Roadtrip from Texas to California

I visited my younger brother in Texas and then the whole family took a road trip from Texas back to LA. Just wanted to talk about this before I forget all the tiny details.

If you may have noticed, I recently updated my Facebook profile picture. I decided it was time since I’ve gotten fatter since then + now I have longer hair. I also switched to contacts, but wearing sunglasses doesn’t really show that. One thing you might not have noticed is that what I’m snowboarding on isn’t snow, but sand. These are the sand dunes at White Sands, New Mexico.

Anyway, let’s start from the beginning. My brother is currently working at Schlumberger (pronounced schlum-ber-jay). If you’ve heard of it, you’ll know how big it is. If not, you can easily do a search. Anyway, we hung out in Laredo, TX for a few days and you might’ve read about my experience with getting drunk.

Our next stop was San Antonio where we checked out the River Walk (very beautiful during the Christmas season). We also went up the Tower of the Americas and checked out the city. Apparently San Antonio is like the 7th largest city in the USA. We also visited the Alamo and got a refresh in Texan history. On the day we left, we checked out the Japanese Tea Garden which was very beautiful.

I took this really neat picture of a stork and turtle ignoring each other, as if they were giving each other the silent treatment.

Next, we went to Austin and my brother showed us the state capital building. It’s funny how I’ve never been to either New York’s, California’s, nor Washington’s capital, but I’ve now been to Texas’ capital. Apparently there’s also a bridge where tons of bats would come flying out from underneath when dusk hits, but we we weren’t in the right season for that, as the bats have migrated.

Next, we went to Carlsbad, New Mexico to check out the Carlsbad Caverns. The cave was really big and very pretty. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. My brother made me take this picture because it reminded him of *cough*:

Our next stop was White Sands where they had these really cool sand dunes right next to a missile testing site. They had sleds you can rent for $10 which we found ridiculously expensive, given that the entrance fee per person was only $3. Good thinking on my brother’s part as he busted out his snowboard:

I also drew a Krunk on top of one of the dunes (not really that great of a picture since I couldn’t get a good angle):

We were originally planning to check out Phoenix, Arizona, but decided we didn’t really know much about the city and no one had anything particular they wanted to see, so we only stopped in for dinner and continued our drive home.

Getting Drunk for the First Time

So I’m still not sure if I was drunk or just tipsy, but as those who follow me on Twitter have found out, I drank a ton of alcohol for the 1st time in my life. As my brother puts it, “My plan was to get get you F*ed up last night.”

I’m currently in Laredo, TX visiting my brother. Last night, he took my sister and I out drinking at a local lounge. I still recall most of the specifics of what happened last night, so that’s why I don’t think I was exactly drunk, but definitely beyond tipsy. My brother just ordered drink after drink for my sister and I. The drinks weren’t too bad (you can read my tweet to find out what I drank exactly) and I had a fun time.

All this time, my brother’s also been trying to get me to dance with some random girls. Being in an unfamiliar place, it’s not really something I find myself comfortable doing. In fact, I’m probably not comfortable doing it even at a familiar place. However, let’s just say after a few drinks, there was some dancing, some grinding, and somehow I ended up on stage. In all the midst of this, I lost my headband, but I think someone took it off my head when I was dancing. I also ended up somehow exchanging numbers with some random girl, but I don’t really want to get into that story.

The lounge was finally closing and we got our bill. I was a bit shocked at the total, but somehow managed to calculate 15% tip. I wobbled when I walked afterwards, but was still able to recite the alphabets in reverse. We ended up hitting a taco joint which had some awesome tacos, but too bad I wasn’t exactly hungry. I ended only eating about 3 bites from my taco. Is it me, or does time move a lot faster when you’re drunk?

Anyway, we got home, I drank a glass of water, tweeted that I was drunk and hit the sack. I was surprised I was still able to type. I had a hard time trying to fall asleep. Not sure if I ever did. Then some time around 10 or 11am, I hear someone rush into the bathroom barfing. I wasn’t feeling that well myself and had problem getting myself up.

So never having experienced an hangover, I’m going to consider what I had this morning to be a hangover. I didn’t have any headaches, but I was definitely nauseous and my body wasn’t feeling well. Certain smells also made me want to vomit. After an hour or 2 of feeling really nauseous, I decided to get it over with and induced myself to vomit. I felt much better afterwards, but still not too great. I still didn’t feel like eating and just wanted to sleep.

We went to Hayashi Hibachi for lunch later on and after eating the some awesome grilled salmon, I think I was finally starting to feel okay. Ended up taking more naps afterwards. I think I’m back to normal now. Definitely something I’m not looking forward in experiencing again anytime soon.

Decrease of Negative Percentage

It’s been awhile since I had an official blog post and I’ve been meaning to blog about my new Zune HD and my new contacts and maybe even purchases I made on Black Friday, but life’s been busy.

Also I hurt my shoulder from lifting weights, which puts a dud in doing any arm related exercises (meaning no push ups, no pull ups, etc.) Though after several physical therapy sessions, I have to say my shoulder’s doing much better. Well, it doesn’t hurt anymore when I turn my head.

I’ll end this blog post with a letter I received from Allied Waste Services (my garbage collection service):

Dear Residential Customer,

Effective January 1, 2010, the rates for recycling, yard debris, and garbage collection services will decrease approximately -1.85% to -2.07% depending on your level of garbage service. A typical residential customer will pay $17.28 per month for 32 gallon toter service in 2010, a decrease of -1.98% over the current rate of $17.63. This decrease covers normal inflationary operating costs experienced in the provision of service. Inflation in the Seattle Metropolitan area was -0.7% between June 2008 and June 2009.

[…]

I believe I’m on the 20 gallon toter service where I’m paying ~$14.xx / month. Anyway, I think their letter template was never tested with a decrease in pricing as you’ll notice they say decrease of a negative percentage throughout the letter. In fact, what they really mean is a decrease of a positive percentage OR an increase of a negative percentage. Decrease of a negative percentage like a double negative, just negates the change.
