Final Fantasy XII – Opening Movie

Final Fantasy XII – Opening Movie (from Esca). Graphics are really pretty. Several of the aliens remind me of the ones from Star Wars. Not too sure what the story is going to be, but the video was fun and pretty to watch.

The link provided above is actually a recompressed version so it’d fit on PutFile. Do note the actual file size is 120MB. You can download the torrent here.

I’m currently in the process of recompressing it down to 100MB so I can upload to RapidShare. Link will come shortly.

*update* Here’s the direct download link as promised. Do note the video was recompressed to 95MB so I didn’t have to split the video into 2 seperate archives. That way you can download it without waiting 70 or 80 minutes before you can start downloading the 2nd part using the free account. I used Super v2006 and recompressed it using the H.264/AVC video codec at 1776kbps and mp3 codec at 48khz 128kbps. Quality difference is actually minimal, though still discernable.

I had actually tried to use VirtualDub before that, but was hitting into problems where the ffdshow codecs were giving me a: Cannot start compression: An unknown error occurred (may be corrupted data). (error code -100). DivX 6.1 worked, but I was having this weird echoing effect. Tried many ways to fix it including finally splitting the audio and video and saving it in raw formats and then muxing them together again. Finally gave up and decided to use Super v2006 as stated above.

So apparently the game’s already out for the PS2 in Japan. Torrents are already available if you follow my “drift”.

I’ve decided to re-encode it into wmv and upload it to my gallery: Final Fantasy XII – Opening Movie. Enjoy!

The Great Escape (from /.) – You’re trapped in a high tech Spanish slammer, crawling through real tunnels, behind real bars. First-person gameplay breaks out of the box. … This medieval-looking electric chair sits deep inside an old bank in Madrid. The building has been remodeled to house La Fuga, a real-life role-playing game. Think of La Fuga (The Escape) as a $20 million cross between Halo and laser tag. The goal is simple: Decipher visual riddles to navigate and escape Mazzina, a high tech prison. This actually sounds really fun and only costs 15€ for 3 lives.

My Weekend

My weekend was rather relaxed. Caught up on a lot of sleep. Didn’t post much as you may have noticed. It was a relaxing weekend. Did I just repeat myself. Haha. It’s not everyday where I can wake up at 3pm anymore. Sigh.. Wish I could though. Haha. Though I have noticed some weird symptoms lately that resemble my lifestyle back in college. First thing is I noticed for the first time in many many months, that I actually fell asleep on the table in front of my computer.

Last night, I went over to CDMCC’s place to check out his new Xbox 360. It’s so pretty, especially on his 51″ HDTV. We played PGR3 for a bit, but it turns out that game doesn’t support over 2 players on the same console/tv and Elizabeth wanted in. So we switched over to Perfect Dark Zero, which allowed up to 4 player split screen. The wireless controllers didn’t have the lag I was expecting. They sure have gone a long way. Play Perfect Dark Zero was really fun. We only played Team Kill Count and it was us 3 against 3 boths set to the easiest level, and even then we were having problems. Though we finally got to the point where we go to win every round. Then we started playing with what weapons we get on the round and we got slaughtered when we chose rocket launchers only and assault riffles. Haha.

After dinner, we came back and played several rounds of the Guillotine Card Game. It was an interesting game which I’ve never heard of or played. It even came with a little guillotine stand up thingy which was nothing more than a decoration. The game has 2 piles of cards, nobles and action. The point of the game is to get the most points. You get points for killing off nobles and each noble has an associated point value to it. You can also get negative points if you collect heros and martyrs and other creepy looking guys. Either way, there’s a specific order the nobles get executed and the next player has to pick up the next noble. Before he/she executes the noble, she can play some action cards which lets you do one or more things such as rearranging the order, forcing other players to give up their action cards, adding more nobles to the guillotine line, giving you extra points for having specific colored nobles, etc. The game ends when the 3rd day is over. Was rather fun since I won a few rounds.

I just notice today my Shure E4c-n Sound Isolating Earphones in Black were delivered on Friday. Of course I didn’t pay that extravagant price on Amazon.com, but it was quite expensive. But I’ve always wanted a good set of earphones since I listen to my iPod Nano several hours a day. The UPS guy must’ve been lazy because he didn’t drop off one of those yellow slips telling me they left my package in the office. Good thing they still had them since there was a notice stating that they were going to send packages back that aren’t picked up in 3 days.

Xbox 360 Hacked

Xbox360 DVD Firmware Hacked – Video (from /.) – Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official 🙂 It’s been done. … And no, the team decided not to release a hacked FW. The security details are proof itself. The team advocates hacking, not piracy. You can read the replies in the thread. Direct download of the original video is available on RapidShare. What they show in the video is an opened Xbox360, a burnt copy of Project Gotham Racing 3, and how they booted up the copy and the game started. Nothing too fasicinating. No explosions, but just a proof of concept as they stated.

I’m still waiting for Costco to carry stock for the 360 before I purchase one.

Credit Cards

If you don’t already have the Citi Dividend or Chase Cash Plus Rewards credit card, GO APPLY! Both have a full 5% cash back on purchases at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations, plus 1% on all other purchases. You don’t need to care about the 1% since most cards already offer that. The catch is both are limited to $300 cash back per year, so get both and now that restriction goes up to $600 per year. Currently Chase is holding a promotion: $100 bonus cash back check when you sign up (from FW)!!! I only had a $50 bonus when I signed up. The offer code is 94B and expires 4/30/2006.

For those who eat out a lot or travel a lot, might also went to invest in a Costco American Express card. That gives you 3% at restaurants (including bars) and 2% on all travel. I think they count movie theaters as “restaurants”, but don’t quote me on that because I recall seeing it listed under that category once on my bill. There’s a catch though. The cash back on the Amex is in the form of a gift certificate you can use at Costco and comes once a year (every February).

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

A bit late + the fact I forgot to wear green today. I remembered it a few days ago, but it just slipped my mine.

There was green beer at work though, but I think it was budweiser with green dye.

German hotel charges guests by the kiloIn the town of Norden, close to the Dutch border, guests now have to step onto the scales before moving into their rooms and fork out half a euro (35 pence) per kilogram (2.2 lbs). I wonder if a whole family is staying, then is it the combined weight of the entire family.

Got these 2 interesting quotes (from /.):

#14946814
Once upon a time, Frog was taking a look at Toad’s garden. Toad had separate plots out marked “carrots” “tomatoes” and “peppers”. He also had one plot marked “weeds”, which was unkempt and full of weeds. “Toad,” asked Frog, “why the hell do you have a separate plot for weeds?!” “Well, Frog, it’s so that they stay in that plot and don’t go in any of the others.”

believe it or not. There’s a concept called a “deadweight loss” in economics. And basically, it’s any kind of harm (something someone dislikes for whatever reason) which has no corresponding *benefit* for anyone. If I take a dollar from you, that’s not a deadweight loss, because your loss was my gain. But if I burn your dollar, you lost, and no one gained. (That’s a simplification, but you get the general idea.) And obviously, deadweight losses are bad.

Now imagine a town that has a problem with thieves breaking windows so they can get into stores and houses to steal TV’s. Here is ranking of the TV owners’ preferences:

1) No TV’s be stolen or windows broken.
2) Windows broken, but no TV’s stolen.
3) TV’s stolen, but no windows broken.
4) TV’s stolen, and window’s broken.

Here is the typical thief’s order of preference:

1) Get TV’s, but not have to break windows.
2) Get TV’s and have to break windows.
3) Not get TV’s and not have to break windows.
4) Break windows for no reason.

Currently, option number 4) on the TV owners’ list, and option 2) on the theives’ list are prevailing — TV owners lose TV’s and windows. Thieves get TV’s but have to break windows.

Now here’s the kicker:

For some economists, an “efficient” move would be to give the thieves free TV’s! Why? Well, the thieves are better off — they get TV’s, but no longer have to break windows. The owners are better off because, while they still lose some TV’s, at least their windows aren’t broken! Everyone wins! Yay!

Except, as anyone with a functioning brain knows, all that would accomplish is that the thieves would get TV’s, and then some of them (or newcomers to the thievery profession) would still steal more TV’s. The problem, like with the “separate plot for weeds” that you bring up, is that you can’t corral thieves by giving them free stuff. Give weeds a place, they’ll demand more. Give thieves TV’s, and thieves will take more.

It amazes me how the average person sees this, but some economists don’t.

Elderly lovers stopped on dangerous Italy joy rideThe zig-zagging car gave them away. When Italian police pulled over the vehicle, they found a completely naked 70-year-old woman who had been trying to have sex with the driver — 11 years her junior.

Socialist glory a stitch away in new Chinese gameDoing good deeds, volunteering on building sites and obtaining Chairman Mao’s autograph are some of the objectives of “Learn from Lei Feng,” a new online game starring the Chinese Communist Party’s legendary hero. … “For beginners, sewing and mending socks is the only way to increase experience and upgrade,” said Jiao Jian, a young pupil and online game fan from the southern city of Guangzhou. … Enemies in the game are “secret agents,” Xinhua said. Players can replenish their strength after battling such evil forces by talking with the Party secretary, en route to a final meeting with Mao himself. Yet another brain washing tool?

German court rules it’s all work at office partiesThe court ruled the company’s accident insurance would have to pay disability to the man because he was technically still at work, the court said in a statement on Thursday. “Up until the end of a work-related gathering accident insurance coverage continues until it is officially over. If this time is not fixed, participants can assume it continues as long as the senior employee is present,” the court said.

Which do you prefer? TV or sex?The survey by pollsters Ipsos Reid, commissioned by Pfizer Inc., the maker of Viagra, found that Canadians between the ages of 40 and 64 spend an average of 15 minutes a day on sex and romance, but can spend as much as five hours a day watching TV or surfing the Internet. – How long do you think most men and women last at that age…

New virus holds your documents hostageIf we needed any more convincing that malware has gone commercial, a new virus making the rounds provides additional evidence. The Trojan horse encrypts a user’s documents and then directs the victim to pay US$300 into an e-gold account in return for the password that will unlock the files. It’s not clear yet how the virus is spreading, but once installed on the user’s PC, the program encrypts word processing documents, databases, and spreadsheets before deleting itself from the machine.

A few more quotes (from /.):

First some background, this was a /. article on Hot pepper kills prostate cancer cells in study.

You can also masturbate for prostate health! Just make sure you do that before handling hot peppers. Trust me on that one.

Dammit. Now my peppers taste funny.

Spore

Spore (from /.)

This looks like an extremely fun game if it ever comes out. The game is actually being designed by the creator of the Sim series (i.e. Sim City, The Sims, etc). Words can’t really describe how cool this game can be. Do watch the video: Will Wright discusses his new game creation called “Spore”. If you’re too lazy to register, you can always use bugmenot. You can also watch this video on Google Video, but I don’t think the quality’s as good and it actually cuts off the beginning.

You can also check out some of the screenshots.

To put it in a few words, this is a game of evolution, but that barely even starts to tell you waht this game is about. You start off as a microbe living ina droplet of water. You go around eating stuff and avoiding “enemies” that can eat you in a 2D world. After a generation, you lay an egg. I know you’re suppose to just split off, but the egg is a way of letting you know you can evolve now. You can add weapons, tails, limbs, mouth and alter its shape. And you repeat this process until you become big enough to leave the 2D world. In the 3D world, you start off living in the ocean and you slowly evolve into a land creature. There’s even a point where you have to start mating with your same species to produce an egg. The story goes on and a civilization is built and you actually have war against other creatures. That part of the game is somewhat like a RTS (real time strategy).

Later on, you can build a UFO and can abduct creatures and so on. You can even move onto other planets and teraform them if it’s not livable. Later on, you can move onto other galaxies and make contact with other civilizations.

The game just looks amazingly fun.

There’s a site called The Spore Zone that is dedicated to bringing the newest information about Spore to you.

FolderShare

FolderShare (from AT) – Keep important files at your fingertips – anywhere. All file changes are automatically synchronized between linked computers, so you are always accessing the latest documents, photos, and files.

I haven’t used this yet, but it sound interesting.

How It Works
FolderShareTM is a service that allows you to securely keep files synchronized between your devices, share files with friends or colleagues, and remotely download your files from any web browser. FolderShare consists of two components – My FolderShare and the FolderShare Satellite.

My FolderShare: Configure and manage your account from here.

Go to www.foldershare.com from any web browser and login to access your “My FolderShare” page.

From here you can do any of the following:

  • Setup devices to sync or share with
  • Invite others (via email address) to share your files
  • Manage your account – upgrade your subscription, change your email address or password
  • Get help
  • Download the latest software

FolderShare Satellite: The software you need to install on the device(s) you want to sync or share files with.

  • The FolderShare Satellite will run in the background when you are online.
  • As you update shared or synced files, it will automatically update them on the other devices connected.

I did a search on file size limit and came back with this:

Does FolderShare have a file size limit?
FolderShare can not transfer files larger than 2GB. There is a maximum of 10,000 files per library, and you may create up to 10 libraries.

Interesting…

Too bad I don’t trust to have my documents stored online on a sever other than mine.

Funky Cat Maybe

Funky Cat Maybe (ファンキー キャット メイビー) (from Tera). A really cute anime video with characters based off the popular anime: To Heart. Some of them even grow cat ears (猫耳 – nekomimi)! They also have somewhat frightening large eyes, much larger than regular animes (if that wasn’t already large enough for you). I also didn’t get why only 1 girl had her eyes opened, while the rest of the dance crew had their eyes closed. Was it taking too much time to render it with all of them opened? I wonder…

You can download the original version here: To_Heart_2_Dance.avi, but it’s a 80+ meg download. It appears RapidShare has removed this item due to inactivity, therefore I’ve uploaded the original to my Gallery: To_Heart_2_Dance.avi

This video really reminded me of a Japanese Zelda commercial: Legend of Zelda Dance Commercial on the Super Famicon (SNES). I guess it has to do with the sychronized dancing, the beats, and the rap song. The dance moves are awfully similar too!

I’ve extracted the audio: To_Heart_2_Dance.mp3, so if you think the tune is catchy, feel free to download and add it to your mp3 collection. You can also listen to it in your browser.
