave up) and they make a deal. Apparently there’s been rumors that Tao users are still around and have been giving a drink to some people which make them super powerful, but then self destructs. He wants her to steal that drink and is willing to pay dearly for it. Rinslet agrees and apparently the next target is the same target Sven’s group is going after. So obviously they meet up again. However, Eve goes off and finds the person himself. Train chases because he doesn’t want to lose the challenge.

At this time, you meet 2 new characters (seen in the Opening). I’m not sure if they’re good guys or bad guys at this point, but I hope they’re good guys. They have come to give this 4th person the drink. There were special instructions on what to do in order not to self destruct. This person was an environmentalist gone crazy who believed people who stepped on grass or plucked flowers should be killed. He’s hesitant to drink the potion since he’s heard about the other people dying after using it. However, when Eve steps on the grass, he goes berserk and drinks it. Immediately, he gains control of the plants and vines and starts attacking Eve. Train comes in and starts shooting, but he gets blinded by the flowers pollen. Sven and Rinslet enters but arent much help. Suddenly the maniac self destructs because he didn’t follow the instructions in using the potion.

Welp, Rinslet joins the team again. We’ll have to wait to see what comes next.

Spoilers:

In this episode, not much happens on the Saya front besides her contacting David regarding seeing the Phantom and that the missing girls from this school all look quite similar to Saya.

This episode focuses more on Kai and Rick. They were having Pho in Hanoi and came accross a baseball game. There Rick met Mui, a girl who lost her leg because she stepped onto a mine that was left behind during the Vietnam War. He doesn’t know what’s happening to him, but he blushes whenever she holds his hands. You later also find out that Mui has been taking medicine given to her by some sponsor. I’m not exactly sure why she’s taking the medicine, since the sponsor was interested in her piano skills. You later find out that the sponsors were actually vampire researchers and for some reason, vampires could hear or frequencies that normal humans can’t hear. However, Rick was able to hear the weird frequencies too. Not too sure what’s going on there.

Later in the story, you learn that Mui’s father had injured himself and she needed money and a metal detector to help the family out. Rick gives her the money. However, he was then scolded by the orphanage keeper because the only reason why she would want a metal detector was the fact farming wasn’t enough to keep a family alive. They also looked for mines and sell them as scrap metals. Kai and Rick goes off to Mui’s village and finds her, but both think Rick made the correct choice by giving her the metal detector. To them, being together with family was the most important. That’s why they need to find Saya.

However, at the end of this episode, Rick and Mui get abducted and Kai gets knocked out. You also see a brief sequence of the jouranlist as he heads for Vietnam. In his father’s memorial box, you see that he had taken a picture of a vampire and the journalist hints to the fact his father had died in Vietnam.

Spoilers:

The center court where the judges of Soul Society make all the decisions and rulings have been infiltrated. Captain #13 (the chibi captain) breaks in and the alarm doesn’t go off. Instead, he finds a room full of dead bodies. Suddenly he sees Gin’s lieutenant and chases after him along with his own lieutenant. Gin’s lieutenant then hints about Hinamori and Captain #13 rushes back to find Hinamori while his lieutenant (the female with the big boobs) continues chasing after Gin’s lieutenant. We then learn about each of their own Soul Slayer. Gin’s lieutenant’s Soul Slayer apparently makes the enemies weapon 2x heavier each it hits it and after a few blocks, makes it unbelievable heavy for the enemy to continue using it. However, we have yet to see what Captain #13’s sword can do, but it seems to have a similar property to Byakuya’s sword where it can dissolve.

Returning back to the other scene. Hinamori arrives at the center court and guess what! Captain Aizen is NOT DEAD! That totally took me by surprise. Gin was also there. Hinamori of course was overjoyed to see her captain, but things started to make sense. The letter and the blaming of Captain #13 (chibi captain) started to fit together. While Hinamori was hugging Captain Aizen, he stabs her and kills her. At this time, Captain #13 arrives and finds Hinamori dead. Aizen says something very cruel, though very deep: “There’s no one so easy to control as someone who admires you. … Admiration is the emotion farthest from comprehension.” Aizen also goes about explaining how he faked his own death. At this point, Hitsugaya (chibi captain) busts out his BanKai which seems to be an ice dragon and charges toward Aizen. Aizen easily evades and in return slashes Hitsugaya up. At this time, Captain #4 (the nurse) arrives because she had seen through his deception. It turns out the dead body was actually Aizen’s sword and it was part of his Soul Slayer’s ability. But only those with eyes would be able to fall under the enchatment. At this moment, Captain #4 realizes that there’s another person on Aizen’s team, the blind captain (forgot his number).

The scene moves to Rukia and Renji for the 1st time in many episodes and there was the blind captain waiting for them and teleports them back to the execution stage. Gin and Aizen also teleport there too. Next episode is going to be interesting.

High Fructose Corn Syrup vs Cane Sugar

Got this comment from /.

Definitely. American companies put way too much HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) in their products, and it’s nasty stuff. About two years ago I decided to avoid HFCS, but still eat sweets like I normally would. Ie, I still ate ice cream, cookies, sodas, cereal, etc, but only those brands that use cane sugar instead of HFCS. You can get good products at places like Whole Foods (pricy) or Trader Joes (similar price or even cheaper than a supermarket). [In fact, Trader Joes cereals, which don’t have HFCS, are cheaper than the corresponding kinds from Kelloggs and General Mills which do have HFCS.] Anyway, the interesting result is that, without meaning to, I lost about 15 pounds while still eating all the desserts I wanted, just by avoiding HFCS!.

One thing is that HFCS seems to do is inhibit the ‘full’ feeling you get after eating, so you can eat more if your food has HFCS. Great news for food companies, not good news for American health.

It is annoying because food with real sugar just tastes much better, and is healthier. In most other countries products like Coca-Cola has cane sugar, but here in the USA all products substitute HFCS. I once emailed Coca-Cola about this a few years ago, they said it’s up to local bottlers to decide which sweetener to use. And of course they cut corners and go for the cheap stuff.

Some companies use this to their advantage because ignorant people see CORN instead of SUGAR and think the product is healthier. Ie, Kelloggs Corn Pops used to be called Sugar Pops. By making the change, parents thought Corn sounded much healthier than sugar, so they have no problem giving this cereal to their kids, when it has the same amount of calories, yet uses HFCS instead of cane or beet sugar.

Unfortunately midwestern corn farmers have alot of political power, and politicians, aiming for approval in the early Iowa primaries, are likely to bow down to these farmers in order to get the party nomination. The corn lobby has huge power, both political and economical, and they choose to market HFCS instead of doing something productive such as growing biofuels with the corn instead.

Another thing is that it’s more expensive to import and use cane sugar than to process corn into HFCS. I am not certain of this, but I would theorize that one big factor is due to the embargo we put on Cuba after Castro came to power in 1959. Cuba was a huge source of cane sugar (their chief export), so the embargo basically crippled their economy overnight and impeded a huge source of sugar cane into the USA. So corn farmers, along with massive chemical processing to produce the HFCS, filled the void.

Anyway, that is my rant, I hate HFCS, and it’s good to see more people becoming aware of it. I really do think that just by substituting cane sugar for HFCS there will be a notable change in America’s obesity problem. It probably won’t cure the problem, but I think there would be definite effects.

There were many interesting things from this comments and several highly doubtful things. I’ve bolded the things which I found interesting. However, I was interested in the High Fructose Corn Syrup and was wondering it there has been any studies regarding this. Sugar coated – We’re drowning in high fructose corn syrup. Do the risks go beyond our waistline? (from ungsunghero):

Other studies by researchers at UC Davis and the University of Michigan have shown that consuming fructose, which is more readily converted to fat by the liver, increases the levels of fat in the bloodstream in the form of triglycerides.

And unlike other types of carbohydrate made up of glucose, fructose does not stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin. Peter Havel, a nutrition researcher at UC Davis who studies the metabolic effects of fructose, has also shown that fructose fails to increase the production of leptin, a hormone produced by the body’s fat cells.

Both insulin and leptin act as signals to the brain to turn down the appetite and control body weight. And in another metabolic twist, Havel’s research shows that fructose does not appear to suppress the production of ghrelin, a hormone that increases hunger and appetite.

“Because fructose in isolation doesn’t activate the hormones that regulate body weight as do other types of carbohydrate composed of glucose, consuming a diet high in fructose could lead to taking in more calories and, over time, to weight gain,” he says.

Wathced Lord of War today. You can watch the trailer here. At first, I didn’t really know what to expect of this movie. I saw the trailer and knew the premise of it was about an illegal arms dealer. But I do have to give it to them for making a pretty neat poster.

Spoilers:

Nicholas Cage stars as Yuri in this movie as a Ukraine refugee who fled to America during the 1st World War or was it the 2nd. It doesn’t really matter. His family even converted from Catholics to Jewish to avoid being caught (from who, it wasn’t really ever clear). They own a little restaurnt and Nicholas Cage was always trying to think of easier ways to make money. Turns out weapons had the best margins. Not regular sellings to local gangs. Those were chump change and too much competition already. The margins were too low. The money was to be made from selling it to countries at war.

At first, his brother was in on it, but he got sick of seeing people get killed with the guns he sold. He decided to do cocaine to hide from his conscience, MAJOR SPOILERS [ but Yuri never figured it out until his brother gets shot to death trying to destroy the weapons some time later in the movie. ]

Actually, one thing I never got was why Yuri continued to do what he did? Was it because that gave him purpose? Did he not have compassion for the people that were getting killed? Right before his eyes? He had so much money at one point in time, I couldn’t believe he wouldn’t quit. Let’s backtrack a bit. He was in love with this girl since the age of 10. How he managed to get his dream girl to marry him and even have a kid is somewhat beyond me. I guess with money, it makes things a lot easer. Eva (his wife) isn’t really that demanding of an expensive life-style either. Eva never did question once what Yuri did. She told him she didn’t want to know. I guess ignorance is bliss. However, as an immigrant, Eva’s parents were also killed by civil war by weapons sold by arms dealer like Yuri.

All this time, there has been a detective after Yuri. Some interpol team led bye someone named Valentine. Also, sometime in the middle of this movie, the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union countries had so much arms in their arsenal, Yuri gave them a proposal they couldn’t reject.

Back to the quitting. Valentine had approach Yuri’s wife because after many years of tagging Yuri, he wasn’t able to get much dirt on him. Eva declined to help them and confronted Yuri about this. Yuri said he’d give up the arms deals and try living normally, but life was just not as exciting anymore. He was good with arms dealing and was invincible. The only thing that can hurt him or make him weak was his wife. After 4 months of quitting, Yuri once again returns to the arms business, which ultimately led to his brother’s death.

When he came back, he was under arrest because his wife had apparently gave him up after he went back in. However, the coolest part of the movie came in the next few minutes.

MAJOR SPOILERS:
Let me tell you what’s going to happen.
This way you can prepare yourself.
Soon there’s going to be a knock on that door and you’ll be called outside.
In the hall, there will be a man that outranks you.
First, he’ll complement you on the fine job you’ve done in making the world a safer place,
that you’re to receive a commendation and promotion,
and then he’s going to tell you I’m to be released.
You’re going to protest. You’ll probably threatened to resign.
But in the end, I will be released.
The reason I will be released is the same reason you think I’ll be convicted.
I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile sadistic men calling themselves leaders today.
But some of those men are the enemies of your enemies.
And while the biggest arms dealer is your boss, the President of the United States,
who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year.
Sometimes it’s embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns.
Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can’t be seen supplying.
So, you call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I’m a necessary evil.

One thing that wasn’t ever made clear was… did he get AIDs? He did have sex with some random African woman and 1 in 4 of them has AIDs. However, it did mention he was invincible shortly after since some guy with an AK-47 tried to shoot him, twice, but both times the gun got jammed.

Went to watch The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe today with stanman, Richard, and Saran. You can watch the trailer here. The movie was fun, sort of like another Harry Potter for the Christmas season. I only read the 1st 2 of C.S. Lewis’ books and the 1st was actually read by my teacher. I wonder if the remainder of The Chronicles of Narnia will be made into movies. I don’t remember the story much anymore, but the movie did help me bring back some memories. IMDB users give it a 7.7.

The movie was really beautiful, but the acting could’ve had some more work. Plus I hated Edmund, the little brother. I guess he was suppose to be the character to hate, but I didn’t hate him for betraying his siblings. I hated him because he was so stupid! The props and costumes were supposedly done by the same people who worked on Lord of the Rings, but this one’s more children friendly. The movie follows pretty closely to the story, or at least I think so.

I do have to say that Susan’s participation in the battle was so minimal, her character actually seemed unnecessary in the story, besides the fact they needed 2 sons of Adam and 2 daughters of Eve. The battle was a bit short as stanman stated, though it was a fun an interesting battle. Nothing to get excited over though. I also felt that Peter being able to fight so well was a bit strange and weird. Basically a lot of the movie didn’t make much sense, besides the fact it looked pretty and fun.

One of the biggest mysteries I had was about the handkerchief. Lucy first gave it to Mr. Thomas. Thomas then gave it to Beaver before he was caught. Beaver gave it back to Lucy. But in the end, Thomas gave it back to Lucy. How the heck did that happen? Goof in the storyline?

After the movie, we went to some pizzeria that served deep dish Chicago-style pizza. The pizza was good, but Zachery’s is a lot better.
