Diploma

I finally got my college diploma! I’ve always thought I’d be back in Berkeley to pick it up myself, but every time I’ve been back, the timing wasn’t right. The office was either closed, or I didn’t have time, so on and so on. I’ve dreaded to have them mail it to me, because I can’t see how they can justify charging $12 for it.

Anyway, apparently they only hold your diploma for 5 years and given that it’s almost 3 years since I graduated (my brother inviting me to his graduation reminded me), I decided that $12 it is.

I went to the Office of the Registrar website, and apparently they don’t take credit cards. !@$#$*&&!%&!$*!@#*!&%! Apparently I am forced to write them a check, and you know how I hate checks. I decided if that’s what it’ll take to get my diploma, so be it. I wrote them a $12 check and mailed it off with my application. By god, I can’t believe I still remember my student ID number without giving a sweat.

So what did $12 net me which would’ve cost me $0.00 if I picked it up in person? Apparently the following:

  • 1 cardboard envelope with a “DIPLOMA – DO NOT BEND” note on it
  • 2 paper-sized cardboard pieces to keep the diploma from bending
  • 1 UPS label to ship 1lb to anywhere in the USA
  • Someone putting this altogether and dumping it in the outgoing mail bin

Yeah, I feel gypped too. You’d expect it to at least come with a frame or something. Haha. ;p Oh well. At least now I have proof that I graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. degree. If my mom was here, she’d probably frame it. Knowing me, it’ll end up in my pile of junk. Plus don’t forget, I know have Arnold Swarchenegger’s signature!

P.S. This may be my last post in awhile. Been watching a lot of Genshiken and now I’ve started watching House.

Guitar Stand (Rock Band Dork)

So there was a sale on guitar stands last week and I contemplated on getting one for my Rock Band/Guitar Hero III guitars. People on the thread were saying the guitar stands work fine for Rock Band guitars. I told Ungsunghero about my plan and he said he would start calling me “Rock Band Nerd Dork“.

The double guitar stand they were selling ($14 shipped) was out of stock, so I contemplated about getting 2 of the single guitar stands (also $14 shipped). However I thought too long and those sold out before I could purchase them. The only thing left was the triple guitar stand ($20 shipped), so I decided since I do technically have 3 guitars, that’ll work out. I originally had 1 Guitar Hero III wireless guitar and 1 Rock Band wired guitar, but Ungsunghero had gifted me an additional wireless guitar since I had told him I was thinking of getting another wireless one.

I got the stands on Saturday morning and putting them together was rather simple. It was a bit flimsy, but seems to do fine. For $20, I can’t really complain.

I haven’t figured where exactly I want to put it, but I’m planning or changing the layout of my living room anyway.

UPDATE: Ungsunghero corrected me and said it should’ve been Rock Band Dork and not Rock Band Nerd.

Deep Fried Pot Stickers

So after enjoying my 1st deep frying experience, I’ve been itching to use it again. However, my fridge is lacking in things I could deep fry. Ungsunghero has recommended that I DO NOT deep fry eggs. I’ll heed his advice for now, but I’m interested in see what the outcome is.

Anyway, he’s suggested a bunch of things such as cream cheese wontons, breaded chicken breast chunks, breaded vegetables, spring rolls, etc. I said those seemed like a lot of work. He said then I should just do the whole chicken breast. Haha. The topic of deep fried Twinkies and deep fried Snickers also came up. I actually had a deep fried Twinkie in Las Vegas. It was pretty good, though for those that know me, I have a sweet tooth that can’t be satisfied. You’ve probably heard me say there’s no such thing as “too sweet”. I also asked Ungsunghero about deep fried tofu (mmmmm 揚げ出し豆腐 Agedashi Tofu), but he said those were messy.

Anyway, I recalled I had deep fried gyozas at Sushiland and they were pretty good, so I asked him about deep fried pot stickers and he said those are amazing. I had a big bag of Ling Ling’s Pot Stickers, but unfortunately they didn’t have instructions for deep frying, just pan frying. Ungsunghero says as long as the outside turns golden brown, it should mean its ready.

I didn’t want to over fry the outside and not have the inner get hot enough, so I tried frying at 325°F for 5-6 minutes, which the outside had started to turn a golden brown. Tried one and it wasn’t as good as I expected. Ling Ling’s Pot Stickers skin is a bit too thick to be deep fried, but it was still pretty good. Next time I’ll pick up some pot stickers or dumplings with a thinner skin.

Hmmmm, I think I may have eaten too much fried food lately as my throat is starting to feel dry and irritated.

Changing Amazon Affiliates ID

So now that I have multiple places where I link to Amazon.com items using my affiliates ID, I’ve decided to create multiple Amazon affiliates ID to track where things were coming from.

I knew there was a way to mass edit strings in my blog posts and a quick search resulted in: How to Find & Replace Data in MySQL

To find a string in a certain field and replace it with another string:

update [table_name] set [field_name] = replace( [field_name], '[string_to_find]', '[string_to_replace]' );

So a quick update wp_posts set `post_content` = replace( `post_content`, 'krudoethekrue-20', 'krunk4everblog-20' ); did the trick.

Now I’ll be able to track if people are coming through my HD-Trailers site, my HD-Trailers blog, or my Krunk4ever! blog.

Deep Fried Fries

Awhile back, I picked up a Euro Pro deep fryer from Linen ‘N Things for either $10 or $20 after rebate. I never got a chance to use it till today. When I first wanted to use it, I noticed it said not to use olive oil, which was the only type of oil I had around. They said corn oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil , canola oil, etc were all fine. So later, I picked up a giant jug of canola oil from Costco, since that appeared to be the healthiest of the bunch. Speaking of which, did you know that canola stood for: “Canadian oil, low acid”? I had always thought canola was a plant! Also, wouldn’t the world oil be redundant here, sort of like ATM machine (automated teller machine machine).

Anyway, I had the giant jug of oil and it just sat around as I was too lazy now to test out the deep fryer.

I was talking to Xyon today about how even if we had a bread maker, we’d be too lazy to use it. I then said that’s probably why I haven’t used my deep fryer ever since I got it a couple months back. He commented and said aren’t deep fryers meant for lazy folks. That got me thinking… how do I clean it up? Is it messy? It turns out that I can leave the oil in there for years and reuse it. If it starts turning brown or black, I should change the oil, but given that I won’t probably be using it that much, it might even last a lifetime.

Anyway, I got hungry tonight and decided to give it a try:

I have to say, these deep fried fries are 100x better than anything that can come out of the oven, microwave, or even pan fried! Mmmmmmm. Now I just need to find more things to deep fry!

Speaking of which, I guess now would be a good time to put in a word about a new photo service my friend Derek and Tekman have started: photosleeve. If you look at my sidebar, you’ll notice I have a new link: PhotoSleeve which has all my digital photos from 2002 to 2008. There are problems with my 2001 digital photos which I’m fixing before I upload them. It’s still being beta tested, but you can sign up on their homepage or if you send me a message, I can probably speed up your application. 😉 Maybe I’ll delve more into their features when I get a chance to write a dedicated post for it.

Blocked by Akismet?

So for the past few weeks, I noticed my comments on friends’ blogs were caught by Akismet. At first I thought maybe it was due to some links that I had included in the post, but when it got to 6 out of 6 comments blocked, I started to think it was something else.

I asked Hjo3 if I could try out posting random comments on his blog to figure out what the problem was and he gave me the OK.

After submitting about 6 or 7 comments interchanging what my name, email, and website were, I found out that whenever I use my *****@krunk4ever.com email or claim my website to be http://www.krunk4ever.com/, Akismet would block that comment. Others would go through fine.

So I went to Akismet’s Contact Form and submitted this email:

I noticed Akismet has been blocking my comments on the blogs I frequent and after testing it out on my friends blog, it appears you don’t like it when I have *****@krunk4ever.com as my email or when I use http://www.krunk4ever.com as my website.

I was wondering why Akismet is blocking my domain…

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Krunk

Today, I got a reply:

Hi,

Sorry for the trouble – your comments should now be good.

Mark

Woot! Haven’t had a chance to test it yet, but friends beware, my spamming capability is back! And this time, Akismet won’t be able to protect you. MUWAHAHAHAHA!

This Week? Next Week?

So we had a big debate over the concept of “this” vs “next” [insert day of week] at work a few weeks back. I took this debate and have gotten a few more people’s input on it, and now would like to know yours.

Before I infuse any sort of idea into your head, you might want to copy and paste the following blob and decide on your own what it means to you:

I’m posting this on Wednesday (4/16), but if you’re reading this not on a Wednesday, lets just assume this is a Wednesday for now. Which date would it correspond to if someone said the following:

  • Today: __________
  • This Tuesday: __________
  • This Wednesday: __________
  • This Thursday: __________
  • This Saturday: __________
  • This Sunday: __________
  • Next Tuesday: __________
  • Next Wednesday: __________
  • Next Thursday: __________
  • Next Saturday: __________
  • Next Sunday: __________

One additional question to ask yourself: Which day of the week does your week start?

Now that you have your answers, lets go over what I’ve found.

First off, lets start with which day of the week does a week start on. For me, it’s always been Monday, so I’ve always disagreed with how the calendar is laid out, which typically starts the week off on Sunday. For me, Sunday is part of the weekend, which as the word signifies, the end of the week.

However, Ungsunghero told me he always thought of “weekend” similarly to “bookend”, as in they are the 2 ends of the week. That actually made a lot of sense and I confirmed with him that the adjacent Saturday and Sunday are part of 2 different weeks. I then asked what “this weekend” meant to him and he agreed that would refer to the coming Saturday and Sunday and maybe even Friday.

Before we go into This/Next [insert day of week], let me give 2 more examples (still assuming today is Wednesday). Does any one of the following sound weird to you?

  • We are going bowling this Tuesday.
  • We went bowling this Tuesday.

If you believe this Tuesday refers to the coming Tuesday (4/22), the 2nd sentence would sound weird/incorrect to you. If you believe this Tuesday refers to yesterday (4/15), the first sentence will sound weird/incorrect to you.

I’m part of the latter group that believe this Tuesday refers to yesterday.

Now we can get into the big blob above. Given today is Wednesday 4/16, as I mentioned above, “This Tuesday” typically refers to either yesterday (4/15) or the coming Tuesday (4/22). For me, “this” refers to “this week’s”, so “this Tuesday” refers to “this week’s Tuesday” and I’ve already defined my week to begin on Monday and end on Sunday.

However for some, this [insert day of week] can never refer to the past, so they’re more incline to think it refers to the coming Tuesday (I’m going to avoid using next since it just adds to the confusion. I assuming coming Tuesday is non-ambiguous).

Since we’re on Tuesday, let’s jump to “Next Tuesday”. For most, I would assume it means the coming Tuesday (4/22), however I believe a few would say it would actually refer to the Tuesday after that (4/29).

“This Wednesday” is another difficult one given that today is Wednesday, however I would say it would be referring to today (4/16), though I don’t think many would ever use that in context. I assume some would say it refers to the coming Wednesday (4/23). As for “Next Wednesday”, it refers to the coming Wednesday (4/23) for me and I assume some would think it refers to the Wednesday after that (4/30).

I’m pretty sure most people would agree “This Thursday” and “Next Thursday” refer to 4/17 and 4/24 respectively. However, I can also see people thinking both this/next Thursday referring to tomorrow (4/17).

Similar to Thursday, I believe this/next Saturday works the same way.

As for “This Sunday”, some think it refers to this past Sunday (since their week starts on Sunday), but for me it refers the coming Sunday, since my week ends on Sunday. Similarly, “Next Sunday” would be just 1 additional week after “This Sunday”, but I guess for some, it’s possible that both this Sunday and next Sunday refer to this coming Sunday (4/20).

There, does your head hurt now? Then I’ve accomplished my goal. ;p

Kashmiri v. Regents Student Fee Lawsuit

So MsticAzn sends me this link a few weeks ago: Kashmiri lawsuit refund information

Kashmiri lawsuit refund information

Date: 2008-01-30
Contact: University of California Office of the President
Phone: (510) 987-9200
Email:

On Jan. 23, 2008, the California Supreme Court denied the University of California’s petition for review of the judgment in favor of plaintiffs in the Kashmiri v. Regents student fee lawsuit. The San Francisco Superior Court will now approve a formula for determining the amount of each class member’s refund and a process for distributing refunds. Refund distributions will be handled by an outside claims administrator, not the university. Class members are encouraged to send their current email and postal addresses to the class action administrator for this case at: lnelson@rustconsulting.com. Any other questions should be directed to the attorneys representing the plaintiff class at: info@browngold.com.

Not having much clue what exactly the lawsuit was, I awaited MsticAzn to get more information.

However yesterday, SkyLancer brings up this same topic and apparently it had to do with UC Regents raising fees after students were enrolled back in 2003. Talking it over with Ungsunghero, he found the lawsuit documentation and apparently only applies to the following group:

  1. Current and former University of California (“UC”) students who enrolled in a UC professional degree program prior to December 16, 2000, and whose professional degree fees were raised after that date.
  2. Students who attended any UC school on a semester system during the Spring 2003 semester, whose fees for that semester increased after they had already enrolled in classes and received bills for the semester.
  3. Students who attended Summer 2003 session at UC Berkeley or UCLA, whose fees for that summer session increased after they had already enrolled and received bills for the session.

So I sent an email to Rust Consulting to find out how to determine if I was eligible for the refund and promptly received a reply back this morning:

Dear Mr. Hon,

Our records indicate that you are included in the Kashmiri v. The Regents of the University of California class. A notification was emailed to all class members to update them on the status of the settlement and to request that contact information be provided to update our records for future mailings. This notification was emailed to you at ********@berkeley.edu as that was the most current information that was available to us. I have included the notification in this email for your information in case you did not receive the previous email.

There is nothing further you need to do other than to keep us notified of any changes to your contact information. The case has been decided in favor of the students; however the trial court must still approve an allocation of recovery. Therefore, we are not certain when you will receive a refund, although it is likely to occur by the end of 2008. The students have created a website, www.educationisaright.org, that should post updates as they become available.

Sincerely,

Linda Nelson

My ********@berkeley.edu email account was pretty much deactivated the day I graduated. I wonder if there’s some place I can go and update that email.

Anyway, here was the original email that was sent out to people:

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT STEPS TO TAKE TO ENSURE YOU RECEIVE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR POTENTIAL SHARE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA FEE OVERCHARGE JUDGMENT

You have been identified by the University of California as a member of the plaintiff class in the class action lawsuit known as Kashmiri v. The Regents of the University of California, which challenged certain fee increases at the University. The $33.8 million judgment in favor of the plaintiffs has been affirmed on appeal and is now final.

You will receive additional information about the distribution of the funds recovered from the University. As we begin this process, we need current e-mail and postal addresses for all class members so that we can send you additional notices and, eventually, a check if you are entitled to one. If you have changed your name, please provide both names. Please provide any updated contact information as soon as you can and if possible by April 21, 2008, by (1) replying to this e-mail (if you are the addressee), (2) sending an e-mail to ucfees@rustconsulting.com, or (3) mailing the information to Kashmiri v. Regents Class Action, P.O. Box 1931, Faribault MN 55021-7186. The information you provide will not be used for any other purpose.

Also, please forward this email to any of your classmates who may be members of the plaintiff class and encourage them to update their contact information. The plaintiffs consist of three subclasses:

1. Current and former University of California (“UC”) students who enrolled in a UC professional degree program prior to December 16, 2002, and whose professional degree fees were raised after that date.

2. Students who attended any UC school on a semester system during the Spring 2003 semester, whose fees for that semester increased after they had already enrolled in classes and received bills for the semester.

3. Students who attended the Summer 2003 session at UC Berkeley or UCLA, whose fees for that summer session increased after they had already enrolled and received bills for the session.

Thank you.

Rust Consulting
Class Action Administrator

If you believe you qualify for the refund but did not receive an email from them, you should email Rust Consulting to verify if they have your updated information. I’m not sure how the refund is going to be split or how much each person will get, but I assume we’ll find out shortly.

Are Elongated Pennies Legal?

I’m serious that those pennies you crush up or press at theme parks and tourist attraction locations with the location’s emblem are called elongated coins.

Elongated coins are coins that have been flattened, stretched and imprinted with a new design with the purpose of creating a commemorative or souvenir token. The collecting of elongated coins is a branch of numismatics. Elongated coins can also be categorized as exonumia.

I’ve always wondered if it was some trickery or if it was really legal to destroy U.S. issued currency for something silly like these elongated pennies.

But while I was at Snoqualmie Falls, I noticed this sign on the Penny Presser:

penny pressers legality

IS IT LEGAL?

Yes, it is legal to elongate coins under 331, title 18 of the United States Code. It is illegal only if someone fraudulently mutilates the coin, so elongating coins in this manner is legal.

I’m not exactly sure how fraudulently is defined, but does that mean when I defaced all those pennies back in Jr High by rubbing it against the asphalt, that it’s technically legal since I wasn’t defrauding anyone? Ooooh! Shiny! I hope I didn’t just self incriminate myself.

While I was at the Space Needle, I noticed they also have Quarter Pressers. However, they cost 50 cents more. $0.51 = 1 elongated penny. $1.25 = 1 elongated quarter. What a rip off. However, my sister collects them as souvenirs, so oh well.

I guess pennies do have a use after all! And Congress was thinking of scrapping away the penny. Think of all the penny elongators that will have to be scrapped! ;p

Now, if I light my cigarette with a $100 bill, I wonder if that’s still legal:
lighting cigatter with dollar bill
